Two thoughts; 1/ Smaller calibers may be lethal at lower speeds than large calibers, due to less surface area to disperse the force (higher penetration). 2/ It's probably important to simulate one or two layers of clothing, like GT did in his "How deadly are shotguns?" video.

Can somebody calculate the „muzzle energy“ from the slingshot? I mean: it managed 153 fps with the whole hollow point round. Some american friends know how much the whole round weighs? Edit: If the first rounds are 115gr hollow point - the whole round might be around 185-190gr (60gr brass, 5-6gr. blackpowder - 5gr primer) therefore: Slingshot - 13,02 Joule
Wow, this was really interesting to see. Was playing paintball yesterday in Poland and there we were allowed to play with 280 fps. Here in Germany, 214 is the legal limit. Nice chronograph by the way. Would be pretty exciting to see the velocity of bigger calibers. And the slingshot was a cool alternative, to show, how much power you can produce with something other than a firearm. As always, Greetings from Germany.
here in colorado, usa we can play paintball at 400fps... i used to have a fully modded smartparts ion and customized halo reloader and could shoot it 39 balls per second..... when we would blow the whistle to start, id just point toward enemy spawn and 5 seconds after the whistle i would be reloading..... lol. good old days.... believe me when the enemy hears 200 paintballs hosing around them at 400 fps the tend to push less aggressively........ lmao
Another thing to consider is that human flesh can stretch quite a bit, pork shoulder that has the skin and fat on it can do a really good job at demonstrating it. This was a really cool video, I have often wondered about this very thing. Especially with pellet guns
If i remember correctly the old 2 inch 38 special revolver round were around 700 fps. Plenty of lethal hits from those pistols over the years. I also recall an incident where a man was hit in the forehead and the bullet did not penetrate but lodged under the skin over bone. I recall hearing of several more where the bullet traveled around the skull following the bone after an oblique hit in the forehead area. Myth busters did a couple episodes on ballistic, mostly falling rounds and iirc they decided a projectile would have to be going over 200 fps to break skin.
Scott, to complete your journey in the big bore world, I believe you need to get your hands on a .500 Bushwhacker revolver. It is said to be twice as powerful as .500 S&W Magnum given comparable barrel lengths. Top that off with a .600 Overkill rifle, which is said to be the most powerful round capable of being fired from a standard hunting action.
Fantastic experiment Scott! Thanks for incorporating the chronograph for accuracy sake. Thanks for all of your hard work making content! Cheers from Alberta, Canada 🍻
Very interesting results. The average velocity out of a two to three inch barrel pocket 9mm is 850 to 900 fps so this was good results at fifteen to twenty feet for self defense. The 4 gauge is a cannon and you know Scott pulled the table, that thought it escaped, out of the woods, and drove over it with his truck. Silly table should have stayed in the trees. No table escapes the Wrath of Scott.
In Canada, it's not just the FPS of the projectile but also the energy that dictates wether something is a firearm or not. I've always heard that anything 500fps or more is considered lethal, but that probably depends on the overall mass of the projectile. A 12 gauge slug traveling at 500fps is probably lethal at close range. I think there are too many factors to consider. That's just my two cents.
Thanks for the educational video, Scott~! Table Disposal Query: What would happen if you dragged the table across the big pond? Sure... you'd need a good 300 feet of rope to find out... but would the table simply skid across the surface, or break apart as soon as an edge forced it to dip under the surface?
Really interesting question, learned ballistics when i was a kid because i heard so many urban myths and hunting myths too, nice to see people debunking most of them lol
I am very interested to see a destructive comparison(zombie torso and other targets) between the the Brown Bess musket from the revolutionary war period, Kentucky long rifle, and something civil war era with a Minie' Ball(Springfield Model 1861). Compare those to a 12, 10, and 4 gauge.....and if your shoulder is still functional after it, the 4 bore. Thanks for another Great Video!

