For me, the most important throughline in the series was Fry and Leela’s relationship. That of course, wasn’t the only thing that made the series great, but it was an ongoing story that I was VERY invested in, and I think a large portion of the fanbase felt the same way. But I think what made this through line so engaging, and what made it work for the audience, was how gradually and naturally they eased into it. And while I did start to feel like the will-they-won’t-they nature of Fry and Leela started to spin its wheels a little bit in the later seasons, you cannot deny that they absolutely stuck their landing. So join me as I break down that relationship development chronologically, talk about what worked, what didn’t work, and why I think the story of Fry and Leela’s relationship is the heart of Futurama.

DID I MISS ANY?!
You videos are amazing man
XD nope, got em all
I think you got the bulk of them, though this list does not encompass every time Fry saved Leela or Leela saved Fry (the latter is by far a higher number).
Writers are psychopaths. We enjoy manipulating audiences to fall in love with characters we then torment for their own suffering. I love to "break" characters, as in put them in positions where they lose themselves. Typically this happens when a character loses their most loved one (first example to come to mind would be of Avatar: The Last Airbender's Aang learning of Monk Gyatso's death). I love Fry and Leela's relationship, though looking back they have rarely been truly broken as people. The only instance of either of them breaking was probably Leela in her dream during "The Sting". I am starting to wish Futurama had a moment where Fry seriously thought he was responsible for Leela's death to see what happens when he breaks. How does Fry cope with the guilt that he has lost the only person he loves and lives for? The woman he came to the future for? A woman who's love he has earned over decades of wooing? I want to see that. I know, I'm demented.
I would love to discuss more Futurama with you but I'm afraid any comments will get drowned out by the sheer quantity of others commenting. You love Futurama, I love Futurama, but we actually disagree on some things. For instance, I am not happy with "Meanwhile" as a finale, and despite over a decade since passing from my first viewing, I cannot reconcile the time traveling in "Bender's Big Score". Thanks.
This would make a cool video on its own lol
The Day the Earth Stood Stupid- Leela thinks Fry died in the library.
I think my favourite moment with them as a couple was when fry and leela were waking in the park and bender tries to rob them, and leela just kicks him in the face and they rob him instead.
Wait wat episode was this
Another one is where they argue that they are dating over their looks and body switches and then ended up hooking up in ugly bodies
@@Freshlydeliveredegg Ugly? You trying to say Farnsworth and Zoidberg aren't the pinnacle of sex appeal?

