Episode 31: Rana Sanga, Ibrahim Lodi and Babur

As Nehru observes, while Vijaynagar was flourishing in the south and the petty sultanates reigned in Delhi in the 14th and 15th centuries, there were individual strongholds of Orissa, Bengal and Awadh in the east, and Gujarat, Malwa and Rajasthan in the west. In the and Babur north, however, the Turkish, Afghan and Moghul conquests resulted in rapid development of India’s contacts with Central and Western Asia. Babur, a prince of the Timurind line, established himself on the throne of Delhi in 1526 and his frank diary Babur-Nama remains a graphic guide to his tempestuous times in India.
Under Rana Kumbha of Mewar, the great plateau of capital Chittor was fortified. Drawing upon James Tod’s Annal and Antiquities of Rajasthan, the curtain opens on Mewar where the princes Prithviraj, Jaimal and Sangram Singha (later Rana Sanga), sons of King Raimal, are seen heading for a remote-dwelling Yogin to foretell their royal destiny. With the prophecy favouring Rana Sanga, the braggart Prithviraj eliminates Jaimal and attacks and injures Rana Sanga. Prithviraj is consequently banished from the kingdom, yielding the throne to Rana Sanga. Even with a single hand and a single leg, Rana Sanga is fiercely patriotic and contemplates power beyond Ibrahim Lodi in Delhi by inviting Babur.
Babur, on receiving the missive from Rana Sanga, launches his successful bid in 1525 with a highly mobile force and with the new gunpowder technology. There have been terminal rivalries after the death of the powerful king Sikander Lodi, amidst his son and successor Ibrahim Lodi in Delhi and his sibling in Jaunpur. In 1526, Babur’s army meets Ibrahim Lodi’s troops with the latter’s advantage of 10:1 at Panipat and wins through a superior strategy by attacking on the two flanks as well as from behind, turning the enemy’s bulk into his disadvantage.
Rana Sanga, who had encouraged Babur to invade, simply hoped for a Lodi rout and then a Mughal withdrawal, leaving the coast clear for his own ambitions. As the song of Guru Nanak conveys, Babur’s final coming to India was a matter of moral degradation for India. He moves out to give battle, amidst unfavourable soothsaying, defection of forts and a desertion of Indian recruits. He turns on the Rajputs, though much superior in number, at Khanua and has a fiercely-contested fight, relying, on semi-fortified arrangement of ditches and chained carts interspersed with artillery and matchlock-men. According to Tod’s Annals, defeat results from treachery, making Sanga retreat and leaving the Mughals supreme in the heartland of North India.
After winning his spurs at Panipat and Khanua, Babur sends Humayun, his favourite eldest son and designated heir, to Afghanistan. When told that Humayun is ill, he offers his own life and takes to bed, never to get up again. He is buried in his favourite garden in Kabul.

The general who took up the crown and lead the Army when rana ji was unconscious due to that arrow hit during mid battle is Ajjaji, he laid down his life to protect Rana Sanga ji and his descendant Jhala maan singh did the same for Maharana Pratap in battle of haldighati by taking his place!! @@solankiparesh1345 आप इसको इस अवधारणा से देखे की उस समय भारत एक राज्यों का संघ नही था, छोटी बड़ी रियासते थी , जिनके शासक अपने राज्यों के विस्तार एवम सुरक्षा के लिए आपस में लड़ते थे। तो उस समय वो लोग समग्र भारत की सोच नही रख कर केवल अपने राज्य के बारे में सोचते होंगे, ये भी हो सकता है की राणा सांगा को अपने राज्य के लिए जो अच्छा लगा वो उन्होंने किया। तो अब आज की स्थिति में उसको गलत या सही ठहराना न्यायपूर्ण नही होगा।

Rana Sanga was brave warrior because even after Khanwa he was preparing himself for another war, he fought more pitched battle's then Babar and he had many wounds, he lost his one eye and one hand even after that he was leading a huge army of many chieftain's, Mughal courtier Ferishta called him as "Bravest of all Rajputs after Prathviraj Chauhan"
When Babar was preparing attack on Medini Rai after Khanwa, Rana Sanga prepared his army and matched towards Babar, but unfortunately he was poisoned by his own general's (many suspected them as men's of Babar)
I am pretty sure that if he hadn't poisioned, he would have defeated Babar just like he defeated him in Bayana, he was men of high moral, also he was the inspiration of his grandson great Maharana Pratap

1. Babur do some nasty tactics , esrlier two men used to fight in battlefield wirh same ammo and no one will maddle un vetween until unless one die !! But babur ordered as when two men fight he introduce "uluguma padhati" in which the third person would attack enemy from back side thus the traditional indian soldiers got baffled by this as it was below the blet but it was late foe them to react !!
2. Babur used canon and it was the first time that inidan seen this machine who fires out ammo and fire as well and this lead to a fear among them.
These 2 were the main and solid reason why sanga lost unless babur never had the army as well as courage to ffce the great rana sanga !!

These are all vanilla ice cream versions of history. Some gutsy film maker should make the reality of these medieval wars. After the battle of Panipat and khanwa, babur made small hills of all the heads of the fallen warriors.

Sanga unified several Rajput clans for the first time after Prithviraj Chauhan and advanced on Babur with a grand coalition of 100,000 Rajputs. However, Sanga suffered a major defeat in the Battle of Khanwa due to Babur's skillful positioning of troops and modern tactics and firepower. The Battle of Khanua was one of the most decisive battles in Indian history, more so than the First Battle of Panipat, as the defeat of Rana Sanga was a watershed event in the Mughal conquest of northern India.

It was a stalemate at Khanwa. Babur in Baburnama states that he wet his pants on way from Delhi to Agra due to fear of Rana Sanga's army. Rana Sanga commanded 2,00,000 and Babur 80,000 in Khanwa, but Babur had cannons which were new to Indian warfare and hence the stalemate, no one won.

The Indian style of warfare proved to be obsolete in the face of the newly discovered techniques of warfare. The Mongols taught the use of gunpowder and firearms to the rest of the world, and the Mughals came to India with the latest training. At that time, no such technique was known to the Indians and as a result, they couldn't tackle the massive onslaught of the Mughals. Similarly, when the Europeans came to India (British, French, Portuguese etc.), they brought with them new techniques of warfare, mainly naval warfare. They knew navigation well because they were involved in the quest for the 'New World'. And by that time, the Europeans had developed modern weapons and well-equipped standing armies, because they had to engage in constant battles with each other. They brought those elements here in India and other places, to defend their trade and commercial interests.
The Mughals, weakened by the time the British and French were trying to consolidate themselves in India, couldn't catch up with them due to their lack of naval preparedness. The Mughals never thought of raising a naval force for defending their boundaries, whereas the Europeans, especially the British, had a firm control over the sea and could get the assistance from their homeland in need.
What Nehru has tried to show is that, it is necessary to change with time as the world is transient. You have to closely follow your environment and what is happening outside your land.
