The market for a $50,000 used sports car is wide and full of options. Thomas and James are excited to bring together 5 options for potential buyers and discuss their favourites. From the ultra-lightweight carbon fibre infused Alfa Romeo 4C, to the highly depreciated and highly raucous Jaguar F-Type R, choices abound in this price bracket. Perhaps a concept-car come to life like the BMW i8 is your flavour? Or if it’s displacement you’re after, the C7 Corvette offers plenty. And if you bend your wallet just a bit more over $50k, perhaps a Voodoo engined Mustang GT350 would suit your needs - and your ears. Which would you choose? We hope you enjoy the episode. Subscribe!

Great Vid Boys. Regarding the Comment "The F-Type R is better on the overun" than the GT350 - It's not well known but the GT350 engineers left some engine tuning magic to make the Voodoo absolutely bang. The trick is this: Be heavy throttle in the mid range from approx 3-6k RPM. Next, don't shift or clutch but get off the gas suddenly but maintain ~10-15% throttle. This will allow some fuel to be dumped in and will create the best flatplane machine gun sounds on a stock exhaust/tune car ever! Ford Engineers knew about this and left it in. Love it.
Nothing but annoying punk BS IMHO
So true.....I love doing it in 2nd and 3rd gears....it is magical

@stx6671 shorter than a straight 6, yeah, but there's no way it could be shorter than a v6.
It's crazy to think that in America the Alfa 4C is so much cheaper. In Europe it's at least 75k. Good ones sell for 90k

That’s initial cost. You have to add in dealership repairs as no one wants to work on them. Then add depreciation on top of that.
They barely sold at that price, if it was any more expensive it wouldn’t have sold at all.
@@javierbadillo2317 in Europe they're seen as a more desirable car. In America it's just another small weird Italian thing. Plus i think that here in Europe we got more special editions. It's gotten to the point where they're actually somewhat appreciating in value

Two and a half years ago, I was literally the target audience for this video. I was looking for a 2-door sports car and had a budget of $50-60k. I literally had on my short list three of the five cars you guys tested: the C7 Vette, the F-Type R, and the GT350. Here's why I passed on each one of them.
1) The C7 was just "too sporty" for me. It was too low to the ground, had too tight of a cockpit, and didn't have a dedicated trunk. I wanted more of a "grand touring" car, and less of a true "sports" car.
2) The F-Type R wasn't available with a manual transmission. That was a huge buzzkill. A manual was Priority 1 while shopping for my next car. Otherwise, it looked amazing, sounded amazing, and had a very comfortable cockpit. No separate trunk, but I was so smitten with its looks that I didn't care. Jaguar long-term reliability was also a concern however.
3) I was REALLY close to getting a GT350. Having owned a 2015 GT in the past, I was partial to the Mustang. However, I would only have bought a 2019 or 2020 model due to the changes Ford made to the Voodoo engine and oil system after 2018. Unfortunately, every GT350 from those two model years I found within a few hundred miles of me with less than 10k miles also had an asking price north of $65k and even $70k. I could have easily bought a 2016 or 2017, but worried so much about the engine issues that I couldn't pull the trigger.
So after all that, I eventually ended up buying a 2022 Mustang Mach 1. It had just 700 miles on it during my test drive, so I saved a bundle over buying new. It had the reliability and sound of the Coyote V8, and the buttery-smooth Tremec transmission from the Shelby. Add in the digital gauge cluster, rev-matching, and all the parts from the GT350 and GT500, and it was the perfect car for me in the end. I paid $57k for it (MSRP was $63k), and after two years and 15,000 miles later, I could still sell it for around $50k today no problem. Sure, the GT350 has the Voodoo engine and you get to be part of the "Shelby club" and all that, but I love every minute I spend behind the wheel of the Mach 1. No regrets whatsoever.
The Mach 1 is an absolute gem. Sure it doesn't rev to the moon, but the voodoos are known to have some problems. It's all the same goodies but with that absolutely beautiful Coyote that is arguably the best V8s on sale. Great choice!
i can agree with your assessment, if you need a car that you will live with... the Mustang is definitely a good option especially with the manual transmission.
Personally I would go with a Cadillac or go find the car that I already own (2017 Chevy SS Sedan) as it checks all the boxes and then some. I put a procharger on mine and it makes 700HP now.... so truly checks every box in terms of performance, reliability and smiles per mile.
Hell yeah. I'm an F-body guy, so staunchly anti-Mustang, but this is a great comment. I'm glad you found a car that works for you. At the end of that day, that's what it's all about. And I love the strategy of getting the option with the slightly less exotic motor for overall reliability. I do that same thing.
I too was considering a sportscar in the 50K range last year. I considered Japanese, European and American models and in the end, a 2022 Mach 1 offered the best overall package. I too considered a GT 350 but reliability concerns made it a no go. And funny enough the Mach 1 i got was a special order with the options I really wanted and in top of it all, it was ordered on my birthday! It wad meant to be.
28:25 I worked at a corvette dealership and had a customer bring back their car 3 days after buying. It had been backed into something and he claimed it happened at the dealership. We told him we’d take a look at it in our body shop, I went to pull it in and there was a breathalyzer in the cupholder. The owner stopped me, reached in and pressed the screen drop button, grabbed the ~1oz of weed, rolling papers, and an auto roller out, closed up the screen and told me I was good to take the car to the body shop.
It was the Alfa 4c for me. It makes me laugh every time I get in it. Then whenever I’m in the mood to hit the twisties it keeps me on my toes and makes me sweat in all the best ways possible.

