My grandpa gave me his favorite rifle before he passed. His .270 Win. I love it! But he also extensively used his 30-06. He gave that to someone else. The .30-06 will be my next buy.
I had a friend I hand loaded his 30-06 & 300 Wby ammo. He booked a Alaska Moose, Bear & Sheep Hunt with an Outfitter. 1st think the Indian Guide had him do was shoot both Rifles at 100yds . Then the Guide told him to use the 30-06 not the 300 Wby because he shoot it without Flinching. He thought he would be under gunned. Got all of his animal's with 1 shot kills.
Yep 👍 I agree with the .30-06 king of cartridges , I’ll always have this one and it’s usually my GoTo rifle with 165 grain Nosler Partitions, although the .308 and .270 are good choices as well . But the aught six is just so versatile and manageable to shoot.
Somehow I have managed to eat venison since 1980 without using any of those "must own" cartridges. There are 40 or more cartridges that will reliably kill deer of any size or genus under 300 yards with proper shot placement and a good bullet choice. Deer haven't changed in 10,000 years but some cartridges last just a few years. Marketing hype.
I basically agree with your overall selections. I love the .30-06 and have 7 rifles chambered in it. I really enjoy the fact that there is a wide range of bullets weights handled by this one caliber, that ammo is readily available, and recoil is not punishing. I will also note that and recognize the .375 H&H Magnum as more practical and effective over the .45-70 and would rank higher than the .45-70. Thanks for the good review.
I have two .308s and I love them. I also agree that this is one of the best rounds to use for cost, efficiency and accuracy in normal range for most deer hunters or antelope hunters.
@HenryAllen-z4n My hunting group only hunts moose here in Canada. We use 270, 308 and 300WM. All 3 will efficiently do their part if the hunter does his.
The only gun I currently have chambered in .30-06 is an old Remington 760 Gamemaster pump. I installed a synthetic model 870 pump shotgun thumbhole stock and fore end. The only part I had to modify was the fore end by adding a slot to clear the 760's magazine. Works great and gives the gun a more modern and functional appearance.
I love my Winchester, 300 Magnum and I’m in my late 70s and I’ve had this gun since a very young age. Personally I love this gun and I’ve never had any trouble with it. I will say it’s got a significant kick on it but I’ve just learned how to totally ignore that although my right arm is a little sore at times 🤣🤣🤣. To each his own.
I have two hunting rigs. A CVA 50 cal muzzle loader and a Weatherby Vanguard 30 06. There is no game in North America that a 30 06 cannot harvest. It is the king and will always be. Free country so pick whatever cartridge works best for you, but I will never be without my 30 06
I also use my .300 WinMag with 180gr. Nosler Partitions or Accubond and Remington Core-Lokt Tipped 180gr. when I'm in an area where 300 yard + shots are required. Great bullets. Actually it's my preference for Moose or Elk and a comfort in Bear woods.
I agree with your ranking and selections with the exception of 1 round. I think this should be replaced by the 7mm Rem Mag due to it's effectiveness, power, availability, price point, and ability to take everything including moose. Might be light for brown bears or grizzly but effective for most large game. My 2 cents, next!
I have kept my 1903 Springfield that I paid $7,00 dollars in an war surplus store in 1964. If taken down mule deer with it and shot it with the original barrel dated 1906 yes even with todays modern loads though I’m not supposed to because people have told me the chamber Will explode. I was a small arms repairman in the marine corps and heard the stories about the history. Yes some did explode when being tested to see how much the chamber will take. Has anyone ever known one to explode NO. But I want you to know hunting ammo KICKS like a mule in such a light rifle and the bbl still has good rifling and glass smooth action. Those were good days you could find war surplus everything and have background checks or waiting periods.
For many years, 25-30, I only had and carryied Mauser M98 in 30-06 springfield. Never needed anything else. That gun has had two barrell-changes, I am on the third barrel now, and is still working like "all is fine and dandy". The action is from 1937 and had the german infintry stamp on the first barell i shot out. It is retired now and sits in the gun-locker ready for action but I use blaser r8 now in 308 win and 9,3x62:) But now, if I had to go with just one cartridge I would choose 280 ai. I think that would be it.Greetings
Hats of to you sir ,all great calibers I'm sure ,having owned and hunted with most of em but I,will say that bullet placement and not cal. Or bullet the ultimate factor. I have successfully hunted and, taken big game...Moose...caribou and the likes with many caliber - rifle combinations, and it always boils down to bullet placement. By the way ir for me personally, the 243win and the.300 win mag are a d,will always be my favorites. Now that's just my personal take on things. To each his own. Good hunting and God bless all you hunters and shooters out there. Keep em coming. Hold steady and squeeze er off.
I have three number one rifles. One is the 308 Ruger American and a 30 Ott six Winchester model 7o pre-64 and I found this rifle with the Woodstock itself was burnt, but they put a polymer stock on the hardware and I got it for $400 the second one or third one is a a 6.5 Creedmoor and a270 Glenfield 20 inch barrel. I love them all these guns the 30 06 is the number one now.
I didn't learn anything from your video, but I don't think you're way off on your choices. Sure, you could have included the. 243 Win., but as a matter of fact, the 6.5 Creed can do more and it is outrageously popular these days.
Good morning Sir. I'm running a Marlin 1895G with Barnes TSX FN FB 300gr all copper HPs with a Muzzle Velocity of 2,200 fps. I'd still not take game over 100 yards. I've never had a Hog or Whitetail take a single step after impact. Semper Fi!
My first rifle was a world War 1 bolt action 30/06,those flip up sites ,those army surplus stores with army ammo, they are not around any more.in the 60s when I was a kid, then I got another one from a old farmer,,he knew I hunted and offered it to me ,heck yes I'll take it off your hands like a world War 2 one, with a custom stock, then a couple years later 😀 at 17 I bought a brand new browning automatic, not full 😀 30/06,nice Gun all open sites ❤😊
I very much enjoyed your video. Early on I have harvested several quality bucks with a .3006 without very much tracking. As I have become older I prefer the .308 as it has a little less recoil. I have recently purchased a 6.5 CM as the modern .243 for my grandchildren to learn on. There are many good calibers and loads that can work well but IMHO the .308 and .3006 are just time and tried choices that will be hard to replace. Good luck to all for what ever your choice.
I agree with the 30-06 , I've got the old Belgian Mouser . Been shooting it for 38 years , no trouble . I did put a medium slip on kick pad on it , so much sweeter to shoot in my older years lol .
Regardless of WHATEVER is Said by the BIGGEST NAME ever held a RIFLE.... The 30-06 has TRIED & PROVEN that it is KING!!!!! & That's including WHATEVER new Caliber comes about in the Future
I agree on 30 - 06 being number 1. I have shot 30-06 more yers than I can count Had 300 Weatherby Magnum was great but way too explicit to shoot regret selling it but it is what it is. I like the 243 but it has his limitations looking to get AR 10 to 308. I like that round. Use it a lot when I was an army.
Mk V deluxe sat in my safe after purchase for several years. Finally ordered dies and got a steal of 3 boxes of 338 Weatherby magnum brass, sized some down to 300. Boresighted and went to the range with 168’s on top a bunch of H4350. 100 yards first ever 3 shots bullseye-one ragged hole. I didn’t know what I had all along. It is awesome
That's what I use for varmits, deer sized game plus elk, my son uses a 260 Remington also with equal performance. Others would be a 257 Roberts, 7mm08 Remington, 270, 280 or 3006 .
.280(neck down 30.06) or 30.06 will harvest anything that walks, swims, or crawls in the lower 48, rest of this is marketing. So many of these cartridges are the bastard children of the 30.06.
338 Lapua!!! then, .300 PRC and 7MM PRC For Big game, the .300 win mag is the all arounder but its dated and just not the same as the new kids on the block, just like the 30-06 for the medium size game. 6.5 PRC, 6.5 Creedmoor, the .270 and any 6MM for the most part up to 1000yds+ the 243 for less than 600yrds and then .308 under 300yds and 30-06 is a true nostalgic king among kings but not so popular with the average enthusiast today, but sure why not from 100-700yds ok fine, whatever. If the .308 came out in 1900, and the 30-06 in 1947, we'd be saying the .308 is king here. It can be said the .308 is the most efficient, inherently accurate cartridge design ever made. It's is the modern day re-loader's high power cartridge of choice.

