  • In this video I explain the dangers of turning right and demonstrate many different right turn scenarios when crossing the path of oncoming cars. This video focuses on turning from a major road to a minor road and where and when to wait at crossroads. Emerging from a minor road will be a explained in a different video.

I watched these videos for my driving test in Sweden and everything seems to more or less apply over here too. You were one of the biggest reasons I passed my test and are also responsible for me learning clutch control properly. I had the problem where the car that I drove in my driving school would move off without gas (even on steep hills), so you can imagine my shock when my little 19 year old 1.6 L Golf would stall everytime I wanted to move off.
I passed my test almost a year ago and I've kept watching since then mostly for entertainment, but I guess It's also good to get a refresher every once in a while.
Thank you for the good videos Richard!

When I started out with a manual, I was always worried that I was making these kinds of turns too slowly, which only made things more difficult as I tried to race trough the gears. But then I had an opportunity to drive an automatic again, and I realized my starts had always been nice and easy, there's no reason to mash the throttle, and that most of my problems driving a manual just stemmed from anxiety.

1:47 were to wait (when the middle line is in line with mirror)
3:12 If you are turning right on our road do not go near the middle as there isn’t enough space
3:35 turning on a bend(bring the car to near stop and go into gear one as it’s safer)
3:55 waiting areas, don’t ever go to the end
5:05 if your turn to early and finish on the right it’s a serious fault
Always look right when turning right
6:55 turning right with right filter light and traffic light without filter lights
When turning right, If you have a green light then the traffic across probably also has a green light
8:17 yellow box junctions, Only use when you’re turning right and your exit is clear
10:33 turning right at smaller crossroads, go offside to offside as it’s too small for nearside and you’ll end up on the wrong side of the road
WAIT BEFORE THE CROSSROADS IN THIS CASE
    11:24 GIVE WAY LINE

Hi Richard. Im from the Philippines and I have been binge watching your videos for the past 2 months and I can say I went from zero driving experience to being very confident on the street with a manual petrol car. The most important things that I have learned from you is gas first before clutch release and using handbrake for uphill starts. From there, my life changed. So many things still to learn. I don't know how to give back to you but subscribing is the least that I can do. Keep doing what you are doing and again, a big thanks!

Today I was at a 4 way junction with lights. I was turning right but the oncoming traffic who were also turning right came 3/4 of the length of the entire yellow box and not half way. This gave me no opportunity to turn right before the oncoming traffic because by the time I attempted to reach the centre, I was blocked by a big Merc flashing it's lights. He then signalled me to go to the right hand side of his flow of traffic, (as the highway code suggests, but as you mentioned is a bad idea). This then left a standing line of traffic for me to get through in order to turn right, even if I crept forward, I physically could not see the traffic going straight. So I pulled out slowly but even then, the oncoming car was forced to slam on the brakes, and I had no choice but to boot it to take my opportunity to turn right. The initial confusion over the oncoming turning right traffic led the traffic to stand still which in turn led to a dangerous crawling and peeking situation at a completely blind spot. I felt terrible about this as I'm on a provisional license and it really knocked my confidence. But this video shows me that regardless of the highway code, traffic turning right at junctions should always wait at the middle and not veer over to the left thus blocking the turning right lane of opposite direction traffic who are also turning right, (me). Thanks for the informative video.

This was very helpful. Failed first time due to not waiting for green arrow for the right turn facing oncoming car. Didn't understand the difference between right turn at traffic light. Now, I do, if no green arrow, then oncoming cars are moving as well, so have to wait.
Also used to stop for seconds before turning right even if no oncoming car. Now, I understand I don't need to and I understand when to start steering and looking into the right side of the road. Very helpful. Thanks

I've actually been driving for around 5 years but had a bad experience just after passing my test when turning right at a crossroads - sometimes I like to have a search to see what the professionals say (specifically to do with turning nearside to nearside or offside to offside). It's all about continuous improvement and learning to drive certainly doesn't stop after passing your test!

In Europe you turn AFTER oncoming vehicle which also is turning same way from opposite direction so you can see other oncoming cars, otherwise if you both stop you both blocking each other from seeing full traffic. So any words you pass other car to leave him behind and only concentrate on other following cars. This applies to larger roads with waiting area on narrow roads with small traffic you can make it in a front of each other
Driving on the other side doesn't really matter as turning left is a same as turning right over here etc.
Obviously sometimes you have guide lanes to follow to avoid confusion especially on larger few lanes roads.

I find most of your videos extremely helpful, thank you, but I just wanted to say that at almost all of the traffic light controlled junctions around where I drive in Tottenham and Wood Green in North London you are supposed to turn offside/offside rather than nearside/nearside as you show in this video. If I tried to turn nearside/nearside ie in front of other oncoming vehicles turning right I would cause a lot of problems! So my point is that some areas are obviously quite different to others in this regard.

I've not driven around there, that's interesting as I've not really come across places where people are using crossroads offside to offside and I drive around a lot of the country. Definitely do what is the norm for the junction.

