*Fun little bait great for ponds. This thing casts really well for its size, I was surprised. Good for when you need to downsize and gets smaller fish to commit*
My absolute favorite way to fish. We can catch on topwater here from early spring until late autumn. I can't get the savage gear duck or rat yet but have them on order. A hot lure for this season was a river 2 sea whopper plopper and it comes in 3 sizes including Muskie sized. It has a big single prop on the back and it's noisy. A good rig for chucking frogs is a 7 ft heavy action fast tip or a medium heavy fast tip with 50or 60 pound braid on a baitcaster. Keep the trace as short as possible so it doesn't pull the nose of the frog down. The frogs catch some giant bass.
Stop trying to make me jealous! lol. We surface fish for about a month with a week of sunny weather somewhere in there! Bloody British weather. lol. Just googled that, spinning propeller tail looks interesting. I bet the larger sizes make some right commotion.
Today I had a 20lb+ pike, 3 perch and a massive trout follow my 20cm topwater wobbler lure all in 4 casts and I only caught one, which was a 5 or 6 inch perch
Sometimes it's just the nature of the takes, that the pike actually miss the lure. With lures like frogs, you have to change how you set the hooks and put in a pause until you feel the line tighten, rather than hitting what you see. On top waters you will often get lots of smaller fish hitting them and they dart up and back down super fast and just bounce off. The bigger pike though should get a good mouthful and hook up easy enough. If you can, only use lures like frogs where you need to but if you can use a lure with treble hooks as there's no weed, then use them.
I tried that frogs and ducks but never catch something with it, only the gitterbug, i had a very old one from the seventies that will did the job, i don't know why that kind of lures doesn't work here, very strange....i bought the mc.celly from Abu Garcia and there are a lot off cratches on it 😋but yeah, you never know why some lures doesn't work...good vid mate 👍
Hi Paul Can you advise on best trace for surface lures. I have found single strand Cahira titanium in 40lb a bit stiff and upsets action of lighter surface lures. Have you found the multi-strand better? I have also found the weight of the trace a hindrance when trying to retrieve it slowly and have considered using SG Regenerator 80lb+. These problems are even worse when targeting summer perch & chub with floating Hornets and 5cm jointed Salmos knowing there is a chance of a double figure pike snaffling it (as I have found out!!). Cheers in advance👍
Sg reganerators a mono blend, fluroocarbon 120-150lb is perfect for pike, once it frays bad just cut snd retye. 80lb is too thin ngl. you can fg knot the trace then tie direct to topwater or a light snap to help keep the action and above the water.
River Piker yeah I just got a 2017 us catalog the bass are killing the ducks rats like i said before I do a lot of tournaments best part about it is there kayak tournaments
+River Piker haha i wish I was part of a pro staff, was shop I got my komodo off and asked could i get 2 line thrus paid him and about 2 hrs later he did not have ms but ss sink rate so for disappointment he let me pick what was left and threw duck in for free :) even tho there ss can always add lead to it as conor said alway better to have slow sink that u can add weight then heavy lure u can make lighter
The new microphone is a huge improvement, even though it's windy you no longer sound as if you're filming at the top of Ben Nevis and I can clearly hear your dulcet tones, how's that Jerkbait special coming on? Cheers
ok wow thanks alot for all that information I got a top water lure today and im going to try it tomorrow at a small canal would I be better off getting a couple of the lures u recomended online or instores and is their any good techniques fishing pike thanks alot for all the reccomended lures
Matey, you will love the top waters. If the pike show up you are in for some great fun. Just start off buying a couple of lures and go from there. As for techniques, you will find it is different every day. Slow retrieve, fast retrieve. Pause the lures, speed it up, slow it down. Short jerks, long jerks. Fast jerks slow jerks. Any and every combination. Deep shallow and so on. That's the whole thing about lure fishing, you need to work out what will lure them in on the day.
I've used some of the smaller ones before. They caught perch ok enough. Problem with them for me, and this is a personal thing not a lure thing, I get bored of slowly twitching stuff on the bottom. It's probably just me. I like to be whizzing lures about. That doesn't always work though so having the slow and steady lure option is good. Let me know how you go with them. I'd expect if anything you have a chance of a good sized perch.
Hey man, great vid as always. Wanted to ask about your point on using a light rod and it causing difficulty setting hooks. Have you missed many fish due to hooks not being set? I ask as I wobble dead baits for the most part and small/medium baits need a very supple tipped rod to allow imparting movement & also detecting very light exploratory bites & losing a fish due to hooks not set is very very rare. Rod weight i use is 10-40g & occasionally a 15-60g, but this one is not as supple so not as nice to use. Just want to make sure I dont have a blind spot in my technique which is why im asking.
I'd say both rods might struggle depending on the size of bait you are using. If you are using sprats or something then both should be fine but larger baits would be a no go in my opinion. Also have a look at your hooks too pal. Make sure they are not too small as that can be a cause. Another thing would be where the hooks are placed, particularly if you are using a larger bait.
wow ok cant wait for tomorrow ill comment and tell u if I catch anything thanks a lot but do pike change their positions alot or do they like staying in reeds for cover?
you will find the small pike will be hanging around the reeds for cover. So they an ambush the prey and so they can hide from the big pike that would eat them. If a pike is hungry and feeding it might be swimming about somewhere so could then be in open water. Often they are just chilling out and just waiting in some hidden spot waiting for the next meal to come swimming past so that's where you make your lure look like an easy injured fish. good luck matey
every rod is different so depends what the blank is like, but you probably could. if the rod is a bit stiff it might feel a bit funny and not cast as far as you might want, but it'll cast it still.
Yeah August time. You might get action even earlier, as soon as water warms up. Personally I don't do it so much through the hot weather but some lads do.
Mark it's a pretty new one. Its an Abu vendetta 10-30g. Still working out what it is best for at the minute. It casts the smaller SG duck nice, no idea if it is right for them yet though. Seems a bit soft when I was using cannibal shads or other 5 inch shads, I've missed a few fish so far. Only cost about £20 though as i spotted it in a sale. Teamed it up with a Daiwa ninja 3000 and for this surface video I had 40lb braid which i'm not sure is right for the reel either. might get some 30lb and see if that seems better. Idea is to have it as a 4 inch shad/medium crank rod for some jack pike fun and also idea is to see if it's a decent enough set up for young kids to go out and buy or buy similar. Just need time to play. I'll be doing more pike soon so that might be when I figure out what it's like.

