This excites the free electrons present in the air gap and these free electrons start moving at tremendous speed and starts to hit the gas atoms. As a result more electrons are knocked off from the atoms. Thus a Plasma channel is formed which is highly conductive. And the resistance of plasma to the flow of electric current causes the heat of arc.
