You got it right Dave, I agree, every memory I have of camping had rocks around the fire pit. It’s timeless. There is a lot of fire proof material you can use and it’s all good, but rocks around the fire pit with a cup of coffee, or a cold brew is perfection.
Thanks for the simplicity of this video. This is my first project on our property since my husband passed a year ago. We kept talking about getting to it, but his illness got in the way. I am finally at the point where I can continue where we left off from our plan. Just a part of the healing process now. I figure the fire pit will be done by his birthday in May. My Dave and I worked well together, a lot like you and Brooke do. Give God thanks everyday for that blessing. I still do, I thank Him we had it for almost 40 yrs together that way.♥
Im sorry for your loss I really mean that. It's still difficult for my grandmother even after 10 years of my grandpa passing. The Bible says married couples become one flesh, and when a marriage mate passes its like becoming an amputee. You've lost part of you. I give you my condolences. Thank you for sharing your story.
You know Dave being here in Scotland we don’t have this concept of a real woodsman but I just love the concept and since we don’t have the spatial wilderness you guys seem to have, watching Bush radical allows my mind to wander and escape to this fantastic wonderland you guys enjoy. I am so in awe. 👍🏴⭐️❤️
Need to let you know, that very similar to you 2, we just purchased an of grid piece in high country Arizona. Though your house was in much better shape, due to long term vacancy. Let the sweat equity begin, 2 weeks ago we took the 60 foot mobile down to the frame, rehab'd a step van that was left behind so know we have temporary shelter. Going back in 2 weeks for more clean up. Amazing how much you can get in a 40 yd roll off. Send you pictures if I knew where.
I've been making firepits out of rocks. Then one day I thought, I'm gonna get that little iron firepit that everyone in suburbia has, that I've been wanting. Eh. It collects water. The ash cover rusted in a few weeks. And then I stopped sitting by the fire. That thing wasn't as good as the rocks. Im going back to rocks and back to enjoying my fires. You just made me think what happened. Keep keepin' it real, Dave. 👍
In Dances with Wolves, the elder Sioux Ten Bears said that, "at his age, there's nothing better than a good fire". I'm not that old, but I have to agree with him. Simple expectations, simple pleasures; keys to good living. Thanks Dave, hope you get to come back up to AK this summer. Peace to you & Brooke from Delta.
This is the most high-quality youtube tutorial I have ever seen. I love it. However, you do want to ensure the area around the circumference of the pit is inflammable in case any sparks fly out.
I've lived in my property for 11 years, and for 11 years I've been talking about putting a fire pit out back. But, somewhere in the back of my brain was a voice telling me that it's hard to get them right. You removed every one of those obstacles, and simplified it down to a few easy steps. Thank you!
I still could listen to you all day! Great advice for making a fire pit! Love the idea of placing flat rocks for cooking too. All great ideas! Thanks for taking us along Dave! God’s blessings to you, Brooke, and family!❤
Campfire philosophy 101 🧡🔥❤️ I have to say my daughter and I built a pretty awesome campfire pit about 6 years ago...the great thing about stone...no rust, no rot. That pit is as good as new but has a lot of fun history attached to it now!
Dave, you are a philosopher good Sir. I find listening to you soo relaxing and enlightening - thank you! P.S I also developed a taste for Flannel shirts since watching your channel. PPS Your little doggy is very cute.
You're abolutely right Dave. I left Scouting about 10 years ago but I still cherish many fond memories of campfires... the friendships, the songs, the heat of the fires and the inevitably way-too-hot campfire soup 😁
We bought this house 17 years ago, and the first thing I did was gather rocks and put in a fire pit. I’ve used it a thousand times. The garden is twice the size it started out between the chicken poop and the ashes. Sometimes I just burn old wood and listen to the night. A great way to spend a Saturday evening with my wife.
This video could back someone off the ledge. I dont have problems making my fire pits but i figured you'd have a good video. Man this video put me in a good mood
Dave, I love that new piece of property. So far I'm liking it better than your other place that is extremely off grid. I look forward to watching you guys rebuild it.
Gonna join you one day around one of those memory fires! Some of the best times is around the snap and pops, or the dancing of the flame brings revelation to your deepest thoughts. Blessings Dave!
We just watched one of your videos from 4 years ago on a trip up the Alcan Highway. My husband always wanted to do that but now he is almost blind and has several medical issues. He got to see the trip by watching you. He is a retired long haul trucker and asked me to tell you thank you.
Been following you and your wife for couple years now. I don't think I have ever left a comment on utube, but I felt a need to thank you both. I have some remote acreage here in alaska me and my wife have committed ourselves to building a cabin this summer. Thanks for the inspiration looking forward to your next video Tim & Sharon
This is my favorite fire pit instructional ! Yesterday we kayaked to a spoiler island in the Gulf of Mexico. On the island was a stone fire pit that someone had crafted out of the natural limestone rocks from the beach. Our boys had a blast burning fallen pine tree branches. It made me realize it doesn’t take much to build a beautiful fire pit. It’s all about the memories and the people we love.
You know Dave's in shape when he doesn't bother to back the truck up right to the pit. Carrying the huge rocks 50 yards makes them more special. My new invention is a chimnea chimney thing that has a more open, more tactical , triangle type base so the fire light goes all the way around the ring , no one is deprived, they would be if you used one with the bulb base. Inside the smoke stack is a stove fan that continues to suck the smoke upwards. Sidenote: For my smaller backwoods camp stoves , I built an "Ikea Woodstove" out of a 10" cylindrical steel kitchen utensil holder. It has vent holes already. Three bucks online. What I do now is insert 1-2" thick kindling in VERTICALLY so the burn is far more efficient. Much less smoke. It's almost like a Swedish log . In fact you could insert a 6" log in it, split 4 ways, with the starter (birch bark, fatwood) in the middle. This creates a higher, brighter "flame tower". And if you have some good hardwood, will produce a blue flame. You can also sit really close to it, so adding wood is not a problem. You don't have to get up. Yeah the smoke game is hilarious though when an acoustic jam is going on . Then your guitar smells like pine ...
Love watching your videos. I try to learn what I can from you. I’ve been looking out for some cheap land in the UP of Michigan or possibly even Minnesota. Im lucky that my career provides me with a few months of off time yearly and I’m young. Just getting into this. Wish me luck! I look forward to the adventure and learning along the way. God bless!
