I’d agree but the main and flex support part is kind of misleading. The more important distinction for new players to know is the difference between high healing supports like Baptiste, Ana, Moira, and Mercy, and low healing supports like Zenyatta, Lucio, Brigitte, and Kiriko.

@@azure5644 Disagree. Supports are ill-defined as healers, and identifying them by their healing output endorses the 'healer' narrative.
Besides that point, healing output is a poor metric for support performance anyway. I'd argue that low Elo supports don't struggle with healing; they struggle with identifying and taking advantage of situations where healing isn't necessary.

Honestly it would be great if videos like this one became an integrated part of the Overwatch game, like an extension of the "introduction / tutorial" section of the game, they could have segment called "community tips and tricks" or something like that, where valued community members could have their content reviewed and posted on the site. It would do so much good for new players to have these resources readily available.

Great video. However the Main- and Flex/off-Support is a term that got used in coordinated teams and originated from the early days of Overwatch, before there was a role lock. In this times there was a main support who mainly played support and a flexible player that could also play for example Damage. Nowadays you are right, the community understands it more as you mentioned.

The definition of Main and Flex Support seems to differ based on who u ask (some can say it's an outdated or not needed term in OW2) .
Some say : the mechanically demanding Supports are flex and the others are main .
Others say Supports that can pressure the opponents with high dmg and strong CD are Flex and the others that enable the team are Main Supports .
Others say , the main Support is the one u pick around ur Tank and DPS picks , to enable ur strategy (like a Lucio with Rein) , and the second Support is the Flex , and the Flex Support player can change based on the situation.

    • @WhatisaLee
      @WhatisaLee Год назад

If you take the origin of the term to be correct, then what SVB stated is the only correct definition of main/flex support. As he put it, they are terms defined by the pro meta. Any further explanation of those terms are justifications in hindsight of why certain characters belong in one category or the other.
As for its relevance, it seems that a lot of what makes a main/flex support has carried over from OW1 to OW2 based on the metas developing in pro play. And pro support players are still categorized by their main/flex hero pools.

even as someone who has been playing overwatch for years and knew all of the terms, I really liked this video! Especially the main/flex support explanation since those terms kind of lost their meanings by now, with people using main heal/off heal more as it has a clearer meaning. Really interested in the next videos of the overwatch dictionary!

    two suggestions:
i wish you had pointed out that there are multiple spawn doors, so if a team is spawn-camping then they should be aware that they should watch more than one door. and also that the people in spawn should be aware that they have more than the one main exit.
i wish you had mentioned that (to my knowledge) main support does not mean "main healer" or "the support player that should be heal-botting", as i think some people the idea that that's what a "main support's" job is. (and that's incorrect, right?)

This is such a valuable resource! Thanks a lot SVB. Honestly you're easily one of the most valuable people in this community.
Not only is this very informative for beginners, but I think many intermediate players could also learn at least something from it.
I think this stuff should really be taught by the game itself, or by the developers, but thankfully we have people like you to take up the task of teaching this relatively complex game.

I think one point of clarity for the community regarding the last point, is when people misuse the main and flex support terms. Usually it will get called out as main and off heals, which just means which support is providing the most healing, and which is providing the extra 'benefits'.
Like during the last weeks of OW1, Brig and Zen were the meta healers for high ranked play, but in lower ranks, they were both 'off heals' and wouldn't work as a combo. While having two 'main heals' also wasn't great because you lacked the utility of the others.
