I thought they were going to bring in a younger character to keep the franchise going like Rocky did with Creed. I agree though, not great, but I enjoyed it for what it was. Love Serge!
So. First an admission. I broke the cardinal rule and judged Axel F without first seeing it. I did this because I haven’t gotten over my upset of what Tom Cruise did to the character of Maverick in the so-called sequel. Top Gun Maverick is only a sequel in the mind of Tom Cruise, he changed the character unrecognisably to me - the 2022 offering is not a triumphant evolution of the 1986 character. Tom missed the guiding hand of Tony Scott (RIP) and Tom Skerritt and instead produced an ego driven testimony to himself not the character, partly evidenced by Kelly McGillis’ inexcusable absence. Upon watching Axel F I find myself truly overjoyed that no one understood the character better than Eddie Murphy - and thanks to expertly pitched (and placed) scoring the guiding hands of Brest, Scott and Faltermeyer are very present. Ashton and Reinhold resumed their characters without missing a beat - and joyfully so. Their undeniable chemistry alive and kicking. Reiser and Pinchot once again steal every scene they’re in. Bacon and Gordon-Levitt were brilliantly cast and surely Taylour Paige has an enormous future. So. Max I’m with you, and the fan spotlight reviewer. Axel F is a triumph, and should be celebrated as such. Mo I expect better of you since I too uphold Beverly Hills Cop 1&2 as undeniable classics, and part 3 as truly dreadful. As a sporting man you’ll understand when I say you’ve dropped the ball here. Hopefully on repeated viewings you’ll realise you’ve underestimated Axel F. Sorry brother. Bravo Eddie Murphy. Welcome back Axel Foley
