    That's a humble attitude man, and refreshing from so many youtubers you see on here calling themselves professional photographers. Meanwhile, they're not published, or known outside of RUclips.
    As for printing, Thomas Heaton just bought a large format printer that he did a nice video on re. calibration, color profiles, etc.

    You're a humble man! Loved this video and it relates 1000% to many of us. First of all, I love your work. You're great in front of the camera and behind it, but..., there are no buts, LOL. Also love that old good toy on your right hand at the back! I remember when I lived in Canada that I was doing music, and I had the same problem; many people used to tell me "yeah, that sounds great" but it wasn't what I wanted to hear, I wanted honest opinion and critiques, but it's difficult! Anyway, keep rocking, man. Many of the good things in life come with experience and making mistakes! Cheers

    This is the 1st of your videos I've seen. Is very refreshing to see your modesty and honesty.
    Good luck with your progress. I was in the same situation a few years ago. I still don't think I've advanced much.
    The only advice I can give regarding printing is photograph knowing how you want to print and show a little extra space around the image. If you plan to sell prints don't overdo estimate the size you can sell. E.g. in England prints to frame of approximately 20 x 16 inches or A3+ sold best for me.
    Good luck.

    Yep! I understand totally! I’m only a year into learning about photography and what you said here resonates with me. I’m going to write down specific skills to learn (I think I’ll borrow flash photography and portraiture from your list) and a timeline to learn them in. I’ll be back to see how your journey is going, and hope I can share mine with you.

    Great reflection. I am pretty much in the same boat. Same skillsets to learn: Posing, lighting and building a brand/portfolio. Sometimes you just need to admit you have skills to work on despite your past success.
    I need to find a mentor with these skills and find willing models to work with. That is my next step.
    It would be great to see future videos on this topic, documenting your journey. Have a great New year!

    Damn man, this is the most refreshing photography video ive seen in a while and resonated with me as i want to start a collection of my photos, i have them all on Flickr but im not sure if thats a good place to have them, could you recommend anywhere or would i be better getting my own website or is it too soon for me to think about that do you reckon? I have literally just started my photograsphy journey in the beginning of December there so im an absolute beginner and amateur learning as i go watching videos on here (have just subbed to your good self). Im also reading the 'Read this if you want to take great photographs' book by Henry Carroll. For every 20 or so photos i take i get one or two good ones and its such a good feeling when they land, now i just need to get to know my camera modes well and not fear the dreaded manual mode lol. Mainly using aperture priority just now but dabbling in shutter priority too with water and birds.
    Great channel my dude 👌

    I couldn't have stumbled upon a more relatable video. I had a very similar 2024, lots of fly on a wall photography, lots of street photography and people asking me to take photos for them, I even had a band ask me to follow them to their venue and shoot photography for them! One thing I picked up FINALLY was flash photography, I spent all my previous time using natural light or the light I had locally on hand. I bought a new camera (a7rV in September, after using my a6300 for almost a decade), the flash (in November), a 3 light system for videography, but studio photog as well, a new tripod (was using a flimsy PoS manfroto for years, about time!), a new camera bag, a secondary pocket light for fill, hair, or accent lighting, and I just picked up a wireless lav set!
    I grew a lot last year in photography, but now for this year, I plan to step it up with using Fill flash, learn to work with clients/subjects, like posing, and hopefully will get into model work/Real Estate/more auto photog as well. I also plan to start doing solo videography (since I can never seem to gather people anymore for a group project), and get back into script writing. Would love to join a community of small filmmakers/photographers to keep myself more motivated (my day job is an engineer, though I'd like a switch)

    I would suggest trying flash, but not depending on it. Use constant light. Even a $30 LED lighting unit can do as much as my $300 Rotolight Neo could do, and you can add them together. It's amazing what you can do with constant light, especially when you can tune it to your current conditions. Hope you find what makes things right for you.

    • @caffeinatedcameras
      @caffeinatedcameras  16 часов назад +1

      Yeah I use constant light all the time, but strobes and flashes work better in some circumstances. Thank you!

  • @ansleythestewart
    @ansleythestewart День назад +2

    In regards to #3: learning the technical/science part of lighting/strobes, etc., isn't difficult. You've got a fantastic grip on it already. The most challenging part is making sure that when a stranger tells you "make me look good!", y'all are both on the same page for what THEY define that as. Perception is a MF'r and being able to quickly and effectively decipher what that subject believes their "best" look is, is a legit skill. Kinda like telling someone they remind you of someone, that that person thinks is a gargoyle, and you think is attractive. Being able to show up and have a stranger trust you is the nuance to great portraiture. The lighting part is just there to support it once you know what "the look", is. A photographers' biases can insult the absolute living F out of clients, with no ill intent whatsoever, if that initial and deep communication isn't priority.