Fantastic idea for a video I’ve always wondered this. While playing paintball I always figured that marbles fired out of paintball guns would be lethal but never seen it tested
Very interesting results. But could you do a follow-up video showing just at what range lethal fps is no longer lethal? Like the maximum range for 9mm before its no longer lethal?
Hey Scott, your videos are awesome. I was wondering if you could test a 338 Lapua on a zombie torso and different items to see if there's a difference between hunting vs. target ammo up close.
I've heard that a 230-grain bullet moving at 400fps is capable of producing a lethal wound. Wonder if that's true, and if clothing changes the results. I'm pretty sure it would change the results of that slingshot.
@CtrlAltRetreat Interesting. The typical less lethal bean bag round is 1.4oz of shot going around 300fps. Possibly lethal if it hits your head or chest due to blunt force trauma. I'm curious about the minimum requirements of a piercing wound that could be fatal. I guess it comes down to the point/shape of the projectile, speed, weight, and the ability to carry its mass through tissue and bone to create a fatal wound. I'd imagine a 230 grain .45acp ball round and .230 grain pointed FMJ boat tail round moving at the same speed would have different penatration results in a clothed human torso at those speeds.
12:47 This gun is sending some high borderlands 2 SMG vibes!!! Thanks for this awesome experiment Scott. I highly appreciate your results and effort :)

also a friend of mine in 1985 took his 3 screw 1873 using black powder loads slowly stepped up the charge until the bullet hit the magic 600 fps range and proved right there, the old cowboy loads were lethal at gunfighting distance "around 25 feet"!
Would love to see tests on theoretical max protection. Shield, layers of body armor, what could realistically be used and still have someone able to walk around. Always wonder what the limits of protection is. Ive seen tests on individual components but what about fully decked out gear?
Run. Every day. With gear. Be in your 20s. Workout a lot. Very doable. There's a reason teams only get fully decked out very shortly before being active and it's not for fashion. There's always a trade-off.
I know it's not your usual foray. But what about the lethality of BB guns and pellet guns that shoot in those higher FPS levels? Example, I have a pellet rifle that shoots 1200 fps, and a CO2 pistol that shoots 400 to 500 fps (depending on how fresh the tanks are and type of BB's being used)? How would these compare to the test you just ran?
I'd find that interesting too. I'm in the UK where we are only allowed up to 6ftlb energy on air pistols and 12ftlb on air rifles unless you get a firearms license. 12ftlb on an air rifle is about 600fps in .22 (5.5mm) and 800fps in .177 (4.5mm). For the air pistol at 6ftlb it's around 425fps with a .22 and 600fps with a .177. I guess though because they are a lot lighter than an actual bullet they would penetrate but not create anywhere near the same energy and would stop at minimum resistance. I think this would be really interesting to see on a zombie, furby or even better a zombie furby 😂.
@@vinnyvtec8722 Exactly! That's what I'd like to know. Having a projectile at the same fps but obviously way smaller mass. Could it be just as lethal or not?

This seemed like a lot of set up. It's nice to know the threshold of lethal force, thank you for doing the work.
Right ? Legit interesting to learn this stuff.

This is a much more advanced “pine board” test :) I remember the old days of Kentucky Ballistics when Al he sho was pine boards and big balls lol
I love when he makes the table fly 😂😂
I can't get enough of Scott yelling in excitement after a shot.
Kentucky ken just casually having 9mm pistols in 0.5 in increments 😂 got to love that determination
Two thoughts;
1/ Smaller calibers may be lethal at lower speeds than large calibers, due to less surface area to disperse the force (higher penetration).

Edit: If the first rounds are 115gr hollow point - the whole round might be around 185-190gr (60gr brass, 5-6gr. blackpowder - 5gr primer) therefore:
Slingshot - 13,02 Joule
Thats kind of slow. even 1000fps what about 3300 fps like many 5.56mm assault rifles travel?
Darn metric system.
As always, Greetings from Germany.
here in colorado, usa we can play paintball at 400fps... i used to have a fully modded smartparts ion and customized halo reloader and could shoot it 39 balls per second..... when we would blow the whistle to start, id just point toward enemy spawn and 5 seconds after the whistle i would be reloading..... lol. good old days.... believe me when the enemy hears 200 paintballs hosing around them at 400 fps the tend to push less aggressively........ lmao
Damn Germany used to be cool when that little painter with the funny mustache was in charge now it’s kind of lame.

