The building stands on the remains of two paleo-Christian churches destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1117
After this event, the Cathedral was rebuilt in a magnificent Roman style and officially dedicated to Santa Maria Matricolare, a tribute to Our Lady as Mother of the Church
The name "Matricolare" comes from the Latin words "MATER EKLESIE (Mater Ecclesiae)," meaning "Mother of the Church."
