Lejeune made me glow in the dark. Ramadi made me heat intolerant. The Corps got me out of rural Ohio, and gave me a future; for that, I am grateful. Rah, GySgt.

I heard soldiers gripe about not being able to wait until they could get out - and then were lost when they did. Your career is what you make it. You can change your MOS. Deployments are hard, yes. Every job has it's challenges. There will always be coworkers/bosses that drive you crazy on the outside too. Basic training made me realize exactly what I had in me! 💪🏼🇺🇸

I agree with your complete list 👍, I'll add as a disabled Army veteran, the camaraderie you get from sharing the tough times with others is a big one. I will always appreciate a hot shower and a quiet neighborhood 👌.

All true facts, plus, as somebody also pointed out, the camaraderie, the brotherhood the survives for the duration of one's life!
I'm from Europe and the military service has the same benefits here with some variations and except the health insurance due to our different systems.
If you want to change bases you go and stay in the MoD and, if at some point you want to settle for family reasons, you can go for the military service in within the military units of the Interior Affairs Ministry - no quite an easy job, but it can be done. I started as a para and changed my MOS to Firefighting. Even so you get to go to different courses and classes or in support for the units across the country when emergency situations arise.
Some units have newer buildings, some are old since before the 2ndWW - I've worked in a para base that used to be a cavalry unit before the 2ndWW and later in a firehouse that used to be a former prison since the same period in such a shape that I really missed the old cav barracks.
But sleeping in ditches or on the barren ground at freezing temperatures, swimming in mud or surrounded by flooded places made me very resilient and mostly appreciative for a dry place to sit, to sleep, to have that warm and quiet place you talked about.
And as a reserved soldier I enjoy every single moment of peace, frredom of speech and, above all, freedom to travel. Of course that a big bonus is the fact that now I have plenty of time to spend with the kids and be there for my family!

I always told my juniors who were complaining their pay isn't good. I would always say, "Just look at what you don't have to pay for." Rent/mortgage and medical/dental insurance is a huge bill that you never had to worry about.

I had friend from Radcliff KY, just right outside Ft Knox. He ended up in basic/AIT at Ft. Knox. He was a tanker, and there was only one tank company at Ft Knox at the time, so it would be extremely unlikely that he would get stationed there. He got stationed at Knox.

You forgot one of the benefits - being able to say you are a Marine.
The traveling and adaptability - as a kid we moved every three to four years, a few times during the school year. Even after my father retired, my parents continued to move; I think the longest they stayed anywhere was six years. And good or bad, even late in my adult life I still exhibit traits of a military brat.

So, I am heading to my Basic Miltary Training on April 1 due to National Service. I am from Singapore so I have to serve. I hope for cooperative buddies and caring but strict commanders who do punish at right times. I aim to enter Officer Cadet School afterwards. While our military might be different, I enjoy watching you on your experience as a soldier as a career. I have some inclination to become a regular but I will need to experience my days as a recruit and cadet first.

Nick I’ve enjoyed watching your videos, but ever since “Masters of the Air” came out on Netflix I haven’t been able to get over your uncanny resemblance to Irish actor Anthony Boyle, who played the perpetually airsick navigator Harry Crosby. Have any of your friends noticed the resemblance? Have *you* noticed it?
