Answering this comment and I know this will meet with resistance, but a leader in a democracy who acts in the nation's best interest (surely their first and most important task), even though it may be illegal, should be scrutinised but not prosecuted. Nixon was different as he was acting in his own self interest

In fairness, they're talking about the legality of it.

I know of Nixon with all his character flaws was a tragic figure but we should not forget his work with the EPA was ground-breaking in fact it made him a lot of enemies on the far right and with the conservatives

Sadly, as do with many political agencies, the EPA is nothing, but another political string for the deep state to push their agenda. I liked Nixon, but he was much more of a international affairs guy, and I wish he was elected in 1960, as by the time he came in, the communists had already effectively made their mark.

I think a lot of RUclips viewers who don't remember Nixon must find this rather confusing. All the talk in the interview about impeachment, and how horrible it is, probably doesn't "grab" people who watched Clinton waltz through the entire process without resigning. It's like trying to explain the Soviet era to people born since the Soviet Union broke up.

He was a complex character with many contradictions in his personality. He comes across as very moral upstanding and square some might say. He was not known for his humour or ability to make small talk. But on the other hand, he could be very charming. He certainly had personal charisma and was a natural when it came to leadership and giving speeches. Yet he could also be very indecisive or doubting his decisions. Also he was well known in his work life (as captured on many oval office recordings and transcripts) for his frequent use of profanity and ill-tempered manner with people. Whilst he was a lawyer by profession and held the law in high regard and had a tough stance on drugs and immoral behaviour, he himself felt he was above the law I think or could out-smart it by finding ways to get around the law, as this interview shows and the Watergate incident. He was extremely intelligent and sharp but also could be quite naive also.

I never understood the need for the movie. Why create a movie about an interview? The interview is what it is and stands by itself. It doesn't need a film with an actor playing Nixon re-creating the interview. It would be more interesting to have a film re-creating the events leading up to Watergate and the aftermath for Nixon. I know some films have been made 'All The Presidents Men' the earliest, but a film from the Nixon prospective and post-Watergate would be interesting.

Before there were Never Trump Republicans, there were Nixon Democrats. McGovern was unpopular with a significant portion of the Democratic base, and Nixon made enough progressive moves for those Democrats to feel comfortable with keeping him.
Noam Chomsky at one point called Nixon "in many respects the last liberal President" and Barack Obama said that there were aspects in which Nixon was more liberal than him. _Overall_ I would definitely argue that Clinton and Obama were both much more liberal/progressive than Nixon (not nearly as liberal/progressive as Fox News says mind you, but much more than the Bernie Sanders crowd will give them credit for), but there were indeed _certain aspects_ where they aren't wrong.
Without the overload of the 24 hour news cycle I would imagine Nixon's corruption was nowhere near as visible or well-known as Trump's criminal cabal, or even Bill Clinton's extramarital affair for that matter. Having been born in the '80s myself, I don't have as much hindsight as someone older than me would. The first thing I learned about Nixon was literally just that he was the only President to resign, and the second thing I learned was what caused him to resign, but knowing what I know now, I understand.

    • @jamesanthony5681

Nixon's opponent, George McGovern, selected Thomas Eagleton as his running mate, who as it turned out, had seen a psychiatrist and received electroshock treatment. Eagleton withdrew, but the damage was done. That was absolutely huge at the time, and it called into question McGovern's decision-making abilities. The break-in of Watergate occurred in June/72, the election was in Nov/72, but the full impact of what happened did not come to light until about a year or so later, with the Watergate hearings.

Nixon declined and said he had no power or authority to halt the nuclear testing and it was the US Department for Atomic Energy. That's a true story and shows he had some morals. He could have just taken the $1 million and said I'll see what I can do.