Nice video, Dave. I loved the philosophy you threw in with your good speaking voice and guitar. I can't wait to build the first fire pit at my family's property 🙂
"There's no right way to build a camp fire pit." True, but I appreciate that you kept your fire ring low. I cannot say how often I have been off-roading, found the perfect camp site, only to find a fire ring that someone build up over two feet high, effectively blocking the heat from your legs. The ambiance is still great; but keeping those legs warm on a cold night is pretty nice too.
"the perfect campfire pit is the one you have, in the place that you put it." this is so true for so many things...everybody worries about getting "the best [insert item here]" when they should just enjoy what they have that works for them.
Your description of choosing and placing the rocks reminds me of the way my great grandparents used to build rock walls in rural Texas out of the rocks that they pulled out of the fields, in order to make the fields tillable. Good, honest, fulfilling work. Those rock walls that they build in 1880 are still standing today (except where the land was sold and developers knocked them down). Also, I enjoy the way that you and Brooke always work as a real team. Thanks for another great video Dave, and best of luck to you both.
Dave thank you as an engineer you are brilliant at explaining and simplifying your projects. I loved the fire pit video among the many as it brings me back to my own childhood. Bless you and thanks
I absolutely love your videos. I live in Northern Michigan and would be absolutely awesome to meet you and your wife. Maybe see you somewhere! God bless you and your family.
This video is all I needed to dust off my brain a little and go back in time. I just never thought of it, but reminiscing my days around campfires with friends and family, I've had some pretty good memories around them. Thanks Dave!
Dave, my husband and I now cook ground beef on a skillet on our fire pit, because of your episode on show us your steak. We call it our “Dave Whipple steaks”. It’s our favorite way to spend time out doors and not have to spend a ton of money on meat. Keep up the good work you two. God Bless.
There's nothing like Pine Tree Therapy !! Sitting around the campfire , with not a care in the world . All the stress and the demands of life just seems to melt away ! And like you said you're able to reposition yourself with the things that are really important in life . The things that matter most when you step into eternity !! Your wife your family your children , the ones you love ! And most of all , the condition of your soul !!🙏
NICE! You 'rock it' Dave and Brooke, goes 'out on a limb' to set the ambiance! Go Team! Good points taken. Thanks 4 sharing your time/talents with us! Health and God Bless! :)
Thanks for this! Also, it was nice getting to meet you last weekend at the bushcraft gathering at Lumberman's. I wish I would have gotten there early enough to catch all the presentations not just the last half an hour of how to make a belt but I had some pretty impatient grandkids and the grandson really wanted to see that army truck. But they got to enjoy hanging in some hammocks and learned about that so that's pretty cool I might have some outdoors kids with me soon
There is something so relaxing about a good fire. Like your videos! Its nice when i get some free time at work after a busy stent and i can sit down and watch one of your videos. Its so relaxing. Thanks for the content, and wish you and your wife the best!
Hi again What a great vid Dave. Simple instructional and some perfect things about them! Mesmerizing cozy and comforting and the wonderful place to gather with stories songs and memories. A destresser for sure leading to calm and peace. Then of course the place where it's at for cooking foods that always taste better fireside and of course those yummy smores! A wonderful reminder for all going into the next three seasons. Thx Dave! You and Brooke enjoy yours too. God bless...
Hi Dave, nice fire pit and interesting commentary! Looking forward to watching you and Brooke enjoy many fires and memories on your latest property! God bless! 😊
I've collected so many rocks over the years that they now line all my flower beds. I even made a walkway through one garden with rocks embedded in the soil with the flat side up. Most rocks have a flat side, so it worked perfectly. I was 30 yrs younger when I did it and I remember how rewarding it felt when I was done.
from the small Adobe fire bowl at our house to the propane fire pit we take in our RV to the stone fire pit on our property, they all serve the same purpose. Slow down and tickle that primal part of our brains to stare into the flames and be calm. I personally enjoy the real wood fires myself, but any flame will do. Like you said, good friends/family and good memories. Really enjoying these videos on the new property. Looking forward to many more.
Thanks Dave for the inspiration to get out be creative. You are spot on for building memories and good family bonding time around the camp fire! My best Michigan memories were singing, cooking and sharing the warmth of around camp fires!
I just discovered you and your wife’s channels absolutely love y’all’s work and ideals I will be watching y’all now. I got my own RUclips channel Metal Detecting and it’s fun y’all keeps up the great work friends
Always enjoy the times spent sitting round the fire pit, especially after a busy day it's so relaxing in the evening listening to the crackling, watching the flicker of the flames and feeling the warmth :)
Thank you Mr. Whipple, I honestly don't care what you are talking about, although I find your subjects interesting, I just love the sound of your voice. Both you and Brooke give me comfort, continuity, and grounding in a crazy world. Something about rational people with good hearts calmly explaining something basic and common-sensical, interspersed with video of hard work that helps me sleep at night. Thank you, both of you. You are connecting us all with our humanity - an invaluable service to the world.
Oh my goodness this simple video is amazing I’ll say every time your voice and editing are top-notch I feel like I just watch Mutual of Omaha thank you Dave. 🙌🥳☺️
Built mine out of the limestone rocks that come out of the ground on my property on a very regular basis. There was a single cement slab, all by itself, right in the middle of my rather large backyard, no one knows why it's there, but I took one look at it, the limestone rocks that the previous owner had stacked neatly in a corner of the yard, and knew I had a firepit. It's been very popular, we've held a lot of events around that firepit. Great video, awesome job on your new pit, thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Dave, I always enjoy seeing you and your wife pray over your meal and I really enjoy the clean language in your videos! I just wanna ask, how long have you been saved?
I got a fire built on the garden spot makes for some good ole charcoal ash to turn into the soil.made some great steaks and sausage with my grandson last night.love your videos so much greatness in each one

