I did a similar thing. I took dried mud from the bottom of a dried up puddle and kept it for 6 months. I then put it in a jar of well water. About 3 weeks later I had a bunch of ostracods swimming around the jar. I didn't have a microscope at the time. I guess I'll have to repeat the test now that I have a microscope. Love seeing the stuff you do!
Nature never fails to amaze me, and your jars always add to my excitement. Life finds a way…always. No matter how many extinction events have, and will occur on this amazing planet of ours, She starts again, with rudimentary building blocks of life that will evolve into more complex life forms. I love your curiosity, and your endless interest in what happens on these tiny scales. It would be interesting to see what changes a freeze and thaw cycle would effect on one of your jars. Thank you for always feeding your curiosity, and ours, by following the principle of “instant life…just add water”. You remind me of what Leuehoke must have felt when he first saw drinking water with his primitive microscope, and saw his tiny monsters. Please never lose that part of you that wants to know, and jumps in with both feet. You remain one of my favourite channels, and wherever that mind of yours decides to go…I will gladly follow. Stay well and happy, and do keep up your seduction of the corvids along with your more usual peeks into the tiny worlds a jar can hold when you put a few random ingredients in, and add water.🖤🇨🇦
Great video!! Hope to get an update on the birds again soon, too! We're all SO delighted you've found your way back to us. Thrilled to see you active!! 🎉
Your videos are always fun to watch, thank you for the uploads :3 And I loved the funny things you did throughout the video, like eating the mic at the end, lol.
Awesome video. A longer piping tool would enable you to both keep your hand clean and have better isolation for this cool experiment. The miniature creatures on your hand can affect the ecosystem process. Why did you not seal the jars after adding water?
I'm so grateful to have had a few new episodes from you to watch this week! Thanks! The past few weeks have been rough and your videos brought a little comfort.
I have a dumb question as a noob who has recently found your channel: how much of this growth is from the old stuff in the jars versus new stuff from the lids being open? Like if you had done this with just adding water and sealing the jars, would you have had similar results? Thanks for the video and I'm looking forward to more crow content :)
This is quite the opposite of a dumb question! You're very astute to point to this unknown factor. We can't really know since it would require more jars, some of which contained only water, with and without lids. But keep up this kind of questioning! That's an essential part of science 😊
I think it's relevant to note that he usually focuses on organisms found naturally in his local eco-system, different organisms are introduced through rain water, tap water and small animals, bacteria or algae already in his direct environment. So unlike some other channels that focus on larger scale controlled exotic ecosystems he tends to focus more on biodiversity commonly found in non-exotic ecosystems with life taken from what is found directly around him. Although I understand people's interest in knowing how much in these jars is from tapwater that has been introduced I think it might not make a huge difference as he tends to use tapwater for most of his projects, on top of that I know as also a resident from the Netherlands that our water is generally quite clean and consistent, our moderate climate also affects the ability for growth of organisms to thrive, during colder months a lot of organisms die and he's even featured this on his channel by showing how open ecosystems he's had go through different phases as temperature changes and natural debris and bacteria are introduced over time. That is where his interest seems to lie and what his videos tend to be about, it's an approach from a natural ecological standpoint.
Thanks - this was so cool! And what a happiness to see you having grown into such a beautiful young man! My niece loved her presents of ecospheres - you certainly has made for a lot happy hum life times! Lots of love from Denmark ❤🤗
A tip for putting the cover glass in the water is been a paperclip to wear. It forms a 90° angle and use the smaller bent inside part to put it under the water.
As another being who is also definitely a human 👀 I love your videos dude! Although the one where you drank a jar was hard to watch. Fascinating though!
If I'm not mistaken, this smaller pot was the pot that contained the ecosphere that had 24 hours of light, right? I would like to say that I love your videos, and I even made some ecospheres because of you. Many of the animals that live in my pots today, I know because of you, thank you for making interesting content, a hug from Brazil :)
I would love to see the effects of movement on an ecosphere like a jar filled halfway and placed on a rock tumbler to see if constant motion hinders growth or if a heartier ecosystem emerges
I would love to see some statistics or visual data relating to the evaporation levels, reconstituting the jars, and the amount and types of life that grow.
Your channel inspired me to take an old whiskey bottle and put tap water and some dead plant material in it. I’ve got a lot of red silt stuff forming that I think is iron rich as I added some chicken blood at some point to see what would happen. In your experience how frequently do you get ‘spontaneous life’? Bc I haven’t seen anything but algae
I was so happy to see there were 3 new LIJ videos from the last time I checked the channel. But now I've watched them and there aren't any more I haven't seen already😔😭
5:56 possibly a rotifer? A lot of different species anchor themselves like that, Journey To The Microcosmos did a really good video on it called Flinching Saves Lives In The Microcosmos
I just absolutely adore you!!❤️ I love your videos they're so interesting & funny!! I look forward to the next one & next one & the ne...Just Don't stop, (Sry if u sang that! lol) you're really amazing @ this!!!!🤟🏼🤗😁💟🤩
I kinda want to see what would happen if you took a sample from either jar, and put it in the other jar. How the different species would interact when a little bit of chaos is thrown in.
You got me into closed ecosystems. I have one on my desk right beside me. I do have a question, the water is an insane black color. Like, no light is doing anything in there. Its so black that when shining a flashlight on the side of the jar, no light makes it to the other side. Dose anyone know why this is? I dont really mind and im going to let it play out, im just cerious what could be causeing it. Im assuming its bacteria.
I bet there’s a bunch of skin flora and bacteria floating in the air that have been introduced, since you had to stick your whole hand in to get samples. I wonder if those microbes will take hold or be eaten quickly!
this makes me think what would happen if you took off the lid and put it back on in a yearly cycle. maybe taking dirt and other material from an area that experiences dry and wet seasons every year.
With multi-focus stacks you can make (pseudo) 3D images of what's too big to be in focus. There's some free software for that. I think you can use imagej of Fiji for it
I have a quick question, how do i keep my jars healthy on really hot days? where even the inside of my house is hot. Because I know if i leave it in a dark yet cool room, the plants won’t grow, and if i put them in a room with sunlight, it’ll just cook them…so how do i get around this?
Would have been interesting to have used boiled water in one of the jars, to make sure you’re not contaminating your bacteria colonies with bacteria from your water supply.
The question I have, if sterilized tap water is not enough to revitalize these jars back to previous levels of wild life, just how much water from a natural source is?
I picture the crows and magpies watching from the balcony 👀👀👀
Tf is this human doin' ?
Always have to immediately click when one of your videos pops up on my notifications. Absolutely love it, cheers mate! 👍