@High IQ wow your such a savage i bet u watch a ton of great roasts compilations on youtube
The one thing I don't think gets enough credit during the time skipping episode is how genuinely remorseful Fry is thinking there may have been a chance he tricked her into marrying her. Even though he says ge doesn't think he did, he still sincerely apologized in case he did
a respectful king
Yes this
@@nance689 fr fr
I swear that Episode was a JoJo refrence
That’s one of the reasons I love Fry. He may act immature at times but he’s not malicious. In the moment when Fry and Leela were supposedly married, Fry genuinely believed he won Leela over and kissed her but after she shoved the bouquet in his mouth and divorced him, Fry started to think he tricked her and felt terrible about it, only to realize he did win her heart but he and Leela couldn’t remember. He saw the message he made, only for it to be blown up, was upset but when Leela and Bender denied seeing anything, he dropped it.
You really feel bad for the guy but you respect him for putting the woman he’ll always love first before himself.
They connect because they’re lonely, and in Meanwhile, they spend their lives alone with just each other
"But together, we're lonely together."
Excuse me.....I appear to have something in my eye....
Oh fuck that touched something
In “Fry and Leela’s Big Fling”, the song Leela plays on the vinyl is “Just the Two of Us”. I know it’s more of a contextual joke, but I thought it was a nice nod to the finale.
I really love the fact that there's a subtle hint that the reason fry and leela have always had secret feelings since the first season is cause the series finale made it so they didn't remember what happens but they still have those experiences in their subconscious which is my headcannon
I loooove this idea, stealing it for my headcannon too, thanks 🙏
1 second in and it's already perfect with the shot of the fans behind Leela when talking about Futurama fans
Google futurama fans
That is for sure a titualar moment in cinema?
That was Futurama's own joke lol
@@KingdomHeart556 I know, and it was a perfect use of it for the video
"but what does this mean for us and our many fans?"
The finale of Futurama was bittersweet but beautiful. Ending in a loop that brings us back to where it all started. Very poetic. Love the video
I wouldn't mind one last movie though
Why does everyone always think it loops back to the start of the series? I’m pretty sure the reset only brought them back to the start of the episode.
@@russmastermasterofrusses7463 The professor says that it would bring them back to the moment before he created the time button. That leaves a ton of room for leeway, but I think people think it’s a timeloop because on the first airing of the finale, the pilot was aired right after the episode fades out. Granted, there’s no canon confirmation one way or the other, but for a show like futurama an ending that resets everything to the beginning would be pretty fitting.
4th finale*
@@russmastermasterofrusses7463 I think I know why. Because I remember when it was first aired. When the 'final' episode ended the next thing coming up was the first episode, and they did it without an ad break. So it made the transition pretty seamless going from the final episode to the first one. This goes with John Doe's explanation pretty well too in the literal in-universe sense too.
They did it well despite the fact that David and Matt admitted they never intended for Fry and Leela to ever be together. They were like "Oh, Fry's a moron, of course he has no chance!" They didn't expect fans to be into it. But they were
Wait what?
@@hubertfarnsworth6824 Yeah. This interview with David X Cohen I saw on youtube, he said that it was just gonna be a one-sided crush on Fry's part. Not even a serious one. Just a running joke. He said that they were surprised that fans were so invested in this relationship. For that reason, they decided to mature Fry's character and make him more worthy of Leela. As well as this, they eventually decided to no longer string fans along.
@@c.j.3147 Well that's interesting. I'm now gonna have to search up all the David X Cohen and Matt groening interviews on RUclips.
Well the early seasons did have Fry and Leela drift towards other people aside from the first few episodes. It's only after S3 their relationship is mutual from both sides. At least we got the movies and CC to continue the story. God bless fan input.
@@c.j.3147 They still more or less got it in their way, as we can argue that the original Leela ended her life whiout Fry, and the Leela that Fry married with was not his Leela.
So weird! Fry and Leela’s relationship is so pivotal and important to the show that I thought they were together for a lot longer than they were.
"I'm drunk, I'm grouchy, and I'm gonna eat this peanut butter ... you wanna watch?"
"Well, not really, but I will."
... I honestly believe this is the truest expression of Fry and Leela's love in the entire series. It's a nod to the banal day-to-day reality of loving someone. It's not always about the big moments. It's much more often about just getting through life together. And sometimes, the answer is "not really" but, because you love them, you will.
Great development too. Fry makes big gestures but day to day isn't the ideal partner. Leela accepting that side of him after seeing his potential in lars shows they are evolving towards that better relationship.
I think that's a great way to show love
I wish we had more moments like those. Little things like, they watching a TV show together, going on dates only one would enjoy, but the other is having fun bc the other is too.
I’m Latin America all the episodes are scrambled since day 1, so I never knew the true sequence of events, this makes much more sense
I'm glad there was at least one season that was purely Leela and Fry together. In many shows that rely on this "on and off" dynamic, most of the time you only see them get together for good when the show ends, and rarely get the chance to see them IN a relationship.
I think for the "I can wait a little longer" actually does fit into the story. It's one thing for Fry to know Leela is there, he knows he's just waiting for her. It's another to think she's dead, he can't wait for her when she's dead, so he builds the duplicate.
Man I still tear up when I watch Fry's holophonor song at the end of the original finale. I think this has been my favorite show for over twenty years!
"To me this is more meaningful than their near-kiss"
You know what's most meaningful?
LEELA! I'M GONNA BUY YOU SOOO MANY LIZARDS!
Sometimes the sweetest moments result from what might appear as the most commonplace of dialog. Fry has been sitting with Leela for days while she was in a coma. When she comes out of it and Fry is holding her, his heart ready to explode from sheer joy and relief... Still, in passing, he gently tells Leela that she could really use a shower... Choking back tears, she tells him that he could use one as well. Not much in the way of dialog... But in context and presentation... one of the most romantic moments in the series... -Yankee Papa-
Ah, thats the reason The Sting is still my favourite episode on the whole show
I realy hope that we will se more of this small gestures in Hulu revival
I just noticed rhat the final scene of Fry and Leela walking into the wormhole was a callback to how Fry ended his performance to Leela in the original finale.
With him and Leela sharing a kiss as they hold hands and walking into the distance together
I was also really invested. I really wanted to see them have a kid, a daughter with one eye like her mom and her dad's bright orange hair...
Remember when Fry tried to fix the time button, and then said he got mad and hit it some more? He says, “I guess it’s good we didn’t have children.” 😂
But if you google “Fry and Leela children,” you can see some pretty cute fan art.
@@KatraCat420 pretty mature of them to see that they might not make good parents and decide no to. But eh, what the heck.

You can't just say how you feel about The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings! That makes me angry!

