According to Soarer's documentation, the left function keys are from left to right EXTRA_F1, EXTRA_F2, etc. The hash key is EUROPE_1 and the key in the numpad is EXTRA_SYSRQ. Their scancodes are used internally by the converter and aren't output to the computer. The hid_listen utility from pjrc can also read their scancodes.
Nice job on this one Chyros! Your new equipment definitely brings out the true sound of the model M unlike some of your older videos where the 'twang' couldn't really be heard.
I happen to have an extremely old 122-key M made May 1, 1986, with features such as the massive two-stage spring-loaded feet, stepped modifiers, threaded cable connector, and barcode-style label on the bottom. After screw-modding it and comparing it to an IBM Model F (3178), it's honestly just a heavier-feeling F in my opinion. I did remove the rubber mat between the plate and the membranes, which further increases the tactility of the board. Very highly recommended, and I have a video of it on my own channel.
I just noticed that there's something on the camera lens at around 623/1920x 892/1080y from 0:57 to 5:38, I thought there was a dead pixel on my monitor
Hey Thomas, I feel like in this video the audio peaks quite a bit. You may either want to check your settings/microphone or the distance you're away from the video. Could also be my shitty earbuds though *shrugs*
These battleships come in so many different crazy variants. I have one M 122 with the huge two part feet, square logo, DIN connector and metal ring, and one with the oval logo, flip out feet, and RJ45 connector. The quality difference between them is huge. The big 122 is much heavier and more solid than the newer ones. Proves you have to be really careful when buying these terminal boards.
With only one exception, I've noticed that all Model M have nubbed F and J keys while all Model F don't have any nub keys. The exception is the IBM Wheelwriter which uses a Model M mechanism but has no nub keys. I've been able to use this method to predict a couple keyboards who I didn't know the identity of, one of which was completely unknown even to the collecting community. It's also a really easy question to ask a seller, although with the battleship, asking whether it's got a metal back or not is a better question. And on topic, I've seen F122 with the rainbow zinc coated back plates, but they are much rarer.
At a goodwill in my area, they have a battlecruiser there for $5, but it has some weird ass eithernet connecter. Any idea how to get that workable on a modern machine, cause it felt real nice to type on
Cool, do you prefer IBM Model M 122 (1987 is the 1987 Type 1 or Type 2 or another type?) from mechanical switches today from Cherry, Gateron, Akko, Kailh? If it's that circular plug with I think 6 pins in it, how much is the adapter to make it worth with a Mac (USB)? Or is there a mod to make it attach to a wireless receiver or Bluetooth? Is the M122 considered a clicky blue switch today? How much should one pay for an IBM M 122 (though I have a good mechanical keyboard already with RGB and it was bought on sale at a still expensive, for me US$40.61 with wireless and RGB :-). It's got clicky blue switches. God bless, Rev. 21:4
Can you do old laptop reviews like a Macintosh PowerBook? Or is it strictly keyboards for this channel? Are there any keyboards with plunger switches that you have?
The very first computers I used had these and no mouse, the screen what green and black. I was so scared of this keyboard, like what pressing one of the keys might do.
Orihalcon just put up f107s up on ebay today! Definitely should look into it. thought this was worth mentioning since this is a new video and fs were mentioned.
Well, now I know for sure thas my Battleship is an M. But that's not the only reason htis Video was helpful: I wouldn't have thought of, that this badge was shiny silver metal (didn't want to destroy the thing, so I didn't touch the thing that turned out to be a sticker). Even though it's not an F, I'm not disappointed at all, the keyfeel is really great and me as an early 2000s-child has never experienced something similar before. Also I got it with German layout for less than 40$ in exchange for it being covered with a brown layer of easy to remove dirt. I also found out that it's from 1987, what should be about two years after they were introduced. As far as now I fixed the problem of RShift getting stuck by chopping a bit of the stabilizer off and added a coil spring form a pen to the unused hole in the spacebar, to make it stiffer (I think its light and hollow keyfeel didn't really fit the overall sturdyness of the keyboard). Now I'm only waiting for the Teensy to arrive, to finally get it working!