@@nigel.w for me its Poland and roads in the city are even worse for such car. There isn't even a proper track to have some fun with it. I've driven an SVR F-Type as well as the GT350 and C7 Stingray. While they're all great cars, it's hard to beat the specialness of the GT350 as a driving experience. That engine and transmission combo is just sublime.
As a recent owner of a GT350, I echo your sentiment about it.
The GT350 absolutely sounds like the second coming, and while I love it for that engine, mustangs are a dime a dozen. Even if that one is super special. I would hate to see myself coming and going.

That I8 is still just eye candy even after all this years!!!🥳🔥
It just so happens that I picked up a 2019 GT350 about 2 months ago. I was intent on getting a 2019 or 2020, because those got the gen 2 engine (block from the 500) along with a slew of other tweaks and upgrades that really blurt the lines between the base and the R. I couldn’t be happier with my choice, the car has the same characteristics (incredible engine, transmission and balanced chassis) and delivers a pretty similar driving experience as my AP2 S2000 albeit with way more power off course. The GT350 is just such a special car.
All that said, thank you team TH for another fantastic video! That add was just the cherry on top 😂 That image of Thomas is already living rent free in my head 😂😂
I just swapped my s2k for a 2017 gt350r. Best swap in my life. Loved the s2k on backroads but i think thats even more fun .
'17 GT350 owner here as well. The engine and transmission are too good to ignore, and its a car you can live with daily for summer duty. Mine also sees track duty, and is shockingly good. I just wish we had the option to go down to an 18" wheel.
I consider your garage to be a 1:1 upgrade of mine: 2019 PP2 Mustang and an NB Miata.😅
I also came from an S2000 to a GT350. Same general idea. No car comes anywhere near competing with it under 70k
I sold my 2019 GT350 a couple of months ago for 2025 BMW X4M Competition for practicality reasons. I have enjoyed driving GT350 for 5 years.
Aside from all the great banter between James and Thomas, I love their differences as car enthusiasts when it comes to what they would or have owned. Thomas is the more typical enthusiast who is all about a more pure, manual RWD car-whereas James (much like myself) will welcome good autos and AWDs for all the benefits they bring.
I’ve owned both the i8 and the 4C, so I can speak from experience. The i8 definitely turns heads and is a lot of fun in a straight line. However, it didn’t feel that exciting in the corners. Before tuning, it felt a bit too predictable-like an electric car, it responded the same way every time you hit the throttle. After getting it tuned and adding a custom turbo-back exhaust, the car really came alive, and I started enjoying it much more.
But the car I loved the most is the 4C. It was raw, loud, and razor-sharp in its handling. People even mistook it for a Ferrari at times. Out of everything I’ve owned, the 4C is still my favorite. I can’t wait to get another one. It was so responsive and always put a huge smile on my face. It just felt truly special-unlike anything else on the road.
I'm in the process of buying one. I actually test drove the one from this same video. It was so fun, and it turned heads like crazy.
Felt very special to sit in, start, drive.
Like a Ferrari had a baby with a Motorbike. That's the 4C.
@@EbNorthone thing to consider on the 4C is it is tough to park and move at low speeds like in a parking lot or reversing. if you can get over the manual steering this is an amazingly fun car to own. I daily mine for 8 months straight. Loved every second of it.

