Great grandparents were taught at a young age how to hunt and forage And grow their own foods Which was past down to us I know being Native And French Canadian Fish, Moose, Deer, duck rabbit And other fowl, beaver Wild plants And berries (blueberry raspberry service berry etc) Grandfather had chickens for eggs And meat. No matter what it was They stored it And traded for other items like Beef, Flour, sugar salt And other .....In the states i think you call it water pie ..Up here it was sugar pie ..some milk Brown sugar water 1 egg in a pie crust And baked Was one example of making due with what you had Salads were dandelion cloves ramps And other wild plants Dad told me they had potatoes on the table every day "We had a shed with thousands of them each year in bags" Moose stew was common, Fish on sundays In 1931 The log mill near us shut down (Lack of money)..Workers still went to work for free On a agreement The company would pay out in a month or so ...1981 they sold the company And that company closed it 4 years later