To have read your post makes me glad my ancestor left Germania nearly 300years ago.
Hope you can find a nice spot to camp at soon
I think he should stfu ...his weird gentle poem rants are anoyying an retarded
Nothing better than a warm fire and people of your tribe to make a night memorable.
Well done, Best-Jim snd Tara

Since I'm housebound and can no longer enjoy these things, even a less than 5 minute video of you making a campfire pit is fun. Thank you!
I love you and your wife's videos. The short and the longer ones. Keep'em coming. Be radical ❤
Who knew you could learn so much about life from a fire pit. Thanks!
Couldn’t have said it better myself ! It’s not rocket science …. Just a simple place where memories make themselves ! Take care Dave
You have a great voice for story telling. So calm and soothing.
This is the most high-quality youtube tutorial I have ever seen. I love it.

It's all about the B roll. 😀 Great content, great voice over narration. Dave, you put together perfect videos in my book!
I still could listen to you all day! Great advice for making a fire pit! Love the idea of placing flat rocks for cooking too. All great ideas! Thanks for taking us along Dave! God’s blessings to you, Brooke, and family!❤

As you shown it lit,,I smelled the great pine wood burning and it Brought back many camp trips......thank you
You're very blessed to have your wife and family. Keep up the great videos please.
A perfect fire is what you make of it. My Native American friends considered a camp fire as sacred. To me that’s a great starting point thanks Dave 😊
Campfire philosophy 101 🧡🔥❤️ I have to say my daughter and I built a pretty awesome campfire pit about 6 years ago...the great thing about stone...no rust, no rot. That pit is as good as new but has a lot of fun history attached to it now!