Had my 4C since release.. I know it may sound silly, but after you add the aftermarket suspension alignment blocks and adjustable sway bars, the few flaws it had out of the factory are gone. Still enjoying mine as a daily driver.
The 4Cs awful NVH can become tiring very quickly.

I have always loved the I8. The fact you can get one for around 50k now still seems crazy to me.
I've owned both an F-Type V6 and an AWD F-Type R. The F-Type R is one of the best cars I've ever owned. Insane grip, engine sounds otherworldly, crazy speed. I don't think you can get a better deal in the price range. If you can't afford the V8, the V6 gives you like 90% of the drama for even less money. Plus they were both dead reliable. Both had about 100k km and needed very little upkeep.
The v6 at least in my country r so cheap. Definitely one of the best bank for buck fun cars now.
I wish they have wider wheels and tires from the factory for more aggressive look.

Hows the reliability on the F type R? RUclipsr Effspot had one back in the day and it was constantly in the shop
I recently picked up a base V6 to use as a daily driver. Best decision I could have made. They're dirt cheap, even for well maintained examples. I'll probably end up picking up an SVR at some point in the near future.
Die-hard Corvette guy here, but I gave all four a fair shake.
The F-Type is, hands down, one of the most beautiful modern designs out there. I’d take it over anything coming out of Italy today, no question. If only Jag had given it a proper 3-pedal manual!
But here’s the thing. Once you get behind the wheel of a transaxle Corvette (C5-C7) and feel what these cars can do, it’ll ruin you. The driving experience is ridiculously capable for the money. Just a fair warning. Once you taste what a Vette can deliver, it’s game over. You will look past any interior shortcomings and have no issue upgrading to true bucket sports seats.
Great video as always!
Full-price as new, the value was a Euro-killer. Used, anything Italian you'd find for the money (above Alfa grade) is going to break your heart.
The supercharged V6 f types could be had with a manual but they’re exceptionally rare.
Not really. Owned a C6 for 7 years and traded it for an Alfa 4C. No regrets. Corvettes are great performance value for the money, but once you drive them on track at 10/10ths they lose their luster on the street.
@zefram47 Yeah, that makes sense. I've only done one track day. And I did not get it anywhere near 10/10ths. Hahaha. Maybe 6ish/10th...maybe. But afterwards, I found myself holding back as the road surface became a concern (2222 to Lime Creek Rd in the Austin area). Will the slightest undulation in the road send me into the ditch?
With regards to mid-engine, I have purposely refrained from test driving a 981 Cayman. I'm sure (in my case) bad finacial decision would ensue. Haha! Cheers!
I agree the manual corvette and shelby are miles ahead in experience
If the i8 was called M1, was ICE, with a NA V12 and MT, it would be one of the best cars ever and would still be built today.

