I am 67 years old and grew up in the woods of east-central Illinois, hunting, fishing, gathering every kind of subsistence thing the pioneers used to go after, from squirrels to sassafras roots, to spring and fall mushrooms because my grandpa and grandma were poor pioneers and they taught us. We used to seine crawdads for bait, but cook some on a camp fire. I do like my shrimp!... specially in a gumbo or jambalaya! ... but I'll take em any old way! ;) Sure looks like fun!... throwin that net. And those patties remind me of making doughball carp bait! Wish I could join ya. For those wondering, the limit is SC is still a full 48 qt cooler, just like the man said, and you can get a baiting license for $25 and run the poles just like they did. Everything shown is perfectly legal. Sounds like a good shrimpin year comin this season. Good luck!
I hope you have many more days like this....spending time with your father. I miss my father he was taken way before his time....thumbs up to both of you......!!!
It's always a blessing to see father and son doing activities together. I learned from my dad how to fish, he had a boat and we would go fishing on lake Ontario, a lot of good memories.
My dad use to do lawn maintenance for people that lived on the St. John's River. They would give him permission to shrip there docks. For nearly a month before shrimp season, once a week (when we would do maintenance on their yard) he would throw fish pellets around the docks. When the shrimp really started to run, he would mix fish meal, flour and water to make patties. We would throw them off certain dock planks marked and lighted with lanterns. We used 12' dolphin nets and cast all night. Almost every night we would catch at least 250 lbs of shrimp. The only thing I didn't like was cleaning the shrimp. I'd sit with buckets of ice water deheading, cleaning and depoooping. Eventually your hands would go numb from the ice and you didn't feel that shrip Barb stab so much. I miss those times. I wish I could do one more shrimping season with him Rip.
@david mcintire No, regulations are put into place to protect fisheries. If everyone did whatever they wanted there would be no more fish to catch. Laws are made of a reason. It's not for Money it's for preservation. The St Johns River can't be owned. You can only hold the land up to it. Not the water way. Thus fishing regulations apply to any and all fish removed from the river. My brother in law is a Volusia County game warden. 👍