*YOUR REVIEW IS BAD AND YOU SHOULD FEEL BAD*
The Sting episode to me is a nightmare, watched it the other day and my husband held me while a cried. That one messes with me, especially as an adult with a SO I'd do anything for.
That just shows how great Katey Sagal is at acting. Everyone was great, but sometimes a Golden Globe Winner steals the show. And that’s what Katey did.
Fry crying and begging Leela to wake up got to me too..
@@vincentfranklin17 Leela & Professor crying got to me too. 'Cause that's how I'll react when their voice actors die. Leela crying is how I react to Jax Teller from SOA killing his own mother, Gemma. And it'll destroy me when Katey Sagal dies in real life.
Woah, I dont know if this was intentional by the creators or anything, but the ending of the episode "the devils hands are idle play things" is very similar to the scene in meanwhile of fry and leela walking across the ocean?? Was it intentional??
I didn’t even think about that!
I’m literally in the process of painting them with Don’t you ever wonder about the future? We’ll sure, but you’re always in it at the bottom
Even though it ended in a great note, there’s will always be that nagging felling to what happened to them after the episode “Meanwhile”.
Maybe that’s why I still do small fan comics about Fry and Leela having a family together. As the Professor once said, “A man can dream”
Of course, there's the fact that, on the original airing on Comedy Central, when the credits popped up for "Meanwhile," "Space Pilot 3000" started up. So their stroy, officially, never ends…
Thank you for these futurama videos. I haven’t seen anyone else dive deep into the series as much as you have
At least their will they won’t they wasn’t dragged on for too long and annoying like Ross and Rachel in Friends.
THEY WERE ON A BREAK!!
Nah Jk they were so annoying and Rachel was too good for him
I feel like people may not be subscribing just yet because, like me, you've only recently started showing up on our recommended feeds and we need time to see if you can consistently produce good content, which you do.
Haha well thanks, I'm doin' my best!
I’m apart of the 12.5% AYYYYYYEEEE
They went in different phrases
1-2: friends
3-5 and movies :slight attraction but not dating
6-8 : on and off
9-10: official couple because they go on several dates and in background scenes there is relationship style body language
I mean, it's cute that "Meanwhile" ends with Fry and Leela deciding to go back and essentially start over, implying that they're willing to fall in love all over again with each other... and maybe I'm weird but, I kinda wish the show had ended with them declining to go back. I think it would've been more poignant if they had said, "No thanks Professor. We're content with how we lived our lives during the time freeze. We're happy living out our remaining days here with each other."
I agree, I like both endings but them going back really solidifies the brand/vibe of their relationship
I disagree, because the ending we got transitions back to the first episode. Making it all circular. The series canonically never ends.
The problem with that is that it ends with all their freinds staying frozen knowing they could have fixed it.
I get being content with how you lived your life but in all honesty itd be very selfish to do that. They were willing to sacrifice their memories and have to go around again because otherwise the world would be frozen forever, and what happens after they die? Then the world is frozen forever.
I don’t know if anyone else saw but in the “Devil hands are idle plaything” at the very end the play the music turns back to beautiful visuals. Showing that even without the hands he’s still trying to learn.
It’s pretty bad when your quoting the quotes in the video because you’ve quoted them by heart lol. Love the Futurama content!
I feel like bender was the key between fry and leelas relationship he even showed them there fate in the third season finale
This made me realize there’s a lot of CC Futurama episodes I still haven’t seen. This makes me sad that I missed out, yet also happy that I can watch more.
I wrote a leela and fry love themed song and this video helped tremendously. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. ❤️🥂
I love time-line videos. So, I'm very into this.
You honestly deserve way more subs and views. Loving all the content. I think I rewatch Futurama, KOTH, and bojack all the time. Love the deep dives you do!
1. Love your channel! Can't remember if I first watched a Futurama or Bojack video from you first, but I love them.
2. That ad segue was solid.
3. "Please don't stop playing, Fry. I want to hear how it ends." will always put a lump in my throat.
4. Finale was excellent, I loved their relationship.
I seem to remember the season 7 episode ‘fun on a bun’ and I liked the way Leela fully addressed Fry’s more idiotic tendencies, albeit the on again off again thing was pretty bad here. The parts I enjoyed were the exploration of grief, something we’d already been exposed to, and how despite the fact that she had been initially embarrassed by him, in the end comes to accept that part of his personality. Not only that but it seems that Fry attempts from that point on to present, at least what he thinks is more mature behavior.
This would have been perfect for two days ago.
this video made me pretty emotional. they've always been one of my favorite couples in animation.
I think their relationship went to new heights when they made it official and it was really well done, it wasn't Leela settling for Fry they both truly love each other and
it became a real heartfelt and a comfortable relationship once they got over their awkwardness about what they were to each other. Since that moment they
were completely natural with each other and around others, no awkwardness about showing affection. They hug, they hold hands, when the entire crew is in danger they'll run to each other to embrace, Leela openly gushes about her engagement ring and happily calls Fry her fiancé. It was honestly like they were a married couple who have been together long enough to really know each other without falling out of love. Despite being a comedy cartoon their relationship was one of the most honest and realist feeling in most shows I've seen and i'm glad the show was mature enough to give them a few seasons where they were official and didn't feel the need to split them up all the time to create 'drama' and I hope this continues into the new season with their marriage and beyond.
Rewatching this recap, getting to the end and saying "so far" after everything with tears in my eyes i love Fry and Leela.
I love it how in each series finale it always ends with a depiction of Fry and Leela kissing, holding hands then heading into the unknown together, with the exception of overclockwise because rather than stepping into the unknown they're reading their future which is unknown to us.
Edit: that comedy central season I can see reflecting a bit in Disenchantment, that uncertainty, straying back and forth from the formula.
Concerning the commentary of the worms showing Fry's potential, I like to think Lars was that true potential. Even if it was through another 'face' and name, that I feel was his true potential, which is why I agree with your comment on Lars being that catalyst for Fry to really be the improved version of himself (on his own) for Leela, and she loves everything about that in the end. It's beautifully written throughout the course of the show, and truly one of my favorite couples in animation.
(If you've said this already I apologize 😂)