    In general, I feel this way with almost everything I do (especially when I have a camera in hand).
    I think the opposite of the Duning-Kruger Effect, where one overestimates their ability, is not just Imposter Syndrome... but something else--which I have and sounds like you might, too.
    Chronically underestimating one's abilities probably makes someone more likely to get better at a task... but also makes them very rarely acknowledge the talent that they already have and that, relatively speaking, they are already proficient enough.
    Long and short, I agree with that whole list and great video... but also, I'd bet that you already had all the talent that you needed on that day to be able to pose and photograph people... if those intrusive thoughts and self-doubt didn't creep in and cloud your process.
    Sorry, maybe I'm projecting , but I definitely relate to that experience.

    There are generally two different types of event photographers. Those who take staged photographs and those who take candid photographs. Some event photographers market themselves as ‘only’ taking candid photographs - which some people prefer compared to staged photographs because they are more organic.

    Don’t compare someone else’s highlight reel to your gag roll. The most admired photographers didnt always know what to do every single time they had to take a photograph and they made plenty of mistakes, but despite all that they’re still photographers and so are you. Just because you’re not advanced as you’d like to be doesn’t mean you’re less of a. Photographer for it

    Professional photographer here. I have never used flash in my life, and not interested in it. Everyone has their style. I don't like flash because I like to hover, and not draw attention to myself. Another important note is that I shoot mostly architecture, though I do quite a bit of concerts as well. If you would like an honest critique of your work, I would be happy to help.

    Wish you the best of luck….the value of photography is slowly/quickly being eroded by social media and AI sadly….and unfortunately everyone carries a camera now with apps that make poor photos look good.Pock the right genre and you’ll be ok…..for now…..seriously though all the very best.👍🏻

    I think you have a bit of imposter syndrome, but I think its healthy, and its good to place higher standards. I know of many "professional" photographers in my area that are years behind your level already. And I know competent photographers who choose to do photography as a hobby and not for income.
    There's a lot to unpack. Photography comes in many forms with huge differences throughout. Being a product photographer vs event, it's like the two mediums have practically nothing to do with one another. One gives you time, crafting the scene and lighting, the other is working with what you get and making the best by being sensitive to the surroundings (but ultimately lacking a lot of control).
    Posing people as well... just be careful here. I felt like you (still do), but the more I look into it sometimes I find the end result are just awful looking posed people. I started to feel that directing this much with the process can ruin the experience and dilute any personality from the images. When you realise that greats like Phil Sharp will work with actors and actresses, shoot only one person per day, have no time limit on the shoot and take THOUSANDS of images in that day (hunting for micro subtleties in expressions)... you start to gather better expectations. I'm not saying ignore it, just be careful, don't learn something that actually can make things look worse than taking time to connect with people and allowing their own expression to come through. It's a fine line.
    And then of course there is photography that has nothing to do with paid work but project based work, something that you might turn into a book or exhibition. We don't have to charge a fee with a camera to call ourselves 'photographers', I think you just have to love it and have a bit of an aim with it. Perhaps you fall in the cracks right now, neither having an aim or project in mind, nor charging a fee for work. But a camera around your neck 24/7 is certainly a great start, gathering skills and muscle memory. The difference I feel lies with purpose.
    Flash is very important, yes. I feel of all the things that have accelerated my growth is being competent with strobes. But also realise that this is a niche, it teaches you much more about light but I don't really get many opportunities to crack out more than 2 lights in my work (but I'm still glad I learned it, I see natural light, walls, curtains (natural diffusers), theatre lights etc in a whole new way.

    Being a "photographer" doesn't necessarily involve being able to direct people, take portraits, or take photos of people in general. I hate taking staged/directed photos of people. I enjoy taking photos of architecture, nature, scenes, and abstractions. I don't think that makes me any less of a photographer. I don't think Ansel Adams would be particularly great at taking action shots of drift cars, but that doesn't make him a lesser photographer than Larry Chen, for example.

    • @caffeinatedcameras
      @caffeinatedcameras  14 часов назад +1

      Totally agree. I’m definitely not saying that’s the only way to be a photographer! I said it’s the standard / the skill I expect of myself.