The space I have in the hatch is nuts. Whenever I start thinking Im going to upgrade and look around its hard to find something comparable. I love that the Corvette is Targa so you pretty much have a convertible without the negatives of a convertible. You have 3 tops to choose from to enjoy (body colored top, carbon and clear. I also have the sports competition seats. White exterior and full Kalahari interior. I dont see ever selling because there's nothing in the market like it. I could get a Z06 but I dont really need the amount of power I would never really use. I could get the Grandsport but its just appearance thing and the tires would cost more for miniscule performance upgrade on the track only. I think Ill get an S2000 and keep the Vette. What a combo that would be.
Getting this specific with corvette spec in a YT comment is exactly the stereotypical corvette owner lmao. Jokes aside glad you love it, I considered C7Z but went with ZL1 instead as I needed the tiny back seats believe it or not.
Been looking at both lately. Would like to have back seats but the vette just looks so much better. But great option either way.
Good breakdown on the C7 GS. Love the wide body but tires are ridiculously expensive. 2 years ago I bought my current 1999 C5 Hardtop with only 18k miles. My first corvette and I love it. Has 6 speed manual and standard Z51 suspension and it’s an amazing car. Will be keeping it at least 3 years or 4 max. Next up will be a 2017-19 Stingray Z51 manual. To me the ultimate front engine corvette
I'd take the GT350. Sounds great, lots of parts of availability, looks fantastic, and plenty of power.