I want Kentucky ballistics to a “how many tables to stop a elephant rifle” video
To be fair, what happened to that iPhone was an act of mercy. The fine gentleman at Home Depot was just looking out for Scooter. =P
He gets more and more brutal with the table lol 😂
Your enthusiasm every time something goes “splat” is really funny…… “AAAWWWWWWWW OHHH”
Scooter saying “cappin” was the last thing I expected to her but the only thing I needed
An actual interesting and informative video that hasn't been done before. Your best video yet.
Scott when literally anything interesting happens: “OH!!!!!”
Love to see the same test with .22lr handguns, using different grain ammo.
That table was an honest, hard-working, Scott-fearing man. Shame to see him go out like that, but that's how the world works.
Fantastic info, really enjoyed, thanks
I would love a compilation of everytime Scott says "Here we go!"
Thanks for the educational video, Scott~!
Table Disposal Query: What would happen if you dragged the table across the big pond? Sure... you'd need a good 300 feet of rope to find out... but would the table simply skid across the surface, or break apart as soon as an edge forced it to dip under the surface?
Scott needs to do this

I am very interested to see a destructive comparison(zombie torso and other targets) between the the Brown Bess musket from the revolutionary war period, Kentucky long rifle, and something civil war era with a Minie' Ball(Springfield Model 1861). Compare those to a 12, 10, and 4 gauge.....and if your shoulder is still functional after it, the 4 bore.
Thanks for another Great Video!
That would be pretty neat

I love how Scott just skipped over the mag falling out when he shot the 4 inch barrel.
This would be interesting
The answer is every round is lethal until you can't reliably hit. See garand thumbs 22lr video.
@@XIGRIMxREAPERIX but at what range is that?

Hey Scott, your videos are awesome. I was wondering if you could test a 338 Lapua on a zombie torso and different items to see if there's a difference between hunting vs. target ammo up close.
Your so awesome man. I really appreciate all the work you do for our entertainment.
I've heard that a 230-grain bullet moving at 400fps is capable of producing a lethal wound. Wonder if that's true, and if clothing changes the results. I'm pretty sure it would change the results of that slingshot.
Mass makes a huge difference and 230 is near double the typical 9mm. Even a rock can be lethal at throwing speeds just on mass
At 800fps that 147 bullet was generating around 200 foot pounds of energy. The same energy that a .380acp pistol generates. Definitely lethal
If you use hot 380+p it can get around 290
I always load .357 in my .380

Absolutely love the video Scott keep up the amazing work 😊
also a friend of mine in 1985 took his 3 screw 1873 using black powder loads slowly stepped up the charge until the bullet hit the magic 600 fps range and proved right there, the old cowboy loads were lethal at gunfighting distance "around 25 feet"!
Scott that was one amazing video I really enjoyed that 😁
Would love to see tests on theoretical max protection. Shield, layers of body armor, what could realistically be used and still have someone able to walk around. Always wonder what the limits of protection is. Ive seen tests on individual components but what about fully decked out gear?

You used the whole bullet+casing with the slingshot, it would be nice to see just the bullet next time. Great video!

Very entertaining, great as always. The velocity definitely plays a part, but the weight of the projectile does too.
Your a genius! Derp
kinda of, speed is more important then weight. dont matter how heavy it is if it isnt moving fast enough to matter.
@@5150warpighis point is probably towards the 800 fps being lethal with the 9mm but nothing crazy, but a 45 acp is incredibly lethal at around that velocity because it is heavier
@@5150warpig
force=mass x acceleration
Both speed and weight equally matter. Doesn’t matter if it penetrates or not, it could still be lethal.
But there are more factors to consider like how the force is applied, surface area, etc
@@shaneh7519 its mass X velocity X velocity, . so any increase in velocity is multiplied 4 times. where mass is a 1-1 increase. so speed matter mores.
