Well deserved promotion, I remember the joke pulled on me to announce I was being promoted to Staff Sergeant. I was and am a joker at heart. I was an E-4 Sergeant at the time when my First Shirt ordered me to come to the Squadron building to see the commander. When I got there the First Shirt was ranting and raving about my dorm windows being broken from the inside out. I was the only one possessing a key to my dorm room. I began to think I was going to kiss goodbye my Sergeant's stripes for Senior Airman. We entered the Colonel's office with Senior Master Sergeant Triplett reporting. I was standing at attention in front of his desk thinking my military career might be over. The Colonel said I do not know what to do with you! Then he put out his hand and shook mine congratulating me on my selection for Staff Sergeant. The windows were not broken and Sergeant Triplett was laughing. Pay backs came later for him. The Colonel handed me the paper listing my line number and the date of 1 October 1981 as the date of my promotion. Of course I messed with Sergeant Triplett at any opportunity so I deserved his pay back. He had my Flight Chief, Shift Commander, Executive Lt. and the Commander all in on it!! I miss those guys!!
He jumped from A1C to SSG??? I bet that made waves in the Air Force. Not sure I entirely agree with it but whatever, good for him. I bet he was stoked and sounds like the crowd liked it. Never heard of such a promotion but I imagine that was exciting to witness.
Ke Th he was the airman who thwarted a terrorist attack in France while traveling with friends. He is of the best of the best our air Force has, selfess and courageous.
Ke Th , the SrA rank was at the proper time in service/ grade. The Step Promotion to SSgt was either held back until after his SrA promotion date or it just happened to fall at a similar time. He could have also been awarded SrA, BTZ (below the zone) which would be an early promotion based on merit and a written package from his supervisor. I don’t remember how much earlier, it’s enough time that could allow you to test for SSgt a cycle ahead of the peers that had packages go through at the same time. This young man did a brave thing and I have no clue what his coworkers and boss think of him. Or if he is good at his actual Air Force job or not. He deserves this based on his actions that day. Had it happened in a combat zone I could see it even being submitted for a Medal Of Honor instead of the Airmen’s Medal and Step Promotion.
This Airman was recognized for saving many lives, his squadron commander promoted him under the step promotion program, then the Chief of Staff in turn promoted him to the next grade of Staff Sergeant. The airman was an Airman First Class, then wore Senior Airman for a few minutes until the next announcement of being promoted to Staff Sergeant. Very usual but permissible according to Air Force Regulations!! I witnessed a man promoted two grades due him saving lives of his fellow airmen during a horrific accident!!
@@GM8101PHX I guess in the military one of the most important qualities is coolness under pressure, or in an emergency situation, this man has it in bucket-loads...I am sure he will make an excellent SSG, despite the rareness of this event it seemed well received by the audience and all involved...which is hard to fake. One other thing, have you seen the size of him, that is one big fella!

Whatever happened to him after he got out?

Mitchell Smith Your commander can recommend you for a thing called a STEP promotion so they STEP promoted him right after he put on SrA
As can (in this case) the POTUS!
Google his name.. He saved countless lives