The F-Type R is the car you go for if you want to have tons of fun without worrying about possibly killing yourself. Anyone that is considering buying one should just be prepared to have alot of strangers coming up to you asking about the car. 😉
The RWD F-Type R wants to kill you.
I purchased a 2014 C7 Stingray with the exact same spec as you guys have, its a 3LT Z51. I purchased in 2022 and it's literally the best car for the money, no one can tell me different. Those Ariel Atom turbo whooshes were chef kiss 🤌🏽
Two years ago I bought an FType R 2015, and yes, it's an RWD. The first few months were a learning curve, but it only made me love it more. If you want to learn how to drive a wild beast, it's the car for you.
7:37 funny enough it’s actually my birthday today 😂
🤣🤣
28:21 😂😂 I did not see Thomas’ response coming AT ALL. Woke up my wife laughing out loud 😂. You guys rock!
No idea I what happened after the QuadLock “commercial”… because I couldn’t stop laughing.
Got my ‘19 350r in the garage. 350 all day!
Awesome car! Have you ever driven any of the others compared here?
It’s in the garage because you’re afraid to drive it. Engine go 💣
@TML34 Are they known to explode? I heard they shake so much you have to be careful of loose hardware but that's it?
Don’t drive it, the engine will blow
@@Blas4ublasphemyFord had a lot of trouble with “secondary engine vibrations” because of the crankshaft design. It’s these vibrations that are believed to be the root cause of the documented issues.
I will admit though, the engine sounds glorious, until it doesn’t. 😅
6:50 has to be my favorite skit you guys have ever done! 😂😂😂😂
Throttle house is the only channel where i actually get excited for the sponsored scenes.
Well, I guess my decision was made a couple years ago when we picked up an i8 as my partner's car. I love the Jag myself, but it's hard to argue with the practicality (relatively) of the i8 with its rear seats, awd, and great city fuel economy, plus being rust-proof with the carbon chassis helps not worry about driving it in the canadian winter.
I bought an F-Type SVR 2 years ago. Absolutely love it. Lots of car for the money. The best in this group. You are right
17:18 I love that you specifically pick a shot that says "horses on road" and then dive into Mustang!
F type is so reliable it’s scary. I know it’s a Jag. But I have a 2107 SVR. All I have done is preventive maintenance. That’s it. Drive it hard and drive it almost daily. Zero issues it’s fast looks great and zero problems. Can’t ask for anything more
It’s crazy, that this video was uploaded a week after I just bought my new 2018 F-Type. I was also looking at the Corvette & GT350. Just like James I feel validated. Thanks you two!
Someone doesn't appreciate your Jag 😂12:02
I just spotted that’s as well. Who on earth is she and why is she doing that ?!?! Bizarre 😂
I currently own a 2019 C7 Stingray it is only a LT1, I live in Italy 🇮🇹and I wouldn’t own anything else. Corvette is always under estimated especially here in Europe but this is absolutely my favorite car I have ever owned. I get more looks, more photos driving this car it crazy best car by far!❤
Why not the 2013 Corvette Test Prototype?
Ma come fai a pagarti il superbollo con quella bestia??😂
Comunque io l'ho sempre adorata, secondo me la C7 (specialmente Stingray, la piu pulita) è la piu bella Corvette moderna, di gran lunga
@@Lupo45I don’t have to pay bollo because I work for the United States government.
Is it tricky owning such a long and wide car in Italy?
Granted that depends on which part I’m sure…but Rome, Florence, and along the Amalfi coast it seems like it would be miserable. Miata or 500 Abarth would be perfection around there.
I adore your country, hoping to go back and explore more areas.
Thomas did you like the cake? 😂😂😂 James hit you flush with it 😂😂😂
I just traded in my 24 M240i for a 19 GT350 and it’s the most fun I’ve had in a car in stock form
Huge downgrade
@@latino914😂 not even close to a downgrade. Some people like enjoy driving more than sitting in a plush interior. Gt350 is a way better and more engaging driver experience.
@@latino914240is have no character
@@cashmoneycockburn9502 maybe in your dreams. But not in real life kid
@@latino914 ....are you serious? Why are you even watching this channel?
I have a 16 Jag R Coupe. My only complaint is I’m not motivated to buy something newer…violating my historical buying patterns. It’s also been bulletproof. And it’s absolutely beautiful.
I have 2015 and have the same thoughts and experience
"I dont know any supercar with 3 cylinders..."
Koeniggsegg - Am I a joke to you....???
In terms of ownership cost, performance and looks, it's the c7 by a country mile. The LS is about as bulletproof of a motor as it gets, and you can find any part at a local AutoZone at a reasonable price and wrench yourself. Plus infinite aftermarket support to make it as fast or loud as you want. Have to remember that the cost of ownership for those other euros could approach 5 figures or more in the near future if something breaks.
Its such a fun car, beat the piss out of my Z51
Sadly this is the LT motor, which is still great, but I’d much prefer the LS6, which for me is the king of Chevy small blocks. Just about perfect in my very humble opinion.
That, and it’s the cheapest one on this list. I regularly find regular mileage C7s in the 30,000 range
@@clubracer6LS6? Surely you mean LS3?
@@deadlybladesmith3093exactly, you can get an LT2 GS with UNDER 25K miles for 55K easily, or spend maybe another 5-7k and get an entire Z06
I bought a 2018 GT350 last week. It has been my dream car since high school, and few things have come close to the emotions of that VooDoo V8. It's such a great car through and through, it's definitely a forever car for me.
Congratulations! I should be purchasing here in a month or so, very excited
I’m a huge Corvette guy through and through. Like Thomas said, the value is absolutely unmatched. With that said, I’m completely okay with them choosing the Jag. I love the first F-Type. It’s gorgeous and has a great powertrain. They nailed it.
Longer term the Corvette should be much more reliable. The F-Type's powertrains are poorly designed and are already very needy. Okay if you buy a relatively new one, preferably under warranty, and you don't plan on it being a keeper.
6:21 - OMG, I was NOT expecting that! Thx for the laughs, gents! I needed that this morning!!!!
4C is my choice, before even watching the video. An example of a relatively modern car that can never legally be manufactured anymore, just like the Lotus Elise. I hope I can get into one someday - it's likely the current owners will take good care of them for me.
I got a 2017 Jaguar F Type R in December 2024 with 18,000 miles. I traded in My 2017 Miata with 12,000 miles and thought I would regret it but I didn't. The F Type R is the best car I've ever owned.
F type - Purely for the way it sounds😮💨
Dodge Viper 1999 also sound great like F Type.
@@purwantiallan5089😂😂😂 no... jeezus , no. Viper sounds like a tractor engine
1. Mustang 350(more rare & unicorn track weapon)
2. Alfa Romeo (also not common & light weight so can be super fun)
3. f type (to be different and they fairly reliable. Still fun, aggressive and classy)
🤷🏾♂️ just my top choices
The Ariel Atom bit had me absolutely dying. You guys are pure gold!
Gotta go C7 easily
C7 More reliable and it’s value better then all the rest but I would like just to drive the jag here and there if someone else own it.
I think the battle between the C7 and the F-type gets settled when you take the car for service. The F-type has parts scarcity issues and higher costs. You can service a C7 almost anywhere.
Exactly…I’d choose the vette because I wouldn’t be afraid of ownership costs.
Vette to old man for me.. I’d take the Jag for rarity
Before I got my C7 Z51, I looked at the F-Type. The F-Type felt like I was a kid sitting in a bathtub because the windows were so high, and the cargo compartment is *tiny*. I wanted to want the Jaguar, but I couldn't. I've since put 70k+ miles on the Corvette, and still love it every time I drive it.
@@G82Wattsand the jag is not old man? Jaguar is literally an old man brand.
@@woodrmp1yeah but not the ftype or xkr
My friend used to own that GT350. Absolutely amazing car, crazy loud and so photogenic. So cool to see you guys using it in a video!
That is quite possibly the best skit y'all have done yet!
Of the options in the video, i would choose the GT 350. Cars outside of those featured in the video would be a Cayman, handsdown!
The turbos from the iron were hilarious 🤣
I'm going with a British Racing green F-type. They look great without looking cartoonish like a few of the others.
-1 for not mentioning how beautiful northern Michigan was while you were there. If you wanted to throw a wrench in the loop with this series you could get estimates for insurance, major and minor repair costs, and price out some common mods just to give people an idea of what the car is really going to cost.
2:12 what was that lol
A mid-engine, hybrid, turbo I3 BMW sounds like the maintenance nightmare final boss.
The gas powertrain is basically the same as the one used in the Mini. The hybrid system is pretty simple, it's only got one motor in the front and a generator in the back. It's not nearly as bad as you'd think.
@@RasMag-l4j There's a video out there outlining the space problem with the i8. Biggest engine you'll be able to fit is a B48 4 cylinder
@@RasMag-l4j There is no room for an engine that's twice as long in the engine bay. Remember this is a transverse layout, and the car is already quite wide in the rear. Putting a big motor in the back would mean redesigning the car entirely.
@@dwilliams_racing maybe a yamaha inline 6 from the volvo stable as a wild co-op? It was transverse mounted in volvos, looked compact
@@dwilliams_racing It's not?
I've owned mid-engine cars before. Doing anything on them, anything at all, is between 100% - 500% more difficult than with an average, front engine car.
12:02 anybody else notice, James wife giving him the birdie behind the white jag? 🤭🤭🤭🤭😂😂😂😂😭😭

