Somehow, and I am still really not sure how this happened, Mr Bill and Lady Caldwell-Holmes from the Fuel Power RUclips channel ( / @fuelpower ) and I ended up at Oakley Hall near Basingstoke on 29th September 2022 for the SMMT Drive Day South, where we got to drive and film a number of different cars from different manufacturers, having around just half an hour with each of them to film a review. Naturally, things took a bit of a shambolic turn, as they usually do on this channel...
The next car was the 2022 Vauxhall/Opel Astra L (Mark VIII) 1.2 GS-Line Manual, based on the current Peugeot 308 platform. Be prepared for a nice manual gearbox, rather a lot of touch screen action, a new registration area for Vauxhall press cars. and very little of any interest at all. Nothing untoward, then!

I like these a lot - the first genuinely interesting ‘Vauxhall’ in years
I believe you miss-pronounced Peugeot there 😉 as a Vauxhall fanboy I certainly love my Insignia or the Astra K Elite 1.6 looks a good proposition with 200hp. But yes overall the designs have been handsome and inoffensive rather than striking and modern in recent times
This seems to be the way that they are all going from what I remember.
Interesting that you should comment on the mark 1 Astra as there are hints of that shape at the trailing edge of the rear doors in the triangular shapes. But £28k for an Astra seems a bit steep. I guess inflation has hit the automotive industry but once upon a time a mid spec Astra was in the under £20k bracket.
Ahh, my friend once upon a time a mid spec astra was £4k 👍
Yes, car prices are rising, both new and used, and this is a typical price for an Astra these days. The Mark I Astra review, along with all the other Astras we have had on the channel (there are quite a few) is in the video description below if you wish to have a look.
I like this a lot, but I think there is more Peugeot/Citroen Switch gear in there which is not a bad thing, I think the styling is just right.
Excellent Review as always Sir.
Glad you enjoyed it, sir! Only two more to go now from the SMMT event now.
I don't usually get very excited about modern cars but I do like to figure out if they are evolution or revolution, preferably inspired by older designs, like the Rover SD1 or Renault Supercinq.
On this new Astra I see hints of Ford Focus, Skoda and Fiat Tipo in the rear treatment. The nose and bonnet has definite Chevrolet Camaro influence.
So well done Stellantis, very clever.
Those teeny tiny centrally positioned rear wipers really give me the giggles. Are they there to ease the transition from left hand drive to right, or are they simply a fashion accessory ? Either way they are hopeless.
The Chevron uses the Lion to refine the Griffin.
I prefer Chrome and silver alloys as well as a chrome face.
Sir, I am glad that you enjoyed this video. It seems to have been quite popular with the viewers, who seem to have liked it even more than I did. It is better to have a rear wiper than not, the MG4 seems to have shown that when I tested one the same day.
Ordered mine in June 22. 14 months later i'm still waiting.
Goodness me, that's a long time to wait for an Astra, isn't it?
Didn't say if you could replace a headlight bulb within 3 minutes....just joking, but its one of my gripes on modern cars.
As for this car, I was not a fan of its skin on 1st viewing, but watching you're decent review, its growing on me!
The 2 info screens are great, but cosmetic fitting should be even better at some point....having said that, both info screens are probably the best flush fit I've seen on an average modern car!
Really quite happy about the rest the car and although its looks so different, there is still a little reminder of the previous models rear end, which I always liked.
Thanks Joseph.
Thank you, sir! These are done under quite a time constraint, but to a higher level of production than the normal videos, as we do them together, so I am glad you enjoyed it. The flush screens do look very much up to date, I ultimately don't think this is the right trim level for me, but they at least have abandoned the previously extremely confusing trim structure, which makes it far easier to understand.
We had a Vauxhall Astra L, but it didn't look like that 🤣and I always wanted a GL to get a rev counter
Sir, if you look in the video description, then you may find the review of another Astra L!
👍ours was the ubiquitous MK2 strong engine hard "German" ride
@@TrevorBuick , I am hoping to drive a Mark II at some point.
We do like a physical knob Joseph. The Golf 8 doesn't have a bonnet gas struts either . Not keen on the red trim on door cards or the black badges. I am sure its a great overall car but just doesn't really feel like a vauxhall to me. Thanks for the review.
