I have to say👌 been playing for 43 years, self taught and can play the intro , but the break down of what is actually going on is crazy!! Thanks for this knowledge. Amazingly ridiculous!!😂 Godbless
Thank you so much! I've see a few transcriptions, but your breakdown is perfect for someone who can't sight read like a pro. This is exactly what I needed
Great video once again. Drums sound absolutely phenomenal. Even Neil in his DVD said that everyone plays this intro wrong because he switches his lead hand after the triplet on the smallest tom in the first big fill, and then a downbeat that feels like an upbeat on the second cymbal crash after the tom "cascade" before they go into the main riff. This intro took me months to get down when I first learned it and I couldn't even play it right until I slow-mo'd what Neil was doing.

Thank You Thank You Thank You! I've never really understood what was going on here. I am surprised at how upset I am at Neil's passing. I never knew him, but I feel like I've lost a personal friend. He was such a part of my growing up years. (I did get a postcard from him once! What great human being.)
Excellent addition to this series and it's cool to see you bring out this intro, being you've already shown the ride pattern that is also used in this song in a previous video. Right on man!
“Tommy The Cat” Primus “Spirit of Radio” Rush “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” Paul Simon “The Queen Is Dead” The Smiths “No Excuses” Alice In Chains “Where Eagles Dare” Iron Maiden “I am One” Smashing Pumpkins “The Summoning” Sleep Token “Life’s Been Good” Joe Walsh (simplicity) “Stinkfist” (percussion) or “Third Eye” TOOL (had to get Danny Carey on the list)
Did this video disappear for some time? I remember bookmarking this months ago, then when I finally got around to trying to work it up, I couldn't find it anywhere. Now it just came up in my suggestions
Hi Steven. Great video, I transcribed this myself a few years ago and came to similar conclusions to you. However, more recently I've been listening again and I'm troubled. During this intro, Alex Lifeson is playing a guitar riff which is 2 beats long. But the first part of the intro is 27 beats - 4 vars of 4 and 1 bar of 5. Somehow, after this section when Peart hits the double crash, they're still in line with this guitar riff. Somehow, during the last bar of 4 and the bar of 5, they've played 9 beats but Lifeson has played 10. Any thoughts on this? Do you think they've separated, musically, and come back together, or are the bass and drums counting something else?
Great observation...it's because it's not in 4/4 time - it's 2/4 !! It was killing me how it seemed that many peeps teaching it couldn't explain to me (anyone watching) a straight forward note/rest rhythm. 🤔 If you break it up into 2/4 you will find it changes it all on ya - even normal habitual play style It's A Danny Carey feel to me, I'm a newer drummer but I know my rudiments & started with Tool songs ~ working my way backwards with my own groove going on is making it all start to come together... Try this: once in 2/4 - the 1st roll starting on high tom is 1/32 - use a left hand double then RL 1/16 On 2nd Roll in 2/4 mid T & FT together then... go into snare roll w/ a 1/32 double w/right hand then 1/16 LRLR to High T w/ a 1/32 Left hand double then 1/16 RL to MT 1/16 RL to Low T 1/16 RL followed with 1/16 FT Right followed w/ another 1/16 stil a Right hand w/1/16 rest to 1/16 R side crash & 1/16 left side crash Get that 2nd roll down & then write it all in 2/4 moving backwards. Sorry, I'm obviously that new that I do not know all the correct lingo... Hope this helps ya...let me know, love to hear the feedback of your thoughts!
On that longer 2nd roll, you will hear the left hand 1/32 double stand out on high tom then rest blurs together till that 1/16 rest SHIT, 1/16TH REST is really in set of 3 of the last 2/4 part of bar going 1/16/1/8/1/16 if ya write it I think I may make sense to ya? Lolol

Awesome video, as always.... I thought of another one for ya tonight. Do a video of the beginning of “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits. I know I’m showing my age. But, I hear that song all the time on the classic Rock channel out of Charlotte, NC. I would love to see an accurate charting of that intro, before the guitar kicks in during the “I want my MTV” portion.
You must have changed something on that set, those Tama's sound great. New heads, mic's? KILLER! Oh yea, the lesson was pretty good too. I love the stuff your doing, cause I tried to put that together several years ago and was unsuccessful. I ended up just making my own intro up and got as close as I could, not bad, but not like this.
drummer0864 We’re using Earthworks mics now and they’re just light years ahead of others. As well, Tim has really been dialing in the mix of the room better. Trying to get a better representation of what it sounds like standing in the room. He’s killing the mix lately
Thank you so much for this lesson! Would you mind updating the link for the sheet music please? Currently brings up a 404 error page :/ Either way I'm really grateful for this lesson. You got yourself a new subscriber my dude, thanks again!!
Hey Stephen. What type of mics are those on your toms. I like them. What did you think of them. I’m in the market for new mics. Thanks bro. Keep up the good work
just wondering. this might be off topic, but how much double bass can you play? just curious and have you thought about doing some double bass lessons?
You makin this waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too complicated. Play it by ear. no need for and ee and a and eee. Any drummer talented enough to play rush don't need sheet music. I respect this tho and I'm just a little drunk. rock on and RIP Neil Peart.
A little drunks alright 👍🏻 We all learn in different ways. One benefit of looking at the sheet music is you begin to visually see the “Peart-isms” on his playing. Gone too soon for sure. Sad day man
I have to say👌 been playing for 43 years, self taught and can play the intro , but the break down of what is actually going on is crazy!! Thanks for this knowledge. Amazingly ridiculous!!😂 Godbless
Iconic drum intro... REMIX !!! Laughed so hard...

Begin the day
With a friendly voice
A companion, unobtrusive
Plays the song that’s so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood
Off on your way
Hit the open road
There is magic at your fingers
For the Spirit ever lingers
Undemanding contact
In your happy solitude.
Invisible airwaves
Crackle with life
Bright antennae bristle
With the energy
Emotional feedback
On a timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price -
Almost free…
All this machinery
Making modern music
Can still be open-hearted
Not so coldly charted
It’s really just a question
Of your honesty
One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity
“For the words of the profits,
Are written on the studio wall,
Concert hall -
Echoes with the sounds…
Of salesmen.”
Thanks for posting those. It's been a while since I've read them
What's the best classic rock drum intro? For me is "Good times bad times".

Learned this song a while ago! Freaking love it!
Max Long it’s a classic
I like Terry Bozzio's opening for The On;y Thing She Needs from his tenure with UK
You didn't play that ride bell beat at the end. I was sad.

Thanks Eddie!
And I like your instructor ;^)
Not the opening bit to Peaches en Regalia or Montana?
No complaints! Love your videos.
Both so great! The title is more of a question of what you think the best classic rock intro is...see the pinned comment.
Stephen Taylor Damn my illiteracy! Then I’ll rephrase it to “I like the intros to...” and so on.
Spirit of The Radio, The Spirit Of The Radio, The Spirit of Radio
Not seeing the link for downloading sheet music. But thanks for the lesson, can't wait to try it on the kit.

This is correct Adam. I agree, you should watch him play it to really learn it. But as far as what is played on the album, this is it.
