Congratulations on your first singlehanded journey. Getting out of the marina and back in successfully are big milestones for any singlehanded sailor - getting the sails up and switching off the engine will put a spring in your step for months! Well done

Good man! Inspiring - the 36 looks like the perfect boat. I bet that first sail was terrifying but amazing. I would have done exactly as you did, down wind, just the main and minimal trimming. But this is more than your sail boat - it’s your man cave and home away from home. It’s your new life!

No time to be scared. Should take it into the open water . It's only fear itself your boat won't sink. Go for it.

I'd cut that cable about 30cm from the radio plug then fed the wire from the helm and either using wego blocks or soldered heat shrink join the wires back together

Congratulations on your first solo! We have a Bav 36 2004 model in Norway, with in mast furling main sail. Ease your boom vang / telescopic kicker under the boom when employing your main sail, then the boom can rise and meet the aft corner on your sail. When the sail is out you can tighten the boom vang to keep the boom horisontal when going down wind. We have snow and ice here now, the tarp is off after easter!

Hi Jan. Thanks so much for the tip, I did wonder if I should release the vang when bringing out the main, I’ve been doing it wrong up to now so thank you. 🙏

A few months ago I had no interest in old buses or sailing, living near Banbury have never been on a old London bus or done any sea sailing, after watching Tim, Alan and yourself I planned this year to take our caravan to Anglesey and come on down to ride on your open top bus, sadly this will not now happen, I’m now watching your sailing videos and really enjoying them, good luck for the future.

Thanks Ed, I hope you enjoy the sailing videos as much as the the bus ones.

Nice little boat you have there! A few video ideas if/when you have time/interest:
    - Boat tour
    - Introductory 'lesson' to sailing (how to put up mail sail on your boat, when, how to steer, etc.)
    - Your story/journey in choosing and purchasing the boat, and ongoing expenses
    - Trip plans (if any)
    - and of course some small or large excursions!

Thanks for the ideas, will cover all your suggestions in future videos.

The Daily Mirror did plans for the Mirror Dinghy, and Dad built one when I was a kid. Loved it, but wish it gad been a Laser 2 with a foresail, as it was a few more years before I even heard of telltales, let alone what they were used for. Still, for new Sailors, a Croatian guy has done a brilliant introduction to Sailing on his RUclips channel, in English, the channel is Igor Stropnik and the video is how to Sail, no RYA fees required, and for those new to Sailing, it is brilliant and worth passing around - though Sailing to Croatia has been added to my places to visit now, as a result of his other videos, pretty sure Igor does Training , Charter Yacht Skippering, boat deliveries and such too Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍⛵️ eta fixed typos

Getting new kit for the boat is always fun. 👌 Any plans on a Cockpit Bimini David ? given our Welsh Weather - if you can't see the hills, it's raining, if you can see the hills, it's going to rain lol - I'm down in South West Wales now, not that far from Fishguard and the Haven, though have done most of my Sailing out of Cardiganshire, born in Pembrokeshire, I'm a Naturalised Cardi, and refuse to use the inflicted on Cardi's without their approval, the rebrand to Ceredigion. Cardi's are very Proud people, and I love them to bits. 👍⛵️ Bob.

It's always a good idea to give Diesel engines a nice run under load David, they love being used and it helps keep their insides in good order. Worth adding the injector cleaner additive now and again, plus of course that anti diesel eating bug additive. Your engine does sound nice, I must admit, and diesel engines tend to have a very good character that develops with use by a friendly partner (the owner of the engine, a good partner, and diesels seem to just get better and better with regular use). 👍⛵️

Suggestion-- don't use autofocus for most shots. During the radio installation / trial fit, the focus jumps to the radio since it is closest to the lens. Then, as you move the radio into the cut hole, focus (eventually) adjusts. Best to set focal length to the target area, and leave it.

    • @sailingmadness
      @sailingmadness  2 года назад +1

Thank you Roger. Yes I know the focus was all over the place, I will take on-board your suggestion next time. 👍

Congratulations!! I know how elated you are as I had my first solo sail in October last year. Mine was somewhat easier as the marina in Corfu (Gouvia) has no locks or tide to negotiate!
    Well done 👏

Congrats! Well done!! I was in your shoes a few years ago. I was also nervous and thrilled at the same time. Sailing single handed just gets better and better with more time with your boat on the water. Enjoy your boat and time on the water! :)

I would have checked the SWR match to make sure that the coax didn't have any water ingress. Having the most power out is key. You don't want to burn out the finals.

You might want to re-check your new radio's transmit. I noticed you had the expected feedback when you transmitted with the hand-held, but not the other way around when you transmitted with the one in the boat. It might simply be that the new transmitter was swamping the handheld (try on low power), but my gut feel says there's still a problem with the microphone's audio. Also worth checking what the new radio reports for signal strength, to be sure the antenna connection is good.
Congrats on the First Sail! Definitely a right of passage.

Hi Laurence, Firstly I did a comp crew course, then I passed my day skipper theory and practical, all with the RYA. I have also spent time crewing on other peoples yachts. But trust me it’s a completely different kettle of fish when you skipper your own yacht. 😂😂

@@sailingmadness it absolutely is. On other persons boats: super chill, biggest problem is where the beer is stored.
First time solo on own boat: hands shaking. How do I even tie a knot?
Congratz on bringing her back again. Only going to become easier from now on.
