  • A collaboration between visual artist and Artificial Life researcher Jeffrey Ventrella and AI researcher and composer Jean-Claude Heudin. Both the video and the music are created using bio-inspired algorithms showing the emergence of life-like forms.
    « Evolved Cellular Automata » by Jeffrey Ventrella:
    The evolved cellular automata is a grid of cells. At each time step, each cell applies a transition rule to update its state based on its local neighborhood of cell states. Evolved CA refers to the application of a genetic algorithm to evolve the transition rule. A genetic algorithm is a stochastic search method inspired by the Darwinian model of evolution. A population of candidate solutions is evolved by reproduction with variation, followed by selection, for a number of generations.

    « Hypercycle » by Angelia:
    The name « Hypercycle » is a reference to the Origin of Life theory by Nobel Prize Manfred Eigen, further extended in collaboration with Peter Schuster. The hypercycle is a cycle of connected, self-replicating macromolecules, where all molecules are linked such that each of them catalyses the creation of its successor, with the last molecule catalysing the first one.
    The musical interpretation of a hypercycle is a « loop of loops », where each loop is based on the same sequence, with increasing mutations over time and a return to the initial form in order to start a new cycle. It is generated using Angelia’s Biomorpher: a fractal growth algorithm inspired by Aristid Lindemayer’s L-Systems. It takes an initial melodic seed and grows a tree of variants using some mutations at each branch. The seed used is a sequence of 16 notes inspired by the main ostinato of Franz Liszt’s Concert Etude No. 3. Angelia is connected to a modular sampler synthesizer playing five voices with sounddesign made using the Digital D1 synthesizer.

    Please like and subscribe, if you liked the music as it really helps the channel grow and videos get recommended. RUclips is tough for artists with views on a steady decline and content not getting pushed or recommended like it could be.

    sounds great, it's funny because I have developed the same kind of algorithms, with drifting sequences applying random mutations and sometimes coming back to the original sequence , to create a kind of living musical creature

    Life is a house of cards hurling itself down a slope, frantically building more of itself to keep collapsing forever.

      @@Teth47 Not very optimistic but nicely said. Life is negentropy at the edge of order and chaos. 🙏

      @@jcheudin It's the most honest take on it I've been able to come up with lol. It's not optimistic but it does mean we can keep going. Maybe there's something at the bottom of the slope. Maybe there's a whole other slope, maybe we can make a landing for ourselves, who knows?
      We're going somewhere, at least.

    which rule is this?

      @jcheudin  Месяц назад +1

      @@triangleunderstander the rule is evolved by applying a genetic algorithm. You might ask to Jeffrey Ventrella if you want to know more about the cellular automata he used.
