Alton Brown's sugar cookie/cutout cookie is very good. I've used this recipe ever since it was put out. Never a complaint. My wife prefers them with a milk and powdered sugar glaze.
I’ve been using the Bravetart rolled sugar cookie recipe for years. I’m known for them throughout the neighborhood! Minor mods: I use salted butter but don’t omit the salt. I omit the almond extract (I make these for neighbors & shop employees and tree nut allergies are common.) in favor of a bit more vanilla. I sometimes use vanilla paste instead of scraping a vanilla bean (either one will do the job here, but don’t skip both!). They can be dyed with gel colors and decorated with sugars and sprinkles. If you’re have intricate shapes, use the first and second rollouts for those. After that, the cookies will spread and you’ll lose some of the detail. The fourth rollout is best for chef snacks and making into crumbs for bars & pies. Enjoy!
