I got to fly with the McDowells at the Wild West Wing race in LA and last month with Team Legit- they are the best builders around and Heather can out fly myself and most other pilots I know! You go girl!
I had Shane and Heather build a wing for me that I received on Monday. The build quality is OUTSTANDING !! Shane comminicated with me during the entire process sending me pictures and even video of its maiden. I can't express how pleased I am with the Flashgangsters. Johnny over at team-legit home base has been great from the start aldo. Taking time to answer my questions and put my concerns to bed before my purchase and even forwarded the order direct to the Shane for the build. I have excessively pleased from the first conversation to the arrival of my wing.
+Heather McDowell - It is so awesome to see couples working together at what they love. 😉👍🏼 How much does it cost for a kit that you and Shane build? I would love to get one from you guys.
Hey Chad! Go to the TL website (www.team-legit.com) and choose your wing. The builds are there as a line item. Just put "please forward to flashgangsters for the build" and they'll forward the wing to us. You'll also have to keep in mind shipping from TX to you will be an additional cost :) If you any other questions, feel free to message me, Heather, or Johnny Meg.
Hey guys. I have a conundrum! I bought a taranis x9d plus. When I updated the firmware after watching painless360s video, I notice when I turn it on the screen turns white and it buzzes (even in bootloader mode). Have you any idea on what to do? Thanks for producing great content (and you too flight test lol).
Josh Bixler That's just going to make it even more special Josh. I can't believe the love and passion both of them put into their builds. Can't help but admire them so much. So glad that you guys got them on Flite Test.
Absolutely love it. Great to see another couple who build and fly together!Ya'll are just about ready to step it up to composites. Vacuum bagging anyone?
You can get good at 'laminating'; you just have to spend a little time applying monocote! It's a skill you have to develop, to keep the wrinkles out, etc. I'm not so interested in high speed on my wing...I really look forward to visually exploring the neighborhood, taking pictures, that kinda thing. But it's good to see there's a whole industry building up from wings!
It seems obvious to leave some space between the iron and the paint, so I do not know why I kept failing to do that ! 😜 I will try to keep in mind how you worked: Part of it might be having a place arranged; free from other building debris and tools. Having what you need and everything else out of the way/area. At work it was a habit and a requirement (medical device production) - referred to as “line clearance”. So easy to forget how much better working in a clean work area is when I want to get to building. Thank you both (and the flite test folks). Are there any warnings or cautionary tails you can/should share re: two-handed over the head launch technique?
This laminating film is the same that is used in the press industry. I bought a full roll from eBay quite cheaply, great stuff. I now cover all my foam and EPP planes.
I absolutely love the racing wings, and have a pile of about 4 in my garage, great way to get into the hobby and an awesome air frame. Looking forward to getting my hands on a team legit wing in this future. Currently flying a crash test hobby pinata.
i have a cool challenge i thought about and i immediately thought about you guys, the idea is to try to create the biggest plane with the smallest engine forcing you to take full advantage of lift ;D
We use to glass our 160mph 6S Multiplex Funjet with light glass and water clean up Minwax Polycrylic for strength. The regular shrink aircraft covering material wasn't strong enough.
i built a cesna super skymaster out of an old apprentice. cut the tail off, shortened the wing, added a second eng, put twin booms on it. pretty cool, very fast.
Are you guys familiar with the old wings called boomerangs? I have an old kit I never built and want to put together with modern motors and such. Any suggestions on batteries and other components that make the stuff that was used 15 years ago useless? I also have a st10+ remote from a chroma so I'm curios if that could be used so I could add a camera?
Great video guys! I have a question about the EPP/Paint/Laminate layering process. I fly EPP wings and I really like the look of the painted wing but whenever I have tried to paint the foam before laminating the lamination grabs the paint instead of the foam and after a few crashes to pull it apart I get a bag of lamination filled with paint surrounding the wing... I have suspected I am putting too much paint on and have lightened up a lot which hasn't really solved the problem and has lead to very pastel colored wings. Granted I have never used super77 so maybe that is the trick Anyway these wings look amazing and the color is vibrant and awesome. Are there any suggestions the McDowell family could share on how they achieve their paint jobs? Or should I just go start by getting some super77? Thanks!
The super77 will help out a lot with your problem. That is the exact reason we use it! I use acrylic paint and paint it on with a paintbrush. I think that acrylic covers the best and it makes it very easy to repair the paint if you need to later on.
Great video Josh. Heather and Shane make a really nice looking wing. I have a couple of questions. Does the laminate heat shrink like Monocote? How many mils is the material?
It is similar. The key thing that really helped me was the super 77 process and that they started from the middle. When I cover, I go leading edge to trailing edge. The film was 3 mil.
