Adding the witch isn't really all that weird. Mulan was a real person, but mysticism and sorcery are prominent elements within Chinese lore. Also, the falcon that the witch turns into is the dark counterpart to the Chinese phoenix, which represents the union of yin and ying and symbolizes both male and female qualities. So the witch is like the yin to Mulan's yang.

Mulan was always my favourite disney princess movie and has a seperate part
it looks great. Most of it was shot here in New Zealand. I have a few friends who were horse-riding extras for the battle scenes

This might be a big hit. It's a well loved Disney movie with a popular Chinese actress Liu Yifei as lead. I think Disney wants to capitalize this movie in China and could pull big number there too. I look forward to watching it.
Next year is so busy. Mulan, Black Widow, Wonder Woman all dropping within 3 months. Mulan could be a good movie but I don't trust Disney at all. The Lion King was awful, Beauty and the Beast was lame and Aladdin was so so. Let's hope for the best.

"If any Disney princesses meet her in an alley it's game over" I love Fa/Hua Mulan she ranks in my top 5. However, although not technically an official Disney Princess..Kida from Atlantis is still a Princess/Queen in a Disney film and I think she could give her a good run for her money.
Disney and the director of Whale Rider are making a $300 million Wuxia film about Mulan, and I am all about it.

@@rexxbailey2764 A genre of novels, movies, etc. created in and extremely popular in China. It's basically fantasy martial arts involving heroes and villains that have otherworldly abilities. Like when the bad guys run up the wall in this Mulan trailer. Or like the fights in the trees in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Or Xena: Warrior Princess. It was heavily inspired by Wuxia with Xena being able to run through crowds on people's heads or jump and flip through the air much higher than a person should able to.

The real Mulan story doesn't have LiShang or another love story what's so ever, it's not a story about finding the one etc. Disney added it to make the cartoon more happily ever after for kids.
In China, dragon represents man and the King while phenix represents woman and the Queen.
So, the mushu is also added for the consideration of kids and I think that's why disney changed it to phenix in this real live action movie.
Well even with Li Shang, the cartoon wasnt really about finding true love like most disney princess. But even if it was, theres nothing bad about having a love interest

More people should feel like Rick when they see other groups represented. I've been on both sides of that like as a woman with Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel I felt so emotional finally getting to have that and seeing black people be so hyped for Black Panther was beautiful. Hopefully we will move forward with other forms of representation as far as gender, sexuality, race etc. I would legitimately cry seeing a lesbian lead action/superhero or Disney princess.

What you're thinking of is one of the rewritten version where the writers wants to torment Mulan as much as possible, I believe there's also one where she became a concubine.

Mulan did NOT die tragically in the end of the original tale. The original tale is a poem called ballad of Mulan, and it is clear that Mulan was rewarded for what she had done for her country and sent back to hometown with glory. Any version of the tale after this original version cannot represent the most original tale of Mulan. If you want to make a claim, try to do sufficient homework first.

This film looks like the old school chinese historical fantasy shows and films i used to grow up with in China, but just with a bigger budget and better filmmaking. I really hope this does well because Mulan is one of my favorites, and one of the few heroes who look like me and when I was a kid, I wanted to be like Mulan. And on the topic of the "not wanting any allusions to possible gay romance", I'm not even sure Disney can even use that as an excuse to be quite honest, especially since CBS has Star Trek Discovery airing officially in mainland China, and that show has an explicit out and proud gay couple who kiss on screen and has storylines focused around them, so if that could get past the levels of Chinese censorship to be allowed to be broadcast in China, then mere allusions or even an actual gay couple should not be an issue. I feel like that's just kind of like Disney making excuses now.

Actually Mulan did not become a concubine in the ancient story, the emperor just wanted to reward her with an official position in the kingdom . But she declined and went home to take care of her parents. She just want to protect her family.

I think they said that Mulan has no love interest in the new movie - so i'm guessing that's their way of avoiding the bi-curious Shang situation lol.
It's isn't cause of that. This movie is more based in the original story and myth of Mulan, to be more accurate, and in the original story, Shang didn't even exist and also, she become the general of the army :D

The original ballad of Mulan was lost over generations of time, but most of the retellings I’ve read and heard end with her committing suicide after the general she fell in love with dies in war and she returns home to find that her father died. 🤷♀️

@@OURSTUPIDREACTIONS Original Ballad of Mulan doesn't mentions concubine and suicide. Also the story took place in Northern Wei dynasty. For the concubine version which is came from Sui Tang Romance novel, and it written in Qing dynasty.
The dark suicide version of the Mulan tale came from a romance novel that was written much later. The original ballad she didn't commit suicide.
This movie is based on the original chinese legend of Hua Mulan, the animated movie was based on the original legend as well but for this one disney decided to go the original route.

Mulan is an ancient story that Chinese people grow up with.
We study "Tale of Mulan" in classes just like other Chinese ancient writings.
(We study our own ancient writings as if westerners study Shakespeare's.)
Disney's animation is only one of representations of "Tale of Mulan", so I don't think this has to be a remake of the cartoon, and it doesn't have to have "Mushu".
my fav disney movies are Mulan, Tarzan and The Atlantic. So I have a fair share of good and bad remake. This had me excited.

It's based on the Ballad of Mulan and not the Disney one. The Disney one was considered offensive towards the Chinese which this movie caters too.
Me too, I usually don't like Disney movie as they keep hard selling feminism, but for Mulan movie you don't feel it, because she is an actual person in the history, this is a good example how you show a woman/person is brave, she stand out because she want to protect her family, not because she think she is better that any man.