Do you have any tip for storing and displaying a small keyboard collection l. For now I just got them Stacked on top of each other. How do you do it? Any special shelfs or furniture?
The model F is superior to model M in pretty much all possible ways... expcet one: the sound. Model M just sounds better. It's lower pitched and bassier, as opposed to the, honestly slightly annoyin, high pitched model F's.
I have been told that you could do the "floss mod" on the Model F to silence the ringing. (deskthority.net/wiki/Dental_floss_mod) I have not seen it on a Model F myself, but I did it on my Model M2 and can not hear any ringing from it.
That's pretty subjective. The Model M definitely sounds chunkier. The clean, high-pitched sound of the F indicated the presence of the extremely strong metal backplates. When you have the two side by side like I do, it really makes the M sound cheap and plasticky in comparison.
hey lovely reviews I have a question. Icame across some ibm terminal keyboards but the wire to connect looks like a RJ45. with an adaptor will this work on a modern PC?
Well shit. one of my battleships is INDEED this very variant with the DIN plug. the rest are all RJ jacks. From what I've gathered over the last weekend when i was at VCF East, they were used either on IBM terminals or RS/6000 machines, for the both of them. very interesting indeed. now makes me wonder if I can sell that particular one off with an adapter for a decent price if I get it cleaned up. I really have no need for one in all honesty.
just got my ibm model m 122 but the 0 key on the number pad seems to have really bad key chatter sometimes but the rest seems to be okay would this mean its time to bolt mod or is it a simple case of the board getting old ?
b4 i got the converter from orialcon i dry typed you know where you pretend to use it the fault is not all the time just now and then so not 100% sure if its the computer or the keyboard
dude need your help again.... i can get a keyboard 1394312 model m its from an terminal pc(from 1985) but it had that wierd RJ45 connector..is there a way to use this keyboard on a modern pc?!
d´oh yeah you said it once in one of your vidz but i was not sure an to lazy to search it ...so the soarers converter hoped i can avoid that but guess i keep looking than ...
I'm thinking about taking one of those IBM M122 keyboards and putting a Raspberry Pi inside it, like a Commodore 64. Now I have two questions that some folks here might be able to answer: Do you think there's actually enough space inside one of those to put in a Raspberry Pi and a Teensy or Arduino for conversion? I know you can fit a Raspberry into a Cherry G80-3000, but what about one of these? Also, are the M122 keys somewhat interchangeable with "normal" Model M keys, so you could change some of the terminal-based keys with more conventionally labelled keys? Cheers!
Frankly, I wouldn't bother doing a bolt-mod unless you find that keys feel weird or don't register properly. These things are more robust than you might think ;) .
I have been trying to find a decent Model F 122 like the one you have but can't seem to locate one in good condition. Do you know where I could find one ? I am in the USA./ Twitter @BryanClampett
i see i did see some where where you can program the keyboard to have keys doing this that and the other and i love your videos btw never new keyboards have soo much history behind them
Man I hear so many good things about these buckling spring keyboards and I've been dying to try them. They're so expensive and big though, so it's not something I've wanted to commit spending that kind of money on.
yeah yeah you can watch for exemple "big yotuber" videos and you'll in the "plus" tab, the subtitles made by who and which language they've done. I'd love to translate your videos to watch them with my brother ! x)
According to Soarer's documentation, the left function keys are from left to right EXTRA_F1, EXTRA_F2, etc. The hash key is EUROPE_1 and the key in the numpad is EXTRA_SYSRQ. "If it's black metal, it's a model F"
So it'll play some Mayhem or Emperor?
DAMN YOU ! TELL ME WHERE THIS RECYCLING CENTER IS !! *bangs head on desk*
Yes, I would also like to know where this recycling center is
He said in another video he has a bunch of sources and calls them all the "recycling center" for some reason. Probably to be lazy
Nice job on this one Chyros! Your new equipment definitely brings out the true sound of the model M unlike some of your older videos where the 'twang' couldn't really be heard.
:D

