  • Downy Woodpecker vs. Hairy Woodpecker can be a tricky ID when only seeing one of these species alone. Thankfully, there are multiple ID features that you can use to tell these two species apart.

I get Red Belly and Downies at my feeders. Absolutely beautiful birds.

What a great video! I always look for the bill size when IDing..but never noticed the black comma and the speckled outer tail feathers..I'll have to be on the look out for these too!
    Keep up the great work

Thank you so much! I've been using bill size, but the comma tip is really helpful!

I literally figured out I had a hairy as well as downies just today, with the distinctive call and longer beak. I thought they were all downies for a while.

Thank you! 🤔🧐 Now I’m questioning myself as to what I’ve thought was the Downey the majority of the time. 😁 I guess have my next mission to complete out my kitchen window!

I had both at my feeders in the past so it always pays to check :)

We have both at the house here year round. The hairys won’t come by if I am outside but the downys will freely come by unless I am standing right by the feeder.

Thanks for the ID tips! I also h also have a hard time telling the red-cockaded woodpecker from those two. Their range is far more limited than the downy and hairy woodpeckers, but we have them in some parts of the South. They seem to be in between the size of the downy and hairy and the red section on the head is smaller, but it’s hard when you don’t have the other birds nearby for comparison!

Interesting! On the Red-cockaded definitely look for the large white cheek patch which the Downy and Hairy won't have (theirs will be striped). Also, the Red-cockaded should be in more specific pine habitat.

Can you please do another warbler watch video like you did last year? That was one of my favorites.

I know the audio works well and sounds clear on this video. Are you sure it wasn’t something with your headphones or computer?
