I'm 40 years old and went to highschool at Grady in Atlanta, the real ATL which is Fulton county and I just shed a tear listening to this. There was tons of rap music and hip-hop that was beautiful during that time but this album reasonates with me the most because it was all about our culture and lifestyle that we were living here in the city. This album guided me through my worst time as a teen and guided me through my better days. Soul Food by Goodie MOB, ATLiens by Outkast and Wu-Tang Forever were the quintessential hip hop albums for me as a child.
After graduating culinary school....I made it my business to volunteer and feed those a restaurant quality meal for those who can't afford a meal. Food for free to feed the soul; Inspiration cafe you rock!!!!
+tonadoff Aquemini, while a great album, was commercial. ATLiens and Soul food ARE two of the best Hip Hop albums period. This coming from a NY head. Goodie Mob were way ahead of their time back in '95.
No necessarily. Those first two albums had a more authentic SW Atlanta sound that nobody had introduced to the world yet. Plus the stuff they were talking about . Aquemini sounded more mainstream. They experimented with different sounds and styles. ATLiens and Soul Food still rank as my favorite from the south.
Yep I agree...this album was so enjoyable but also spoke of problems of the world. Even this song had two meanings...while it's about hitting all the great food joints in Atlanta, it's also speaking spiritually. Amazing album that I could play the entire album and not get bored...
I love how hard the rap is, but with a sensitive message, talking of REAL shit, not bragging about shooting, killing, money.... they talk of strife - difficult times, monotony and indignity of a minimum wage job, AND the good times, family, friends, food, being thankful, knowing things SHOULD be better and we deserve better but at the moment we're stuck with some shit in our situation, but also some beautiful friends and family and food to break up the bad times, and making it all worth it, keeping oneself GRATEFUL FOR WHAT YOU GOT.
I hate when people say this.... It's just ignorant, because there's still so much great creative rap out there with a good message. Of course there's more bullshit, but that's just because now there's more hip-hop music in general.