I just have an IBM Model M122 yesterday and I am new to buckling spring....... it gonna be difficult.
That new microphone setup is really fantastic, Thomas! Keep the great videos coming!
Other microphones simply exploded the second he opened his mouth.
I just noticed that there's something on the camera lens at around 623/1920x 892/1080y from 0:57 to 5:38, I thought there was a dead pixel on my monitor
I use a square badge M122 at work, bloody love the thing. Turns every head that walks past it too :)
Great review, Thomas. Keep up the great work!
I guess that confirms my M122 is a battle cruiser, complete with APL and colour legends. Great job as usual :)
Yikes, those old Model M's are so pingy! Nice video Thomas.
Hey Thomas, I feel like in this video the audio peaks quite a bit. You may either want to check your settings/microphone or the distance you're away from the video.
Could also be my shitty earbuds though *shrugs*
No, it's something I tried out with this video, but it didn't work as I had hoped. It shouldn't be in subsequent videos though.
Could you share the address of the recycling center you got these from?
Awesome! I picked one up from a recycling center for $15 2 years ago. They had a stack of 6 back then! I should go back and look.

Imagine taking this hooked up to a laptop on a long flight.

If these are battleships and battlecruisers does this make the Selectric a Pre-Dreadnought
At a goodwill in my area, they have a battlecruiser there for $5, but it has some weird ass eithernet connecter. Any idea how to get that workable on a modern machine, cause it felt real nice to type on
You need a converter. Battlecruiser Ms usually came with that connector, or rarely, one like the one in this video.
Metal Neon lucky! All I see in good freaking Will is a Dell and HP
Really old m122s have a beige painted metal backplate, like the one that I own. Don't know how much mine weighs though.
whats the name of the converter shown at 4:45?
It's one of Orihalcon's converters.
Soarer's

I would if I'd find one that has an interesting keyboard in it, but almost none of them do.
"I like the way in confuses other people when they see it." You need to see an IBM 3178 C1. I have one and the layout is almost unusable.
The very first computers I used had these and no mouse, the screen what green and black. I was so scared of this keyboard, like what pressing one of the keys might do.
Vídeo esclarecedor! Eu quase comprei um M122 (ao invés de um F122) por engano
When is the M122 oval badge video gonna come out?
Orihalcon just put up f107s up on ebay today! Definitely should look into it. thought this was worth mentioning since this is a new video and fs were mentioned.
He's had them for ages. They're quite pricey, though, even if I'd really like one.
Well, now I know for sure thas my Battleship is an M. Is this the keyboard used on the 5270? I'm supposed to be getting three of those which were used on an AS/400.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm not british. When you say you bought the keyboard for "50 p", does that mean 50 pounds or pennies?
when Brits say 50p they mean 50 pence
when we say 50 quid we mean 50 pounds.
Oh right, I forgot all about quid :D thanks!
Nick m also, if someone says "50 pennies", thy mean they have 50 one-penny pieces. To say you have half a pound, you need to say "50 pence".
Do you have any tip for storing and displaying a small keyboard collection l. For now I just got them
Stacked on top of each other. How do you do it? Any special shelfs or furniture?
I have them all in boxes in a big cupboard.
The model F is superior to model M in pretty much all possible ways... expcet one: the sound. Model M just sounds better. It's lower pitched and bassier, as opposed to the, honestly slightly annoyin, high pitched model F's.