Watched this from start to end. Well done!
My possibly favourite fry and leela scene was when the proffesor was creating the parabox and everyone was rumbling and with him screaming in the background, and then you have fry trying to convince leela to go out with him while ignoring the professor
I remember when meanwhile aired right after the end of the episode they played the first episode of the series and it made the ending perfect because it essentially looped back around. Such a cool and unique way to tell the stpry and end the show
9:00 I swear that episode is the only thing I have every seen were the "it was all a dream ending" actually enhances it.

Well, one of them is a Golden Globe winner. And we know which one it is.
Keep up these amazingly in depth analyzations, Johnny
Parasites lost was the first episode of Futurama I ever watched and it 100% sold me on the show
That was beautiful description of their love. Im crying 😢
One of the most beautiful things in their relationship in the final moment of the episode meanwhile the true finale before the Hulu episodes you can hear in that final moment where fry asks Leela if she wants to go around again she says I do it closes that episode out with the same musical tone that they ended the late Phillip j fry on.
Just found your channel and I'm loving your Futurama and Disenchantment videos! Question... Are you a Boosh fan??.. Johnny 2 Cellos... Johnny 2 Hats? Just wondering! Keep up the great work! 😄
Man everytime I watch the Lela bee episode I always cry every time!!
Make a whole video on each time they think the other died?
I loved the fry and leela story. Was magnificent
I thought it was handled beautifully the whole time. I don't mind the will they/won't they at all in how it was handled in Futurama because it was actually an on and off relationship rather than "they both like each other, but just won't say so" or "they both want to be together, but one is dating another, but the other finds someone new by the time the other finally leaves" and all that mess that drags it out excruciatingly.
And there's enough very warm emotional episodes to let you know it's happening eventually. Their love was so powerful it survived multiple threats of cancellation and gave us multiple amazing finales.
I think that Fry and Leela were suitors in Season 6. They both knew they loved each other, but Leela was still unsure about fully committing to a relationship with Fry, and I think he kinda felt the same by then, so they just wanted to take things slow at first.
Then, of course, after the season finale they both felt confident enough to be in a committed relationship.
I never realized the whole time episode thing that she dosent get to be with him and basically dies regretting everything its so dang sad i never really thought that deep about it
There was a hint of romance in the pilot where Leela and Fry briefly hold hands in old New York and Bender ruins the moment and steals Leelas ring.
"He was a good man, Leela!"
"Yeah! You were!"
*chokes*
Damn I didn't remember that she actually got to know the truth! I always thought he'd keep it as a secret :o
That... *sniff* was heartwrenching!
Matt Groening and David X Cohen have said their original intention was for Fry and Leela to never get together. It was only ever supposed to be a running gag about how Fry's love was unrequited and he had no chance with her. But once they saw how much fans were invested in the two's relationship, they decided to have Leela fall in love with Fry after all.
I’ve been having a blast re watching futurama (again) because of your videos, I just can’t get enough I guess 🤷♀️

Great video essay. Thanks for reminding me about this "comedy" now leave me alone to cry in peace.
You know, I always assumed they were together as of the third era. It just wasn't a huge focus of the show going forward, so they didn't thematisize it as much as they did in earlier seasons. I thought it was perfect.
Great video I seen Futurama like million times from beginning to end. Love the series.
