Extrafloral nectaries are said to be produced when a plant is under stress. It’s supposedly produced to attract ants when the plant is being attacked by a pest. That’s being said my philos just produce it a lot. Maybe because my plants are in way lower humidity then they should be. Only way I’ve found to prevent it from staining/burning through the leaves is by regularly showering/washing the plants. Which I guess makes sense since they usually grow in rainforests. But definitely a pain as a hobbyist lol
Have you heard of Edema in plants? I think it might be that, because that’s an humidity/watering related issue
@@jujuuu1 yeah I know what you’re referring to but from my understanding extrafloral nectaries aren’t caused by that. In fact the only plants I have that I’ve ever seen edema on are ones that I’ve never seen produce extrafloral nectaries (syngonium macrophyllum and monstera deliciosa). But just about all my philos produce extrafloral nectaries
@@sydneyrocks1999 that’s interesting! I haven’t seen extrafloral nectaries on my plants so far, but my p. verrucosum has Edema
@@jujuuu1 oh that is interesting. It seems like a thing everyone who has philos in Vegas has to deal with. I feel like every couple of weeks there’s someone asking what the little dots of sap are on their philos in our local group lol. I’ve seen EFN on splendids, micans, dean mcdowell, el choco, verrucosum, and probably some others. But zero signs of pests (even under a microscope) and the plants grow fast and leaves look perfect except for the sap spots. Vegas’ humidity is basically non existent and I don’t use humidifiers/cabinets/greenhouses which is why I think it plays an effect in the “stress” that may be causing it to be produced. And I’ve seen other people in forums/channels theorize the same thing. Charmain (may have butchered the spelling of her name) on unplantparenthood has talked about how her philos outside of cabinets sometimes produce EFN for no reason as well. So definitely seems to be a philo thing more than any other genus
@@sydneyrocks1999 Wow crazy, thanks for all the information! I am from Germany and have never heard from it before (although I wouldn't say that we have particularly high humidity)
Linearis..2 leaf cuttings in prop box with moss..under grow light...heat mat on low
I worked at a cactus nursery and we would tape our fingers with masking tape, it works well. I never had sore fingers. If you need to move it you can add several layer of newspaper around the bulkiest part of the plant.
I’ve had the best luck rooting linearis directly in soil, just misting daily until they feel rooted then slow down on watering. It’s definitely one of my favorite hoyas, so unique and beautiful!
I'm loving seeing the final leaves of the season coming in. A lot of my Alocasia are currently putting out new leaves. Checking out the new growth is the first thing I do every day. 💚
Just got my de la tanks mix in the mail, so I am potting plants with you 🥺🥺
I'm a plant semi newbie. Finally not killing my plants from ignorance. New sub.
I have a aloe, philodendron, pothos,a snake plant and a echeveria.
They're all alive!
I'm a plant mommy!!
Woo!! So glad to hear that! 😍
My very busy micans is doing that super spotty nectar thing. 👀
Sooo many of my plants are putting out new leaves right now and my Hoyas are all going crazy!! Love it! You have a beautiful collection 💚
Hey becca! I have a philodendron Florida that puts out nectar and it’s damaged the leaves (before it attracted pests 🥴) I just wipe them off and I’ve found the leaves grow a lot faster once I’ve done that. I’m also not sure if it’s related but I think they also attract those mites that really love Hoya so have a look out for that. I have my suspicions is all 👀 but it also could be due to the direct sun hitting it as mine are in a similar position to yours. My birthdays coming up and your collection is one of the ones that always inspire me!
I live in the high desert above Los Angeles @2700'. My growing season here is October thru May or June. I built a 6'x4'x6' high greenhouse with PVC & shower curtains, to have my perpetual summer🥰
Yes after spraying sulphur on my Hoyas, lots of new leaves! 😊🪴
Woohoo!!
I transitioned my linearis and sunrise to PON (they had root rot) and have 100% success rooting cuttings in fluval stratum(it needs to be spayed daily to keep moist)...
Have you checked your roots to the linearis and polyneura? It looks like my leaves looked when I had root rot.
I used the heat mat under an old aquarium it also makes the perfect place for rehab plants...my Hoyas all thrive in that space until rooted then acclimated to room air.
Cuttings in fluval stratum then transitioned to PON once the roots were established.
I think your linnearis may just need more water / humidity. I keep mine in my bathroom all winter in an east facing window, hung from my shower curtain bar. It lives outside on my screened in porch all summer, so it’s flowering right now because it got bright light from an indirect east / south light situation since June.

I saw a hack where they used a piece of split drinking straw to support a broken stem. I’ve been moving plants inside, inspecting and treating. Also getting timers for grow lights set up and grouping some plants to help with humidity. The nectar issue probably explains the leaf damage on my adonsonii since there are no pests. It’s only on one leaf but I see some shiny areas on others so maybe a good wipe down is in order. It’s growing like crazy up a pole but the leaves aren’t getting any bigger yet.
#1 Buying a Pellet Stove so no more chilly nights from having to turn heat down to save fuel - humidity going 24-7 ,used scotch tape for broken stems and it 99% of the time as long as a thread of tissue is left . Funny when it heals it’s stronger and thicker in that spot . Tfs
It’s so cool to see as it was still warm but not super hot like summer everything started growing like crazy and blooming!! Now that it’s getting colder I can see things are slowing down ❤
The crystals on the backs of the leafs are Edema and it can happen due to irregular watering. As far as I understood it the cells of the leafs burst because of water pressure from within the plant, but I’m not 100% sure anymore if I remember it correctly. My verrucosum has this too, but without those brown spots that your plants have. I wasn’t able to get rid of it tho
Philodendron definitely produce extrafloral nectaries normally (my Micans does it all the time) but it can be a sign that a plant is under attack. My verrucosum recently started producing a lot and it had broad mite. That’s those invisible mites you can only see with a magnifier. They were little dots when viewed with a 40x loupe. It took a 200x phone magnifying lens to see them properly. So I recommend checking your plant with the strongest magnifier you have.