Hey guys i wanted to know if you could revisit this topic as a way to make entry line DLG's (like the libelle from dream-flight) more durable? is it worth it or would it add to much weight? Keep up the good work
at 0:08 love the concentration on her face, like an Olympic gymnast about to start a routeen ha ha but i guess shes got " i dont want that prop in my face" on her mind!
believe no the clovers send a polarized signal so the sender receiver pair should be polarized the same way. The straight rubber antenna are omnidirectional but I think typically not as good. Some systems allow multiple antenna but you'd still want them paired.
Interesting she is also modeling for Team Legit on the website. Great to see wives getting involved. Now I need to get my wife involved. Will have to get her to watch this video.
LOL! Yeah! Their episodes recently have been a little low in quality by my opinion compared to just a few years ago if not last year. I understand that their editing department is a bit overwhelmed with all the footage ( Thank you editing specialists if you're reading this) but you would have thought they would have gotten another guy by now. I am NOT calling out Flite test for making crapy episodes here but what I am saying is that a bigger editing crew is needed to keep up on the quality of the episodes. It's been kind if a let down seeing a drop in the quality of episodes compared to some fanominal quality ones just a little while ago.
yeah. But the scenes where Josh is speaking to the video audience seemed a little less than what their standards are. I can understand that the on trips like this where a camera crew isn't available the quality will be a little less than normal.
You could, but you'd need to check with the organization you plan to race with. MultiGP for example has a no EDF rule in the books (along with a 2700kv cap). Drone Nationals has a wattage limit. A EDF would also not work very well on a tight course that required speed changes. The sure sound awesome though :)
May I suggest a project/video? One or more of you guys take like an Air Hogs X-wingor Fury Jump Jet, and scratch build a new plane using the guts from the Air Hog.Personally I would like to make, or see someone make and F-22 from an X-wing.I know it would a slower than ever Raptor but, it would be cool looking and maybe a fun flyer?
Jorrit, please make sure you've got the wing balanced. If it's balanced properly, it will fly great. I had great success the first Versa I built that was actually balanced properly.
Important information on lamination plastic here: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1334433. The right choice of skin can make your planes incredibly strong.and stiff. 3mil of plastic is what you want but the stuff shown in the video looked thinner. Sometimes the thickness is given as the sum of the plastic thickness and that of the adhesive, so 3/2 (3 mil plastic, 2 of adhesive) is called "5 mil" so be careful. The stuff in the video may be 2/1 or even 1/2. Plastic comes in two types, DL (stiff) and CL (plyable). I recommend 3/2 CL. Also, film up to3 mil of plastic will heat-shrink a little so it helps if you can tack down the edges first and then hit the interior to shrink it, rather than as shown in the video. Use a low heat setting the first time. Then when it eventually loosens, turn up the heat a little and you'll get some more shrinkage. Eventually you won't get more shrinkage but you can stick it back down anyway until you decide to reskin it. It takes practice to do well but it's not very hard.
Not sure what it's going to be called. It is a mash up I made of a shrunk bloody baron designed by Dan Sponholz and a mini cruiser. It's a crazy fast Fpv machine! Plans and episode to come. :)
We use a NTM 2836 2200kv / 60A ESC / 6X4 APC prop on 4s. High 90mph all day long with this setup on most of the legit wings, faster on the racer. We're testing a Cobra setup right now that is good for a good bit over 100mph (measured with radar gun in no wind and flat, level flight)
Are these the two that started the Facebook group FPV Drama Llama? If so, it’s a shame they are affiliated with the nations biggest and friendliest company, Flite Test. I am going to maiden it this weekend... I hope I don't break it on the first flight... lol

Right On, Thank You for this wonderful spotlight on an amazing couple. These two are definitely a power couple!!.

One very amazing couple!!!
+BMSWEB I got to see and play with the wing they are building for you and your dad. They look amazing!
Josh Bixler That's just going to make it even more special Josh. I can't believe the love and passion both of them put into their builds. Can't help but admire them so much. So glad that you guys got them on Flite Test.
its Legit
Amazing process they use to cover their wings. Never produced one as neat as that. Looking forwards to seeing more episodes with Shane and Heather :D
Great! Been following Flashgangster and Mrsflashgangster and their racing wings for a while now!
It's really nice to see ladies into hobbies and techy stuff. Kudos.
Absolutely love it. Great to see another couple who build and fly together!Ya'll are just about ready to step it up to composites. Vacuum bagging anyone?
Josh and the Gang, Love the new format for working with other people!!!!! Keep these up!!!!!
The flashgangers know how to do it! Keep it coming!
Heather had a nice steady hand with that iron.

