So, I'm very new to this whole Raspberry Pi & RetroPie thing. I am not very knowledgeable about it at all. Recently, I purchased the LABISTS Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Complete Starter PRO Kit with 32GB Micro SD Card (4GB RAM). I was finally able to get it set up and I was able to play a few games on it last night (5/26/21). The main reason why I decided to go with a Raspberry Pi was because I'm a child of the 80s and 90s. I wanted to have a system that let me play retro video games such as arcade games and console games (Genesis & SNES) from that time period. The problem I've run into now is that some of the roms work fine and others don't. I can't figure out why this is happening. I have heard that arcade roms use MAME, etc . . . Some of the arcade and 16-bit console roms are working, but other ones are not. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix this latest issue that I'm facing? Thanks.
I had that happen before and am trying to remember. I think it only happened to me when I copied a SD card, and it had to do with either making the folder read/write or the file was checked out so I deleted all my saved input files. I did a search for "retropie inputs won't save" and there is a configuration in emulationstation for disabling auto configuration and also a configuration setting to delete all inputs.
Are you trying to change the buttons in MAME or a console emulator like the Super Nintendo? I had the problem where it wouldn't remember my Super Nintendo controls, I think it was caused by a copied SD card and one of the files thought it was open and couldn't be overwritten. If it is in MAME, I would try a different emulator. So if you're doing LR-MAME, change to MAME2003 and see if it works.
Are you using the tab key to change the Mame inputs or the quick menu (select + x)? For Mame I’d use the tab menu. Try changing emulators to Lr-Mame2003 like shown in the video at around 8:18
Thanks man! this is exactly the info I needed! very helpful!
I'm glad it was useful. Thanks for the feedback.

When I map the buttons using Input (this game), it works during that setting but will revert back next time I launch the game. Any advice?

When I select game override It doesn't keep my controller settings. Could it not be saving?