Yes sir, it doesn't seem like a traditional Vauxhall as it doesn't have any General Motors input whatsoever. Whether this is someone's taste or not, I suppose is up to the individual person.
Glad you’ve looked at this. Best. ‘Interesting’ Astra in years.
If you look in the video description, sir, you will see just many Astras we have done on the channel so far....
Will you be doing a review of the sports tourer version of the new astra?
Thank you, Steff! At the moment, I am not sure, it depends if we are able to get hold of one for review. Hope you enjoyed the video.
I'm guessing the power fold mirrors need the switch turning to the power fold function icon before they'll work.
Yes, that is probably right! Thank you ever so much indeed for watching.
not sure if we'll get this in Australia now Holden is gone. But Kia and Hyundai have the sector sewn up here..
Yes, Kia and Hyundai are big sellers over here these days too. Don't think you will get the Astra L in Australia, sadly.
After i bought an Insignia 2018 model, pretty much everything new, even in 2023, is a disappointment. Touch screen and bluetooth in the Insignia is real quick to connect. I tried in 22 mokka, not nearly as easy and fast connection. And interior is much more soft material in Insignia. And its intensely well driven. Smooth, soft and fast. Only negative i can think of, is its a bit slow to gear up (automatic gear).
Thank you very much indeed for watching! Never driven an Insignia B, but I do hope to at some point. These newer Vauxhalls and Opels have nothing in common at all with the older ones, as they are all Stellantis related rather than General Motors.
These new generation Vauxhalls post GM look very smart. I'd prefer one in a brighter colour than this grey and black combination though.
Yes, I would probably prefer a different colour without the black wheels too, personally. You are right that it does look quite smart!
Slight echoes of Mk1 Astra in the C pillar . As with most cars now pleasant enough on the outside, utterly catastrophic inside.
Yes, I suppose there is a bit of resemblance. The inside is a bit dark for my taste, I must admit, but then again that is the same with an awful lot of new cars I drive.
Not a fan of these touchscreen obsessed dashboards but otherwise a great looking car
Seems to be the way that these things are these days, I am afraid...
@@lloydvehicleconsulting definitely, it's a case of take it or leave it. Interesting to see how dashboards will look in another 20 years
@@Mouse2113 , I suppose we won't be able to tell at the moment, will we?
It’s like Back to the Future modern cars
It's very different from the previous Astra K, isn't it, sir?
@@lloydvehicleconsulting pleasant ly impressed
I'm still reserving judgement on this Astra; there are some things that I like, and some that I am neutral.
I'm also conflicted about the styling. £28,000 is a bit steep, but I remember the Chevrolet Cruze costing about that here in the US in dollars 💵 before being discontinued.
I wish Stellantis would import small vehicles like this instead of trucks; many who want small cars like an Astra have to go with Toyota, Nissan, Kia or Hyundai. I loathe this truck craze, it is so vulgar!
Yes, the American manufacturers have abandoned this segment entirely! Now that Vauxhall have nothing to do with General Motors, we are seeing a new direction for them, I think. £28,000 is normal for a car of this type these days, I think. I remember the Cruze, this is not based on that platform at all, of course.
Interesting, looks very much like the Hyundai Iconiq
I suppose it does from the back in particular. Thank you for watching, my friend!
It's definitely different I'll give it that.
It is completely different from the Astra K, isn't it?
@@lloydvehicleconsulting
Yes looks very different, did you feel that some of the Vauxhall DNA has somewhat been diluted.
@@paulie-Gualtieri. , sir, there is no General Motors DNA in this new Astra at all.
6th
Looking forward to tomorrow's video, sir?
@@lloydvehicleconsulting Absolutely, sir
1.2 three cylinders is just not enough
Seemed to be OK to me! I have owned less powerful three cylinder cars myself of this size and they were more than adequate in that regard.
Shame ive allways been a big fan of vauxhall and peugeot but this car is Hateful ugly horrible thing with hideous black badges and wheels .
The black wheels are not to my taste, I must say, I would prefer a different colour, I think.