Are there any warnings or cautionary tails you can/should share re: two-handed over the head launch technique?
did I miss the part in the video where they showed how to finish off the back part and seal it all up.....seemed like half a video to me
What paint is on the EPP before the adhesive spray? Do you use primer before the paint? Thanks
Always great stuff from Flight Test. I had always been curious about laminating this provides some nice insight. Some great looking wings too
love the new format veryprofessinal.Great video Flite Test has definetly helped me and many others through dark times.Great to see their story.
Thank you brother. Love the talent and heart that exists in this community and in the hobby! We want to tap into the community as much as possible
+Josh Bixler doing an absolutely great job i cant wait to meet you again at flite fest 2016
+Carbon Hawk it's going to be an amazing year friend!
This laminating film is the same that is used in the press industry. I bought a full roll from eBay quite cheaply, great stuff. I now cover all my foam and EPP planes.
This was helpful but the video stopped before they finished. How do they cut it and finish it off?
The new look/feel, looks nice
I absolutely love the racing wings, and have a pile of about 4 in my garage, great way to get into the hobby and an awesome air frame. Looking forward to getting my hands on a team legit wing in this future. Currently flying a crash test hobby pinata.
i have a cool challenge i thought about and i immediately thought about you guys, the idea is to try to create the biggest plane with the smallest engine forcing you to take full advantage of lift ;D
Now I want a race wing lol. First quads now this.
meh I'm sticking with quads for now can go plenty fast... still fun to watch them fly though
i haven't laminated a full wing but i wrapped a scrap strip of DTFB with that stuff and it was insanely strong
That launch technique seems like a great way to catch a prop to the face....
The wings and laminating information is pretty cool though.
Is that covering film the same stuff that you would use on a balsa plane?
Excellent Video! Thanks for sharing this tip. I am really good a crashing Wings, not so much on actually flying them. Maybe some day I will get it.
We still crash a lot. If you aren't crashing, you aren't flying hard enough ;)
Is there a tutorial on how they paint the wings?
New camera? looks really good!
Awsome technique. What specification of lamination is it? Where to source it from?
i really want that little twin that you guys made. looks like a blast to fly fpv with
It's tons of fun brother! Episode to come. :)
I have the same iron, could you tell me what heat number you use? I can not see it clearly in the video. Thank you so much for all this great info.
Always test on the specific EPP that you're laminating. On the Team Legit wings (and most others) we use the 5 setting and 4 on balsa elevons.
+Shane and Heather McDowell (flashgangster) thank you again
You don't have to use spray adhesive, just wipe the epp with alcohol first and the laminate will stick quite well.
Heather fly the best!
This is almost old school. We would use monokote to cover a balsa frame, or a foam core wing.
The super77 will help out a lot with your problem. That is the exact reason we use it! I use acrylic paint and paint it on with a paintbrush. I think that acrylic covers the best and it makes it very easy to repair the paint if you need to later on.
Great! Thanks very much, I will have to try brush on as well.
I was literaly whatching one of their vids then I got this notificatiom
Thank you for that! :)
What film is this? I’d like to buy some here in Brazil but I do t know the name or thickness!
Thanks
Super info video, you guys are great. Thanks
Is it worth laminating a foam board wing (Flite Test Mini Arrow)?
Yes!
How about a spotlight on control-line? That stuff amazes me.
Can you make a race wing speed build kit that has another wingshape than the arrow and is especially made for fpv races?
hello I would like to know what kind of plastic / blade you use to entelar the wing ? (In 3 minutes 47 seconds)
Thank you!
Márcio - São Paulo - Brazil
next up on flite test, we teach you how to build competition-grade memes.
So good. great episode
Can be used monokote or ultracote on foam or depron??
its awesome to see them here ive been fololowing them on instagram for years
It is Possible to use heatgun than iron in laminating?
Can you guys make a new foam glider product with no electronics?
These guys are badass!
I want you & Josh Scott playing with planes again. Please?
I read 'lamenting a race wing' hahaha
lol
This is so awesome nice to see more girls coming into the hobby :)
Great informative show
great podcasts thank you!
FT can you please make the st71 "Black bird" in all forms ( swappable, mini, etc.) thanks and keep it up guys you all make a really good job.
+Flite Test
Fantastic vid!
hi flitetest i went to scitech in perth and i saw the ft sparrow and thought thats from flitetest and it has plans for the ft sparrow
+FliteTest
Shane is one lucky dude!
Hey guys i wanted to know if you could revisit this topic as a way to make entry line DLG's (like the libelle from dream-flight) more durable? is it worth it or would it add to much weight?
Keep up the good work
What model wing are they covering? Can you provide a link to purchase?