Nice to hear and see you again,
Spring time is near can't wait to watch you fix up your new place. Always a pleasure Dave
Love it Dave! I have been known to move my fire pit around. But now I have found the perfect place! In life as well.
Hi Brook & Dave! That's awesome fireplace rocks is the way to go Thanks for sharing! You guys rock! (get it? Rock) LOL hugs to you both.
Dave, you are a philosopher good Sir. I find listening to you soo relaxing and enlightening - thank you! P.S I also developed a taste for Flannel shirts since watching your channel. PPS Your little doggy is very cute.
Ah... the soothing sounds of Dave's voice just made my Sunday. Thank you! 😊✌

Dave, gotta say, I really love your pearls of wisdom 😊. ❤ from Canada 🇨🇦 (sorry )
Great stuff. Who knew there is a great life lesson to building a fire pit?
We bought this house 17 years ago, and the first thing I did was gather rocks and put in a fire pit. I’ve used it a thousand times. The garden is twice the size it started out between the chicken poop and the ashes. Sometimes I just burn old wood and listen to the night. A great way to spend a Saturday evening with my wife.
Just the bit of peace I needed tonight Dave, thank you.
After subscribing to you channel for over a year I find out my boys went to school with you and your brother! How cool,
Something calming about a camp fire . Enjoy your fire Dave and have a good day 🙏
This video could back someone off the ledge. I dont have problems making my fire pits but i figured you'd have a good video. Man this video put me in a good mood
Dave, I love that new piece of property. So far I'm liking it better than your other place that is extremely off grid. I look forward to watching you guys rebuild it.
There aren't many folks can pull a life lesson out of building a fire ring. You "rock" my friend
Gonna join you one day around one of those memory fires! Some of the best times is around the snap and pops, or the dancing of the flame brings revelation to your deepest thoughts. Blessings Dave!
Bravo! Some of my best times ever have been around a nice fire ring. Great vid….
We just watched one of your videos from 4 years ago on a trip up the Alcan Highway. My husband always wanted to do that but now he is almost blind and has several medical issues. He got to see the trip by watching you. He is a retired long haul trucker and asked me to tell you thank you.
Another great video. Keep doing your thing man.
The fire pit is the heart of the camp, Where good friends meet. Good video, Dave
Been following you and your wife for couple years now. I don't think I have ever left a comment on utube, but I felt a need to thank you both. I have some remote acreage here in alaska me and my wife have committed ourselves to building a cabin this summer. Thanks for the inspiration looking forward to your next video

lovely. thank you for this simple, beautiful video,
This is my favorite fire pit instructional !
The property is looking good! A big change already. Csn’t wait to see what it looks like when you are finished! I will be here for the longhaul!
I could listen to your narration and guitar playing all day.thanks for the zen dave.
Love your videos. I built a small rocket stove out of some used fire bricks, and it it a great addition to heat water, cook beans, etc.
God bless!
You two have really cleaned up the new place...looking good!
Nice video, Dave. I loved the philosophy you threw in with your good speaking voice and guitar.
I can't wait to build the first fire pit at my family's property 🙂
We had a fire pit like that one at our previous home. I sure do miss it. Thanks for the memories.
I loved this video and that you guys are cleaning off the property. I love to see an old place start looking good.
"There's no right way to build a camp fire pit." True, but I appreciate that you kept your fire ring low. I cannot say how often I have been off-roading, found the perfect camp site, only to find a fire ring that someone build up over two feet high, effectively blocking the heat from your legs. You've answered some burning questions there Dave. Just love seeing all the family team work going on.
David in the UK.
Your description of choosing and placing the rocks reminds me of the way my great grandparents used to build rock walls in rural Texas out of the rocks that they pulled out of the fields, in order to make the fields tillable. You two are great stewards of the land. You improve the area wherever you land. God bless you all!!
Such a simple project, with all the right words to describe it's majic!
Love your videos. At 90 years you inspire me.
Rocks are free & just look correct! 👍 Absolutely agree! Can't wait to see the renovation videos!
Such a great description of building a fire pit, perfect!!!

Hi Dave, nice fire pit and interesting commentary! Looking forward to watching you and Brooke enjoy many fires and memories on your latest property! God bless! 😊
If Dave could write a book like he narrates his videos, it would be a best seller. 👌
"Making a fire pit, out of rocks, is like life in general..." Mind blown at those truth bombs!!!!🤯
That's a neat little video Dave. You're absolutely right, great memories are made around a good fire pit.
Love it!! The only change I would make is...I would have picked a spot closer to the truck hauling the rocks! lol I groaned with you!
I've collected so many rocks over the years that they now line all my flower beds. I even made a walkway through one garden with rocks embedded in the soil with the flat side up. Perfect fire pit is indeed about who you share it with. Perfect, Sir!
Your videos really hit the spot. So enjoyable!
