We are going to have to replace the plastic on lettuce house #1 next spring. I may do it when I put the plastic on the new greenhouse if we are up to it. 6 years is about as far as I would go with it. Its just too risky if it fails at the wrong time. Great video girls! Chuck and Darlene
@@HomegrownPassion I would replace that section as soon as possible. You could always get a piece big enough to go from the end wall and just add a section of wire channel a few feet beyond the tear and use it to seal the old side wall plastic with the piece that you used to replace the torn piece. That would be a temporary fix. I’ve done it before. I hope that makes sense. Hard to explain that... Chuck
you will love an asparagus patch, get the bare root, plant in a shallow trench with a small center mound. Place the bare root on the mound and bring side dirt to cover the roots. The first year let it grow and do not harvest to let it get well established. After the first year you bed will yield asparagus for years. I still like Martha Washington but there are Male only hybrids that yield more spikes. You can start a patch from roadside wild asparagus also. Good luck. Earl
Thank you for the info! That sounds great, and I can't wait to get some planted. I'm thinking about ordering some Martha Washington and maybe a purple kind.
Hi devon hello family loved the video and update .well all be back to normal soon thanks goodness .I use vinegar and warm water to clean plastic thankyou again devon x
I love watching your videos! Maybe an idea. about the algae, I use UV-C on our vertical nursery that works through solar panels. we have 3 tanks of 50,000 liters each and this keeps the algae growth out of the tanks by 95% because if our system becomes clogged, entire sections will be dried out.. Keep up the videos!
Thank you and that sounds like an awesome set up. I will definitely mention this to Katy. We'll probably get into this in a future video, but we were talking about how we get algae in the return pipe and are working on a way to clean it. It'd be really nice to not worry about that any more.
@@HomegrownPassion Algae spores in the main tank, was the biggest problem and concern for me. because it scatters the spores everywhere. But with a strong UV-C lamp on the last part of the return pipe, at least most of the spores will be destroyed before it goes back into the main tank, and our main tanks also have UV-C lamps. Once a week we use an omnidirectional high pressure pipe cleaner We redirect the flow for couple minutes so that dirty water does not enter our main tank and clean a pipe of about 100 meters in about 20 minutes, I do not know exactly what it is called in English but in the Netherlands they call it CS15 pipe cleaner, this is made for sewerage pipes so it cleans really well! ruclips.net/video/YSfgFLihXaQ/видео.html
The maple syrup industry uses UV lights to stabilize the sap..i think they have UV lights that let the sap pass thur a pipe..davon you might want to look into those lights.
Hi Devon, great videos lately. Enjoyed the build video especially! As far as Asparagus the Mary Washington is a best bet. I started my small patch a year ago. It's producing but will take a few years to really get going. Choose the location wisely. It will produce for 20 years. Thai basil is one of my favorites. Consider parimeter planting in garden for attracting beneficial insects & seed saving. 🍀
Awesome thank you so much! I will definitely search for that variety. I wish I would have made a patch a few years ago, but I think I found a good spot. I didn’t even think about the insects liking the basil. That will be great!
ive been reading and researching about systems like what you have cause i think the idea is great and could be profitable if wanted. one day when i can move out of the life im in now id look forward to seeing what i can do, awesome videos, they keep me wanting to learn more and wait for the next video. keep up the great work.
Thank you very much. We have seen more and more growth and interest in our products, even after the pandemic. I hope you are able to have a greenhouse some day. It is very fun and rewarding.
WOW Devon...any time you or your Mom even think about going to the gym just stay home and clean the green house or any of the other daily chores. Not sure how people live in a downtown high rise. Great job on that green house! Be careful out there.
Devon, your videos are seriously therapy for me. Thank you! How do you like the Blue Labs Controller for the reservoir management? I see a dosing pump on it which I assume is for PH management? Thank you :)
Hi Devon!!!! It looks like you’re Steers are doing well... I finally got to see them 💃🏿!!!!! Another nice video Devon... You’re a sweetheart!!!! Love to see that pretty smile 😊 ....
I have 2 types of asparagus old fashioned Mary Washington and Purple Passion. The purple one is bigger stalks and an almost nutty flavor. I love it but it is not as productive as the Mary Washington. Plus I ended up with 4 female plants of the purple so it has been self seeding and I've collected and sprouted seed. My 2 year old purple plants from seed are growing out that deep purple. The Mary Washington gives quite a few spears compared to the purple but they tend to be slightly smaller. There are 6 females and 4 male plants. The male ones do make bigger spears. Ive only got about 40 plants now with the babies I started with 10 of each. If I could go back I'd buy the purple 💜 again in a quick minute and I think I would have chosen the Jersey knight (Jersey giant maybe?) They are all male plants so supposedly make bigger spears as it doesn't feel the need to seed! I did grow seedlings of Mary Washington tho. It was very easy but it will be another year before I can harvest and 2 years before full harvest. Startingvput with the 2 year crowns is expensive but you can harvest the second year after you plant. And I know you won't slack off but goodness watch out for Chinese elm tree babies. I'm having a hard time pulling the ones that grew the year I was off sick. They are rooting to the middle of the planet! But my bed is about 12 years old now and its no where near enough for us. We just indulge during the season and maybe get a couple packs for winter in the freezer. I'd recommend 20 plants per person if you want some for canning/pickling/or freezing.
