Feeling nostalgic for going to the Hong Kong Airport via bus. So I’m here. Thanks for fulfilling my nostalgia need
Excellent ride! I enjoyed it all. As a pilot for United Airlines, I took this route many times after Chek Lap Kok airport opened. But what was interesting, was how the new airport and the highway to it (with all the bridges) got built... so fast! In the 1995-1998 time frame, as I flew my plane into the old Kai Tak airport (we knew it was doomed), each flight I would see the construction on the mighty highway with not one, but TWO amazing bridges that resembled the San Francisco Golden Gate bridge (seen at 14:52 and 17:08 in this video) and... the amazing transformation of tiny Chek Lap Kok island into an airport!
Check Lap Kok was a tiny island, just a steep sided hill, no bridge to it, just a cone shaped small mountain. Somehow (helicopter? in pieces?) they got a bull-dozer up on top and he would go back and forth, slowly scraping the tiny mountain down to a flat island of much bigger size! We saw the progress each week as we flew into HKG Kai Tak.
In 1997, British control of Hong Kong ended. And in 1998, Kai Tak was closed (its now a bunch of high rise apartments) and the new airport with multiple runways was now open, out in the bay. No more IGS to runway 13. We called it the 'laundry approach' because we were sure our wing tips would snag the laundry hanging on the balconies of the Kowloon apartments , or some called it the 'checkerboard approach' as the final approach was directly toward the big checkerboard billboard on a small hill, just north of Kai Tak, and then you made a hard right turn in the final seconds to land on the runway, 'over there'!
But I really enjoyed this bus ride... although I've gotta wonder where you found the 'elevator music' that lasted 30+ minutes! There was not much traffic that day, huh? It was often bumper to bumper when I rode it from Central or Wan Chai on the Island, or Tsim Sha Tsui district on Kowloon. Strange, the airline never seemed to put us in the Peninsula Hotel, always something much cheaper along Nathan Road (Miramar hotel comes to mind) or cheaper on the island, in Wan Chai district!
why dont take the airport express
I love all these bus rides in Hong Kong, on the trams too! Hong Kong is a lovely place, so much to see, eat and enjoy..
Me too i love chinoire
Amazing ride, especially when crossing the bridges. On my first time in Hong Kong I travelled from the airport by Airport Express train, but then my local friends advised me to go by bus next time, so I went by A41 from Sha Tin and it was amazing, much better experience than the train.
+Jiří Vít and the Airport Express is ridiculously expensive. Though you can have a discount by using it as a commuter train early in the morning in alternate to MTR, but only in certain hours.
Jiří Vít hhh
A really good ride! I've traveled like that to HKG Airport almost twenty times now, the night view of Hong Kong is really beautiful. Going there soon.
Fascinating video, thanks for showing.Hope to be there next year.
One of the most scenic airport drives. Thanks for the upload!
at 0:33 to begin out tour the bus departs the Hong Kong Toll Plaza and enters Portal 1 of the Western Harbor Tunnel which will take the bus to Exit 2 of the Kwai Chung Expressway and Kowloon. 3:50 after dropping off passengers the bus heads to the Kwai Chung Expressway 6:20 after a few minutes the bus exits Route 3 and the Kwai Chung Expressway and enters the ramp of Route 8. the road goes for a mile as the bus heads to Stonecutter Bridge. 9:10 the bus now crosses Stonecutter Bridge and enters Portal 2 of Nam Wan Tunnel before entering a ramp to cross onto Tsing Ma Bridge and the Lantau Link on its original alignment. 14:25 the bus now crosses Tsing Ma Bridge and the Lantau Link before crossing the Kap Shui Mun Bridge onto Lantau. (note vehicle traffic is prohibited in Ma Won Village you must take a rickshaw beyond the corkscrew in Park Island to be allowed access.) 17:55 the bus is now on the Lantou Express only 30 miles to the airport. 30:10 the bus crosses over the Tung Chung Channel Welcome to Hong Kong International Airport.

Really good.
Hong Kong is a beautiful national
Hong Kong is currently a "special region" administered by a Chinese administrator under the terms of a treaty with the UK before their withdrawal. However 20 years on there are suspicions that the timeline of the treaty is not being followed by the Communist Party,

is that structure at 2.57 a toolbooth? and is DUI a common offense in HK streets?
Yes, that structure is a toolbooth, public buses and some cars don’t need to stop for it because they have applied for autotoll. And “DUI” is a foul language in Hong Kong, but it is not illegal to say it in the streets.
Hong Kong very beautiful city
Because 100% British design and construction, thank you UK so much😘
viry nice
Is it true that you cannot drop off luggage in advance if you do not go by train? When I went by train, I dropped off my luggage in either Kowloon or Hong Kong island train to airport station.
woodensurfer It is true, passengers have to pay first before dropping off their luggage at the luggage rack of the bus.

Hong Kong is a city in China that attracted a lot of tourists in the past, but there have been too many violent protests in Hong Kong recently. Tourists are not recommended to stay in Hong Kong. Lives do not go on perfectly in Hong Kong recently. Many shop owners opt to close their shop during protests. Some shopping malls close during protests. I believe shopping is one of the popular activities for tourists so they can be affected. Tourists generally stay in city centre and tourists can be affected by riots at city centres (There are more than one busy commercial districts in Hong Kong and all are common riot area). Riots take place near hotels. The fact is that even if you choose a hotel far away from city centre such as those in Tuen Mun and Yuen Long district, you can still see protests. Unless the tourist concerned is very interested in politics, I see no reason for him/her to visit Hong Kong for leisure at present. Objectively speaking, Hong Kong is a city tourists should avoid. One more pieces of information: in some riots, somebody set a fire at railway stations and damaged the stations. On the fifth of October, all railway services except Airport Express suspended.