I've always loved the 30-06 it's drops anything u hit

2 .308s, .270, 30'06 and 30'06 gets the nod all day, every day. Yes, recoil is up there, but I like recoil. Let's you feel the bang! 😂
I stay with my 30.06. Second to this round the 7 mm Mauser.
45-70 doesn’t come to mind when you brought up recoil sensitivity.
I have two hunting rigs. A CVA 50 cal muzzle loader and a Weatherby Vanguard 30 06. There is no game in North America that a 30 06 cannot harvest. It is the king and will always be. Free country so pick whatever cartridge works best for you, but I will never be without my 30 06

.300 win mag. Is great. But everything that needs to be done in North America the .30-06 could do it !
Thank you this was all helpful!

My 300 Weatherby is the single rifle I would keep. Mine is exceptional.
30-06! The king!
A 308 Win Mac is ,and still the best riffle for me.❤
.30-06 165 grain Nosler Partition
Agreed sir. 30 cal. 1906

I own what I think is the best cartridge and that is the 300 WSM In a lighter, short action rifle.
I agree with the 30-06 , I've got the old Belgian Mouser . Been shooting it for 38 years , no trouble . I did put a medium slip on kick pad on it , so much sweeter to shoot in my older years lol .
That's kinda big for shooting a mouse! (Sorry, just kidding.) I totally agree with your point.

Je crois que tu as raison 👍

It works good with 55 gr bullet the 3006
How many times has the 6.5 creedmore round proven on the battlefield?
Winchester model 70 in 30.06
If you don’t care about recoil then I’d pick a 7 RUM or 7 MM Nosler and a 195 Grain Berger Bullet.
Number 7 should be Number one, with level 2 or higher right rifles things a tank and im talking beyond lever gun those will not handle level 3
What are your thoughts on 300 PRC,?
My two sons, three grandsons and a grand-daughter all have 25-06's.
To victortracy wish winchester would bring back the model 100
Agree
je chasse avec le 308 W avec une carabine Kipplauf chasser avec un 30-O6 c'est la même chose !!!!
25 -06 have it for 25 years can run with the pack
That's what I use for varmits, deer sized game plus elk, my son uses a 260 Remington also with equal performance. Others would be a 257 Roberts, 7mm08 Remington, 270, 280 or 3006 .
I will never buy a cartridge that has prc, legend, or creedmore (crapmore) attached to its name
100%
.280(neck down 30.06) or 30.06 will harvest anything that walks, swims, or crawls in the lower 48, rest of this is marketing. So many of these cartridges are the bastard children of the 30.06.
The 30/06 is king in my family.

et le 9,3 74 R c'est le meilleur pour la france en battue ou a 150 m
30-06 yes, I grew up with it, watch the PRC snobs cry about this, I would have put the 270 win at number 3 or 2
30.06 Nothing better
7mm PRC is a glorified 280 they’re trying to rebirth! It’s a dog!
Marketing to boost sales
All the creeds and prc cartridges don’t belong on this list