oooo do a control test of only well water! happy hunting! I hope you have a good discovery!

Wonderful and interesting project. Looking forward to updates to these and all the other Ecosystems
I'm so grateful to have had a few new episodes from you to watch this week! Thanks! The past few weeks have been rough and your videos brought a little comfort.
Thankful we have this distraction for our real life troubles! Hang in there, I care & you are appreciated ❤

It is also noteworthy that tap water is not sterile. Tap water has tons of microbes in it.
He's also sticking his hand in there multiple time introducing microbes

A new video from my favorite young biologist! Keep them coming!
I really dig the sideburns. 😍
As another being who is also definitely a human 👀 I love your videos dude! Although the one where you drank a jar was hard to watch. Fascinating though!
You’re so smart, funny and good looking and the content you make is always so relaxing and peaceful. Thank you! ☺️
I think this is one of the coolest channels I have ever stumbled upon.

I appreciate you getting stinky hands for us
Interesting! Excited to see how the jars change over time
Glad to see another video from ya! Hope all is well with you!
baie goed gedaan, Hollander - Groete van ZA
Looks almost ready to drink!
12:39 we getttin' a bacteria partyy. Vodka bottle water!
Great video! Microbes are so cute. I love to watch them.
I would love to see some statistics or visual data relating to the evaporation levels, reconstituting the jars, and the amount and types of life that grow.
Gosh !! Life arising from death. Or maybe, it just wasn't dead . Another great video.
hello crow man, i have befriended my local crows after being inspired by ur video, thank u🖤
Is it just me or is this channel awesome and educational adventure lol 🤣🤣🤣
Uitstekend gebruik van de potten van Kesbeke! Ik kijk graag naar je videos, keep it coming!

Awesome! Similar to ephemeral pools!
So insanely locked in to these

mhmm. Yeah, Biofilm. That's what I call it too.
I am so happy to see "This aquarium today"
A little curious: How exactly did you unintentionally dry out the jars? 🤔
Real interesting project :)

This is so cool. I never would have thought of this idea. Remind me not to eat when watching your videos. I was...thank you for that.😂
I never was sure if you were dutch but you said it in this video i love our dutch accents 😂goeie video gast!!
literaly whole episode of spore cell stage
Great video!
I'm not sure if you do this often, but I think I enjoy more your videos when you are actually on camera, feels more relatable or something 😉
Hell naw, the other way around
No way! Diy fishkeeper shirt!

Entertaining and educational 😊
cool experiment
you should stream yourself playing spore. i feel like you would like it.
You should contact You-tubers Microcosmos. They could tell you what those microbes are.
Look forward to every video you put out.
Love from a Shark3ozero and Vaush fan!
People that are eating chips that they hate but now Love
I thought, i saw Bob but i a not sure... :D ;) ty 4 the Video!
I think the microbe that was stuck was Stentor! They are anchored in place
Nice touch with the signed @thekingofdiy t-shirt!

I like how the algae are actually green, most things that size are colourless so it stands out
That's awesome duuude
New Jar drop
Oh yeah. I'm in love 🥴
This prove that water is Life
Would you happen to have a way of viewers sharing their own ecosystems with you? I have Two myself i think are really cool. :)
Can you please tell us about tech that you use for the videos? I mean microscope, mic and camera 🙏
I can’t be the only one curious about those two black jars to the right of the specimen jars.
Seems like the biofilm isn't stinky bc it's more algae based?
12:06 RMS Slide, sunk with all hands.
12:47 SS Sampler, disappeared at sea.
Neither wreck has yet been found.

I need a crow update video 🦅

If you gonna redo this experiment can you heat up the water first before adding it

how do you know their bacteria not fungi? They could be fungal mats?
Is that a King of DIY shirt

Damn, those bacteria were having a cozy life
REHYDRATE!
The question I have, if sterilized tap water is not enough to revitalize these jars back to previous levels of wild life, just how much water from a natural source is?
Did we use sterilized water here? I thought it was just tap water.