Thank you! I'm so glad to get all of this info. I ended up getting those exact kinds. My Purple Passion is coming up well, Mary Washington is doing ok. I definitely won't be harvesting any this year, but glad to hear Purple passion has a good taste. I would love to try growing them from seed someday like you. Sounds like I may need to get more planted for next year. My goal is to freeze some for over winter. Thanks again for all the tips and hope you have a great weekend!
Wow, the river is really close. I hope you don't have to install rip-rap on your side of it for flood protection. We were just saying it was a perfect time to saw those supports shorter and your Dad showed up with the saw. Those tomatoes are getting big. Now those walls are scrubbed, the plants are going to grow even faster.
So far it’s been ok. A couple years ago it flooded the pasture next to the greenhouse, but we got lucky. Still need to saw the posts in the other bay, but it will be so much easier to slide the channels around. I’m happy to see the tomatoes getting big too, but at the same time I know what’s ahead of us. Those plants get heavy, but it’s fun. -Devon
Hi Devon, I have question about irrigation time for NFT System. Did you have schedule for irrigation? for example five minutes every hour or the irrigation system work all day (no stop ) ? Thanks.
Wow that’s some big ol’ beans! What variety are those? Your seed haul looks like mine. I have lots of leftovers from last year. Keep you asparagus in an area that won’t invade your other crops , it’s quite invasive.
The beans are Fortex and they are awesome for both hydroponics and in the soil garden. Katy taught me to keep the seeds in the fridge and so far I’ve gotten 1 or 2 year old seeds to grow. Thanks for the asparagus info. Still deciding on the location, but that’s good to know 😀
Thanks, Devon, for your very informative videos. Two quick questions - What equipment do you use to video? Where do you purchase your Oasis Cubes? and what size?
Thank you so much! I have a GoPro 8 and a Movo mic from Amazon. We get the multi seed Oasis cubes and pick them up from CropKing in Lodi, Ohio so we do not have the extra shipping cost.

Hello i just watched most of your video about hydroponics.. i just want to ask a few questions about your pipes and small hose that connected to nft channels.. what size of pipe did you use and how it works..? What water pump did you guys use? 😁 Thank you 🥰🥰🥰 🥬🥬🥬
Are you able to use the wet wall for cooling at this time of year or will the incoming air just make it freeze ? Can you just bring in more outside air this time of year to cool with ?
Yep we bring in more outside air to cool for now. I wish I would have filmed it but Katy went into the control tunnel a couple times while we were cleaning to adjust the vent wall and exhaust fans because we were getting hot.
Wow, my shoulders would ache after all that scrubbing! It sure looks good! My seeds have sprouted for the NFT system. How long does it take for the roots to start showing through the bottom of the Oasis? Thanks again!
I was sore the next day, even my legs! That’s great about your seeds. I’d say in a day or two after they sprout. I was surprised on my how they just popped out all of a sudden. Can’t wait to hear how they do 🥬
Tell your mum, if she moves the stone back, and put 3 layers of cardboard over the place where they coming up, and this will stop them. Also, your greenhouses should not be getting to temps that you can't stay in, as that will put the plants into heat shock, and i notice leaves drop, which means its to hot. The way forward is really Aquaponics, 10% of water usage, and they grow 30% faster. Also you have the profit from the fish, you feed the fish, make money on the fish, and everything after that is free produce.
Hey, I've watched a few of your videos, I think they're great. I am intrigued by the NFT channels you're using from Crop King, in that they don't use net cups like I see in a lot of DIY NFT channels and other hydroponic methods. I'm looking at getting an NFT system (buy or DIY) for home growing and I notice net cups at first hold roots too high above the water so one must hand-water for a few days until the roots get down far enough, which doesn't seem appealing. Nor does the aspect of having even more things to clean. But I've not yet got any actual experience in the matter. Are there any disadvantages that you've discovered in using those no-net-pot NFT channels?
Thank you very much! We have never used net cups. Since the Oasis cube we use for seeding touch the bottom of the channels, the roots are always able to reach the nutrients. I wouldn't like to worry about hand watering either. We can just place ours into the channels and they are good to go. I don't know of any disadvantages since I don't have any net cup experience to compare to, but we have grown a wide variety of lettuces, greens, herbs and microgreens just fine. That's another thing too. With the CropKing channels, you can take off the lid and grow microgreens.
Cool, thanks. Yes I did like the removable tops, at the very least to make cleaning easier. But good point on the microgreens, I hadn't considered that.