That is the FG36. www.team-legit.com
Thanks!
team-legit.com/Legit-Wing-FG36-KIT-100-Hand-Made-in-the-USA_p_205.html You guys have a build video for this wing?
looks like the FG36 team-legit.com/Legit-Wing-FG36-KIT-100-Hand-Made-in-the-USA_p_205.html
+Heather McDowell what paint did you use?
at 0:08 love the concentration on her face, like an Olympic gymnast about to start a routeen ha ha but i guess shes got " i dont want that prop in my face" on her mind!
What is 3mil (probably some imperial unit) in microns (metric)?
can y'all do a review on a hydrofoam
Crashtest hobby has been doing this for a long time
What do they use for paint?
what mil laminate you guys recommend? is 10 mil too thick?
can't wait to get my FOHDY! this video will help
hey flitetest team! great video! i have a question about antennas: does a cloverleaf antenna goes well with the classic straight antenna?
believe no the clovers send a polarized signal so the sender receiver pair should be polarized the same way. The straight rubber antenna are omnidirectional but I think typically not as good. Some systems allow multiple antenna but you'd still want them paired.
rcmodelreviews channel has a few videos covering antenna type and quality if you want details
+Shaun Husain thank you i think i will put a straight antenna on both transmitter and receiver because i don't have two paired cloverleaf antennas
Interesting she is also modeling for Team Legit on the website. Great to see wives getting involved. Now I need to get my wife involved. Will have to get her to watch this video.
flite test is sooooo cool they inspires me to buy the focal fpv goggles
0:58 that camera quality tho!
LOL! Yeah! Their episodes recently have been a little low in quality by my opinion compared to just a few years ago if not last year. They had no filming crew with them this time. It was just Josh, Jen and other people who were around getting some video while they visited the gang.
yeah. But the scenes where Josh is speaking to the video audience seemed a little less than what their standards are. I can understand that the on trips like this where a camera crew isn't available the quality will be a little less than normal.
can you make a racing wing have a ducted fan?
You could, but you'd need to check with the organization you plan to race with. MultiGP for example has a no EDF rule in the books (along with a 2700kv cap). Drone Nationals has a wattage limit. A EDF would also not work very well on a tight course that required speed changes. The sure sound awesome though :)
Look shiny and cool...👍🏻
May I suggest a project/video? One or more of you guys take like an Air Hogs X-wingor Fury Jump Jet, and scratch build a new plane using the guts from the Air Hog.Personally I would like to make, or see someone make and F-22 from an X-wing.I know it would a slower than ever Raptor but, it would be cool looking and maybe a fun flyer?
Best video yet!
What temp is your iron set to?
I scratch build versawing but i cant fly it really good, it cant keep the controll over the plane in the air. Any tips?
Less throws and make sure you c.g is right. Always favor a touch nose heavy. :)
try a flight stabilizer like the naze32 with openpilot
Jorrit, please make sure you've got the wing balanced. If it's balanced properly, it will fly great. I had great success the first Versa I built that was actually balanced properly.

Why is 1.5 mil film not used but the 3mil is?
+Shane McDowell dude!!!! so jelouse
please make one episode about rc autogyros
New Flight Test video: Thumbs up and then watch video......
can we get a new video about ardupilot because ALOT has changed!!!! Please!!!!!!
Awesome Stuff
Last time I was this early, I was prescribed medication for it
what is that plane josh is holding on 6:30 ?
Not sure what it's going to be called. It is a mash up I made of a shrunk bloody baron designed by Dan Sponholz and a mini cruiser. It's a crazy fast Fpv machine! Plans and episode to come. :)
+Josh Bixler awesome look forward to it!
call it the bloody cruiser :)
SPOTTED A DRAK!
That's John's Drak. His channel is ruclips.net/user/hman2853
that was mine!!
could you build a f 35 plz ?
flashgangsters!!
is that a twin motor Bloody Baron? new?
It's a mix of a shrunk Bloody Baron and a Mini Cruiser and according to Josh it's an upcoming kit :)
Lucky guy, hot wife and she is interested in the hobby. What else can you ask for?
Absolutely nothing :) Well, our daughter has an interest in wings. She's 4. I'd like for her to take after her mom ;)
you are lucky, my wife doesnt like this hobby... especially the price.
Does anyone know what kind of power system is used on these faster legit wings?
We use a NTM 2836 2200kv / 60A ESC / 6X4 APC prop on 4s. High 90mph all day long with this setup on most of the legit wings, faster on the racer. We're testing a Cobra setup right now that is good for a good bit over 100mph (measured with radar gun in no wind and flat, level flight)

flite test please do a review on focal fpv goggles
trop bien !
Sound is a bit "echo"-like. Could you please add sub-titles. Thanks !
Flight test could you build a me262
I add extra points.
