    Second year senior leading a F500 public client… Spot on with this video. My first year was so tough. I also went through a divorce at the end of busy season.
    For all the new seniors, keep your heads up, take a deep breath, make sure you remind yourself that it’s okay to ask for help, and take care of your mental health!

    Thank you for the very informative video. This makes so much sense. It seems to be a common practice to “train” new auditors with the whole “look at last year, old jobs” method. Sometimes it creates inefficiency and self doubt in staff. Not all seniors train equally and unfortunately that sometimes has consequences on staff performance.

    Great video. I work on the tax side at a small firm so there is no room to advance which is okay. I do take the time to train the interns or anyone new on staff. It is amazing what people think you know, right out of college. I take nothing for granted and teach them as they show a desire to learn more.

    Have you ever known anyone who didn't want to become a senior because they were put off by the supervisory responsibilities and preferred to be a top staff accountant? Something I've learned about myself is that I just don't have the temperament to manage people.
    I'm certainly not an advocate for the sink or swim approach but in my last job I we had people who did not try to improve after training or being told about a mistake they made. It was like they thought it was no big deal because someone else would catch whatever mistake they made.
    Lastly, loved your video about older people attempting accounting as a career change as I'm in that category. :-)

    I just started interning and all I would get is, "just look at prior year" and im like...
    HUH?? 🤨

      When I started working they would say, SALLY. I just looked at them, then they explained Same As Last Year. Or they would say, did you look in the files, I would think, if I looked, I don't know what I am looking for. Now 4 years later, I teach and train the new people all the things no one told me.

    Thanks for the video Stephie! I think that what annoys me the most of becoming a senior is the hours you have to make to do a good job, but I guess It will pay off! Thanks xx

    • @WithStephie
      @WithStephie  5 лет назад +1

      Definitely agree! Just do it for as long as you can without going crazy and I promise it'll pay off eventually! Usually when you leave the firm lol but if you're in it for the long haul, when you make partner 😁 generally the long hours don't end when you move up past senior. 🙅‍♀️🤦‍♀️

    Have you ever audited a tax provision for a client? Would love to hear about this experience from you.

    • @WithStephie
      @WithStephie  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Kendall! Yes I have but only at a high level with an understanding of the general mechanics. We typically provide the tax provision to our tax dept to review the technical pieces of it. I and other auditors will usually only tie out the provision to our TB and later to the financial statements/footnotes, especially for a more complicated client, so I was always grateful for our tax dept! I think that's common in most firms too 😁

    • @KendallCollier13
      @KendallCollier13 5 лет назад

      Stephie Mills I’m about to get up close and personal with those tax provisions.
      I never want to lose sight of learning from another person’s perspective; in this case the auditor. That’s not a role I’ve undertaken.

    How important do you say an internship is? I’m trying to decide between having a full course load next semester to graduate on time or if I take less classes and get an internship I would push graduating off till December.

    As you know industry doesn’t typically have a set structure for Senior, Manager, ect. How much experience as a staff do you think is necessary to ask for a promotion to become a senior?

    • @WithStephie
      @WithStephie  5 лет назад

      I would think minimum 2 years! You could always look up the job description of a senior either in your company or on open senior positions at other companies to speak to your ability to perform those duties. I have a video on how to get promoted, if you want more advice 😁

    I know this is old, but auditing is the most boring job I have ever had in my life. I loved getting to bs with the clients, and they all loved me. However, compared to the Army or working outside (working with my hands) it was very hard to ever enjoy the work because there wasn't anything tangible i knew i built or i completed. You could see signoffs, but there wasn't any joy in going client to client honeslty having no vested interest in their financials we just didn't want them to suck or take forever getting us stuff. I guess what I am saying is I could work 12 hours outside kinda doing my own thing building/ driving a piece of equipment easily. Sitting at a computer for so many hours drove me freaking crazy.
    Good video, I really am jealous of people who enjoy what they do for a living lol. I hope to find out what my calling is soon because audit wasn't it.