I've picked up some poppers with the trebles on the top.

i love and have all the 3D Suicide Duck and all the 3D Rat and keep by more savage gear lure have won tons and tons of bass tournaments
Hey Kori. Yeah I hear the bass are loving the top water rats over there. Can't go wrong with the SG stuff they make plenty of fish catching lures
River Piker yeah I just got a 2017 us catalog the bass are killing the ducks rats like i said before I do a lot of tournaments best part about it is there kayak tournaments
Nice one buddy. Don't spend too much money on the lures though....ah forget that, buy them all! lol

+River Piker just got some savage gear - reaction crayfish . not tried them yet but wondering if you have used them and what do you think of them ?

Does anyone know if rod is rated up to 150g lure weight, but there's no minimum one, can I still throw 30g 40g light-ish lures or it's too low?

What time of year are surface lures best?
this time of year. You normally wait until the waters warm up a bit. So last month or so plus now and quick before the cold snap comes in.
+River Piker august time?
River Piker Ok, I'll probably buy some ready for next summer
Yeah August time. You might get action even earlier, as soon as water warms up. Personally I don't do it so much through the hot weather but some lads do.
I do want to try it it seems fun.
have you ever used ducklings or chicks as bait mate ? i once watched a bloke using them presume he got them from pet shop snake good or whatever 😊
ha ha no nver used them bud

+River Piker seems to be a cheap enough set up
and subscribedmate 👍
Ducks decent but the savage snake and rat are beter for action
At 1:37 I've got that lure
Any joy with it Liam? As a kid it's all i used. Had some great times on the surface poppers.
+River Piker had nothing on it
Keep trying them pal, they are worth a go.