You need a converter, not an adapter, but yes, you can make these boards work on a modern PC.

great review. Thank you.
Now we know how to distinguish them by appearance, just check the keys beside spacebar.
No, that doesn't work xD . As I mentioned, the M could come with both types ;) .
Amazing vid
just got my ibm model m 122 but the 0 key on the number pad seems to have really bad key chatter sometimes but the rest seems to be okay would this mean its time to bolt mod or is it a simple case of the board getting old ?
You can open up the case first to see if there's a lot of rivets missing in that area. Do you use the key a lot?
b4 i got the converter from orialcon i dry typed you know where you pretend to use it the fault is not all the time just now and then so not 100% sure if its the computer or the keyboard
dude need your help again.... i can get a keyboard 1394312 model m its from an terminal pc(from 1985) but it had that wierd RJ45 connector..is there a way to use this keyboard on a modern pc?!
Yeah, you can make or buy a soarers converter for it :) . It speaks Set 3.
d´oh yeah you said it once in one of your vidz but i was not sure an to lazy to search it ...so the soarers converter hoped i can avoid that but guess i keep looking than ...

firt; think o, the cae i very roomy inide, hould be poible, econd; ye, they are fully compatible.
Alright, thanks for the help!
That soarer's converter must have broken the S key, eh?
The keyboard I was preparing for at the time developed a broken 2, W, S, X, and caps lock key.
Where can we buy a converter? And for how much?
just bought a IBM model M 122 :) i know it will more than likely need bolt moding but how do you do that or are there people who can do bolt moding ?
Frankly, I wouldn't bother doing a bolt-mod unless you find that keys feel weird or don't register properly. These things are more robust than you might think ;) .
oh i see i am just waiting for it to come then il see if it does so none bolt moded will last for a while
I saw a video where someone took out the foam matt out of the m122 and it sounded like an F
It probably was one, the M122 doesn't have a foam mat :p .
Thomas, I just got a Model M 122 made in October of 1986, and it has a foam pad inside it.
In the switch assembly or just the case?
In between the membrane and the plastic barrel board that houses the switches. So I'd call that the switch assembly (I guess?)
Oh wow.
Where would you recommend buying an m122. I want one because I love old tech. I can’t find any for under $180 working or non working.
www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/UB40B5A
@@fatswissandtee thanks
where can i find a F122 ? i see theres more M122 than F
This is correct, the M122 is substantially more common than the F122. They pop up every now and then, just keep your ear to the ground :) .
haha love the comment but i ma shocked at how expensive these keyboards are
I have been trying to find a decent Model F 122 like the one you have but can't seem to locate one in good condition. Do you know where I could find one ? I am in the USA./ Twitter @BryanClampett
Keep an eye on eBay. Also, Cindy gets them from time to time.
so you can use this keyboard with upto date pc?
Yes, with the right converter.
i see i did see some where where you can program the keyboard to have keys doing this that and the other and i love your videos btw never new keyboards have soo much history behind them
Hypothetically, if you were to sell all the keyboards you own for what you think is a fair price, how much in total do you think you'd get?
Something with four figures.
why dont you clean those nasty cables.
how can you remap keyboards ?
charlotte Hornibrook you need a converter, external software, or a keyboard natively capable of it.
Man I hear so many good things about these buckling spring keyboards and I've been dying to try them. They're so expensive and big though, so it's not something I've wanted to commit spending that kind of money on.
I just wish I knew how to go about getting a nice model M without paying $150. Maybe I'll just have to pay $150... :(
The company Unicom is still making them with original parts and same machines for about $90 for the standard M
If your recycling centre could operate eBay they could fund not just themselves but the entire council deficit as well.
Jouw videos zijn goed.
Please make a 10 minute video just typing this board
Incorrect, a 10 minute video of only typing on a Model F
nice intro
"Made in the Netherlands" same... On freedom's day... When Hitler lost
i used to have one of these and i lost it in a move. i kick myself everyday
Will you, one day, activate community subtitles ?
What are they? Oo
I think people can submit their own subtitles for you to approve and use on your videos
Wow, that's a thing? xD
yeah yeah you can watch for exemple "big yotuber" videos and you'll in the "plus" tab, the subtitles made by who and which language they've done. I'd love to translate your videos to watch them with my brother ! x)
I'll see if I can so something with this. Stay tuned.