I love jumping spiders! :)
Same! I always let them live haha
Hi Becca, your plants look so good! I love that they are still putting out new growth. Quite a few of mine are still growing, too. In my grow room I have two humidifiers and a circulating fan, i keep the humidity around 65 to 70 percent and the temperature about 67 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and they are so happy!
Is good to be prepared for the changes,i use a heater aswell in the cold seasons in Sydney,I’m sure your plants will do ok,like the last winter👍
💚🌵🌱☘️
You have such cool plants! You’re a great plant mom :)
My monstera deliciosa just pushed out a few new leaves that have mid rib fenestration! I am super excited to see it!
One of my linearus JUST did the same thing. I literally just cut it last night. I think mine had the stems dry up from soil level (you said “became woody”, which is how mine looked but turns out they were just dried out and dead) I cut down where they were healthy and green, stuck the ends in a new pot of soil and stuck it in high humidity and high light. I dont know if it’s going to be able to reroot with such LOOOONG strands to support, but we’ll see. 🤞🏻. I think I let it get too dry between waterings
I was going to say that , linearis loves lots of moisture I don’t even let mine dry out more then 60-70% and I use coco with pumice
@@brooklin_bernek I’m going to up my watering on my remaining one and fingers crossed the chopped one reroots 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Most of my plants are putting out new leaves too! I just took the big giant ones out for a deep water and pest spray. I am starting this months watering and pest preventative today- just insecticidal soap then neem oil and I water with mosquito bit tea mixed with azamax.
I already have my oil space heater out in the plant room, and I’m trying the humidifiers again this winter. Still not sold on them. What’s crazy is the basement is damp and we have a dehumidifier down there but the sunroom is bone dry and I need humidifiers. If the basement had windows or light or room for a plant area, I’d put the plants down there with grow lights. It 6 of one half dozen of the other.
Love your Thaumatophyllum spruceanum! Mine lives in water but just unfurled a new leaf! She only has 7 lobes.
🎉🎉Go Regale leaf💖💖. Love the baby Hoya leaves 💓💓Great update 🥰😘
My philos put out the sticky stuff to, like even on the stem, someone told me pest, and someone’s said thrips but I didn’t see anything and I feel like thrip damage is super obvious but I I did treat for a month and it still does it so now I just think it’s normal, and now I just water with that 209 stuff you posted about! (: your plants look great❤️
Just considering everything else I’m reading and hearing from Hoya lovers… might not be a bad idea to check for the dreaded flat mites just to be sire
I really enjoyed this video your space is so beautiful
I was just typing out my comment saying the propagation method is air layering when you remembered. You obovata new leaves definitely look a lot bigger than they did! This is my first winter with grow lights since I moved from a house with huge east and west facing windows to a basement apartment. So I'm curious to see how my plants do with the grow lights. Also, we have baseboard heating which concerns me since many of the plants are near two of the heaters. I'll probably try to use those heaters as infrequently as possible.
My glorious has nectar and spot damage from it too!
Looks like the sulfur treatment was a success 🙌
My biggest prettiest most perfect verrucosum leaf to date got totally burnt from me letting the extra floral nectaries sit on the back of the leaf close to a grow light without cleaning it off. I was devastated lol. Now I'm constantly wiping the back of my philodendron leaves so it doesn't sit on there and deteriorate/burn them. I'm thinking the light it was getting made the burn spots a whole bunch worse because it's the leaf closer to the light that got damaged the most.
Hey Becca! Some of my philos seem to do the same thing with the nectaries that yours do. I’ve noticed that the tend to turn more brown the brighter and more intense their light is. It’s been a fine line trying to find that happy medium🤦🏼♀️
Nice plants 🪴
Thanks for the video.
@12:42, no answer from me. But the new leaves on my scindapsus treubii has that flaky translucent deposit on them, too. Also, same discoloration on the older leaves that I thought were pest related but they haven't developed new areas of damage.
I'm waiting to see if the new leaves develop discoloration, and am considering tossing the plant if so.
Loved this update! Thank you! 🥰
What was that other hoya with cool veining in the start of the frame? The one you didn't talk about. Thank you!!!
Lovely update!
Ive only seen my philodendron release nectar from the petioles and nodes…I’ve never seen that kind of build up on my philodendron leaves…I would treat them to be safe
Why did you spray sulfur on the hoya?
flatmites! you should check out adam's (knotdude) video on flatmites
Thank you. I remember her talking about them.
The Philodendron foot thing 😂
Your philodendron with the spots and sticky stuff is spider mites 😔 That sticky stuff is spider mite poop 🙃
I’ve checked it over and over for SM! Ugh I’ll have to look again 😵💫
@@BeccaDeLaPlants it’s so annoying, it took me FOREVER to figure out what it was, so far I’ve seen my silver sword and my ctenanthe grey star get the spider mite goo 😣
🧡 Feliz Día de los Muertos 🧡
💚💚
Thaumatophyllum spruceanum is looking dope. Love the spiraling leaves. I have a small two-leafer. Looking forward to it growing as nice as yours. Thanks for sharing!