Hey Richard. I love your videos, so thanks! I have moved to the UK from North America. I got my license in Ontario, Canada, but have also lived and driven in the US. As a new driver to the UK, I have a couple of questions regarding turning right.
    1. I was always taught when turning left (right in the UK) that you should not turn your wheels whilst waiting for oncoming traffic. The reason for this is that if someone hits you from behind a minor incident can become a head-on collision if you are pushed into oncoming traffic. You don't discuss this in your video, although your diagrams do show the car turning right has turned their wheels. I have also seen other videos where UK instructors tell their student to turn their wheels. What is your opinion on this and why?
    2. In Ontario it is illegal to turn into any lane except the lane you are coming from. For example, to take the UK equivalent, if I am turning right into 3 lanes from the right hand lane, I would get a ticket in Canada if I turned into other than the far right lane. I could then change lanes once I have safely turned if I need to be in a different lane. The main reason for this is to allow those turning right (left in the UK) from the opposite direction to turn at the same time into their lane with no chance of collisions. It appears that the guidance in the UK is completely different. Could you please clarify the rules in the UK and the reasoning?
    Thanks again!!!

It is better to wait with your wheel straight, I generally do this myself but not always. Depends now difficult the turn it. I'm not quite sure about question 2, but you can change lane whenever you like as long as it's legal and currently safe.

@@ConquerDriving Thanks! I ask about which lane to turn into because I have seen videos of mock tests from other instructors who have given advisories or faults if the driver did not turn right into the far left lane. That made me think it was a rule!

Hello Richard, I have learnt a lot from your videos, and first of all a big thank you. I am a novice driver, and a couple of weeks ago while I was driving on a main road, a car suddenly turned right from a minor road and almost hit me head on, if I hadn't braked at all. I was lucky because the car behind me wasn't too fast or it would have bumped into my car. I would like to know what can I do in the future to avoid getting a collision with drivers who suddenly emerge from a minor road? I am writing from Auckland, New Zealand. Thank you very much😊

I'm sorry to hear that. There isn't a lot you can do but be slower when you can see junctions that will have a poor view for the car emerging.

I have a question. I've noticed at some junctions the right lane is only for turning right and the left lane is both for turning left and going straight, however on other hand, there are junctions where the right lane is both for turning right and going straight and the left is only for turning left. Sometimes you can't see the road markings as the traffic is on them. I'm asking if there's a hint or good rule of thumb at such junctions as to which lane to take when going straight? I know it's easier when turning right or left.
I'm new in the UK and find junctions very confusing when going through straight.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  2 года назад +2

Sometimes there is a sign to warn you but not always. Most are left lane for ahead but unfortunately poor road signs and markings are a big problem on the UK's roads.

Loved this video, thank you so much for your detailed work.
I have a very dumb question tho. I almost never notice the little waiting box when I have to turn right. Instructor saying turn right, and I just want to follow my lane, sometimes because of the traffic, I can't even see there will be a waiting box. Would be logical just to carry on and turn right when you can. Is it any trick I can use here? Because I feel like if I am going to fail, I am going to fail on not going to the waiting box in time, and I will be stuck on the left hand lane.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  2 года назад

If you don't go into the waiting box don't turn right as your position will be misleading and people other people behind may decide to use the box and pass you. This could be dangerous. Reading the road markings is a very important part of driving.

On a signal junction, I positioned myself in the middle waiting for oncoming traffic to clear.
In few seconds the light turned Amber & then red, after which I cleared the junction & completed the right turn.
However, while waiting in the middle i did notice signal camera flashing & taking pictures.
Please let me know why that would happen. It’s really stressful as I have had my full license for only 2 months.

What's important is you position yourself to the right of your lane if there is room. Then try to spend as little time on the wrong side of the road as possible, so you generally turn quite late.

What in case if I have green light on that weird junction yeah. Everyone else have red light. As I approach the first 2 cars still stationary, then is junction I want to right turn in with yellow box but only on right lane and there is a car behind the box. When I was getting by the first 2 cars they were still stationary but as soon as I started running right the car behind yellow box started moving forward from stationary and crushed into me. My question is there was no way for me to know if their light change to green as it was behind my back. at the moment when I started turning cars were still stationery waiting.should she let me finish my junction or is it my fault? The thing is also There was a yellow box so should she go into it even though car in front of box even if started moving a split second after I passed him by didn't clear it completly

What do you do if you are turning right into a side road but the part of the side road you are entering is blocked by stationary traffic and there is a car coming out of the side road waiting to turn right?
If you were to stop at the line which is in the middle of the blocked side road you are entering then you would be preventing the car coming out of the side road from making any progress.
Would it matter in this case if you still wait in line with the line which is middle of the side road (and prevent the other car from turning right) or should you hold back so you are not blocking the side road until the part of the side road you are entering becomes clear?

Take your time, you can proceed as long as you think it's safe but don't rush because someone flashes their lights. Check the relevant mirrors for the direction you're about to turn if you feel you need to but mostly look where you're going.

If you covered it and I skipped it, sorry....
Turning right from an intersection onto a two lane road (carriageway?) Folks in the uk seem to turn into the left lane more often, which means that less folk waiting to turn are able to do so. Growing up in Canada if we turned left in similar then we would turn into the left lane which meant drivers turning right knew they were safe to turn into the right lane. If I have confused my lefts and rights I'm sorry 😅 but wtf? Why the need to make wide turns and not allow others to safely turn when it's entirely possible to do so?