Not a wallet, not a gun, not drugs. FLASHLIGHT! 😂😂
32:35 I have had this exact same type of interaction with people. People have NO IDEA what cars are, they’re so used to their boring RAV4s and Nissan Rogues that they have no idea what it looks like or sounds like for a sports car to go by
I had a guy throw a half filled bottle of iced tea at my Veloster N once because of this. I was going 35 in a 35 in the middle of a line of traffic.
Real, happened in my MX-5 Miata! Going below the limit, not whipping it. Non-car people think if a car looks fast, it’s going fast. Haha.
If quad lock don't try and sponsor both throttle house channels for the foreseeable future, they need to slap themselves with a phone flying from a competitors phone mount.
You could just tell when you guys first got in the F Type, the grins on your face....grin and tonic it is!!
It’s gotta be the Jaaaaaag! Still such an amazing looking and sounding car for the price. If you’ve owned an Ftype R…you know 😉
While it might not be the most exciting choice, I think I would actually choose the C7.. arguably the most reliable, cheapest to maintain, and likelihood of finding a one owner with low miles that has been babied and perfectly maintained.
Mustang owners beat the piss out of their cars.
That F type is super cool, but certainly less reliable, long-term than the Corvette, and much more expensive to maintain as stuff starts to fail.
The Alpha is super cool, but a bit too weird for me personally
I looked away for a second "and then there's cake!" lmao
To me, the i8 has always looked newer than anything else. I forget it's as old as it is. It's futurism done right IMO.
