Trek Domane AL 3 - Seven Month Review

- I've had my 2022 Trek Domane for a bout seven months now. With one notable exception, I have been really pleased with the Domane. That single issue is the seat post, more on that below. I just love that metallic sapphire blue fading to grey paint job, it really pops in direct sunlight. From a more practical standpoint, the 54 inch frame's geometry is perfect for me. I can ride this bike until my legs fall off, and not have a hint of back pain. That's an issue for me, so I really appreciate this bike's fit.
Regarding the seatpost, it's been the single problem I have had with the Domane. No matter how carefully I torque the post collar to the recommended 4 to 7 Newton Meters, the post will not stay put. It slides down into the seat tube over the course of a ride, to the point where it impacts my knees. My local bike shop had no solutions, and I really didn't think this rose to a warranty return level.
Then someone mentioned they had the same issue and solved it with a new seatpost. I measured the stock seat post and it came in at 27.0mm instead of the spec'd 27.2mm. I did the same on the seat post from my recently upgraded Marin Eldridge Grade 1, which came in at 27.2mm. I swapped the seat posts and I am looking forward to seeing if this solved the problem.
Jim, You've got the best cycling channel! It's not full of a bunch of hard rock with wild ride footage just the information you need to make an informed purchase thanks.
Thank you for the kind words. 😁
It's a truly beautiful looking bike! Wish I could afford one 😅
I enjoy your reviews,Jim!
Many happy rides!
Greetings from Croatia from Kris 😎
Thank you! I admit I am surprised anyone form Croatia has seen my little channel. :)
Glad you are still enjoying your purchase. Sometimes one had to treat themselves. I have a feeling that you have finally got to the bottom of the drifting seatpost. 😊
The Marin seatpost worked fine on a long ride yesterday. Who would think 0.2mm would make such a difference?
Thanks looking at this bike in the coming months and I’m going to get the exact color can’t wait to see in in the sunlight!!
It's really stunning in sunlight.
great video Jim. Really appreciate and honest review from an non pro rider. Very Helpful
Thank you for the kind words.
Great video, this is my dream bike it’s have good features as carbon fork and i like the mechanical disc brakes for me easier to maintain . now I know if I got it just replace the seat post with carbon one . Thank you and enjoy riding safe sir
Thank you. At the very least take a set of calipers with you. :)
Thanks for your videos Jim. I'm considering this bike or the Trek FX 3, and RUclips reviews are very helpful before I get to the shop to try them.
I'm happy to be helpful :)
I’m looking at FX3 also. What did you go with? You happy with the decision?
@@stevec1022 Hi Steve, I ended up buying a Trek Domane 4, and no, I'm quite disappointed. The aluminium top tube developed a bulge on the underside, which I believe is due to it deforming under compression. Trek refused to accept a warranty claim. Also, the general quality just isn't there, for the amount this bike cost. My previous bike had a CroMo steel frame, and as soon as I can get rid of the Trek POS I'll go back to steel. Whereabouts are you? Wanna buy a Trek Domane 4? ...
I have the same bike in pearl white for a year now and I love it
Honestly, I think it's the best road bike I've ever had!
That's great!
Nice looking into the same bike nice video
Thanks! 👍
Hey Jim - Still happy with the seat post ?
I have a 2024 AL5 Gen4, and the seat post also slips.....starting to think about ordering another seat post to see if it stops the slipping. FYI - I weigh in around 200lbs
Nice review buddy. Am thinking about getting a 54 size domane too 😊 may I ask how tall are you?
Thanks! I'm 5' 8" with a 32 inch inseam.
I have a size 54 and I'm 5,10 and it's ok
Hello, congratulations for the video. Can the Domane AL 3 be fitted with 700 X 40c tires? Thanks for answering.
Hi, and thank you! According to Trek, the biggest tires the Domane can take are 35mm.
Do you ride on the drops as well? If so how does it feel? I found the drop position on Trek emonda on the other hand are too aggressive
I had back issues earlier last year so I didn't ride the drops a lot on my prior bike. I started riding the again on this bike after getting my back adjusted. It was a bit of a slow process but now it's good. I think these bars' shallow depth makes the drops pretty comfortable.
How do you find the brakes? Some people complain about mechanical as being inferior to hydraulic but the price of the AL3 is so much better than the Al4 so I'm torn.
I find the brakes to be amazing compared to my rim brake bikes. Hydraulics would no doubt be even better but as you said, the price was right. I'm happy with them.
@@JimsObsessiveCyclingDisorder Thanks! I I appreciate it. I ended up ordering the Al4 with the Trek store having a sale but did strongly consider the 3. Hope it works as well for me as it does for you.
@@almassengalehow is the holding up.
That seat post issue is a warranty level issue it should work. I have the same bike and no issue with post. I just wish i had gotten hydraulic brakes.
Did you try putting a couple coats of good paint on the seatpost where it sits inside the frame. The should cure it , without the need for a new post
That's an interesting idea. Since the replacement seat post works, I'm going to leave it be. :)
Where do get those lights from ?
I got them at my local bike shop.
At 54cm, what height is this specifically for a rider? Anybody?
I think its on the higher end of "medium". It fits me well with my 32 inch inseam.
If you put the torque wrench on 5 it will slip I put it on 6 and a half
The problem ended up being that the post was 27.0mm instead of 27.2mm. I replaced the post and have had no trouble since.
Is this a 2022 or 2023 model?
Hi, It's a 2022 model.
