After the Jakobsen/Groenewegen crash, i can't look at this crash the way i used to. This was unfortunate, but no foul play. I used to think Bauer was a reckless maniac. Now, i actually feel sorry for him, and the way he was treated because of this incident.
Im the son of steve bauer and he told me he did not mean to elbow criquielion into the bars, he also said criquielion hit his arm to bring it up and criquielion leaned into the bars. Can't get a better awnser then that.
I remember reading about this incident in Winning magazine a month after it happened, felt bad for both riders whom I idolized but Bauer was exonerated years later in a Belgian court. RIP CRIQ
Vorige week.
As Bauer approached CC and Fondriest he should have blazed past them at full speed. More than likely they would have just looked at each other to chase and meanwhile Bauer is gone. I think Bauer is underrated in cycling history, but in this case it looked like his elbow put CC in the barriers. Bauer could have had this one.
The way I see it is that Bauer didn't deliberately put Criquielion into the barriers, but he did mean to block him and to hell with the consequences - what was deliberate was the continued closing of the gap as well as the elbow after shifting gears (mid-sprint?!) after first swerving all the way over to the right, then to the left, then a sudden dart to the right again when Criq was coming through on the inside, which he had every right to - but sure, I can see how Bauer's actions were probably out of panic and desperation rather than bad intentions. Nevertheless he knew what he was doing by 'closing the door' on a faster rival having found himself in the wrong gear and with no chance of contesting the sprint. Perhaps that kind of tactic may be acceptable and laudable to the 'win at all cost' subscribers, but doesn't necessarily sit comfortably with everyone. I have no beef with Steve Bauer, but he was the one at fault. RIP CC.
Bauer moved over to box in Criquelion on the inside. This is a standard move. When done correctly the guy on the inside has to back out and come around but by then it's too late. Every sprinter knows the risk when you choose to go on the inside because you risk being boxed in, and it's also dangerous. I feel sorry for Bauer and Criquelion both. They both deserved to win, but it appeared that Criquelion would have won here. Regardless, this win certainly lauched Fondriest's career.
This is a pretty steep hill, not a flat sprint. Criquelion was in top form and would have won for sure. At 75 meters, he comes full speed to pass Bauer and you can tell Fondriest is having difficulties (the Flemish commentator saw it too and says it).
At 1:58 Criquelion had his chance to go to the outside and try to pass Bauer. He chose to go to the inside and got the door shut on him. Too bad, but if you take the inside line, you take your chances and you take responsibility for the outcome. That's a fact of life in any race. Besides, this was the flippin' World Championships. Let's get real here. Was Bauer supposed to be courteous or competitive?
Bauer got disqualified so it would seem he did cross the line. It was a pretty shit bit of riding, i'm glad it's been uploaded. Bauer doesn't have the build of a cyclist, there is something dodgy about him. He was built like an NFL player.
Bauer first went left (outside) then veered back to the right (inside). He was unpredictable. When Criquelion comes full speed to pass him, there is still two meters between Bauer and the side of the road. There was plenty of space but Bauer could not hold his line.
This is the way I see it: Bauer did not (and never would have tried to) deliberately take Criq' out. When Bauer sat down to shift gears he lost momentum so as Criq' gained on him and tried to pass (on the dangerous side near the barricades which was reckless to begin with), Criq' actually rides up and into Bauer's elbow, which knocked Bauer's arm forward (making it look at first glance like an 'elbow flick') but in fact, the truth is Criq' caused himself to crash by running into Bauer!!
you can see Bauer reached down to shift at the very last second when Criquelion was coming around and he moved over. He also stuck out his elbow to make it more difficult for Criquelion to pass him. There was no maliciousness here, just standard race tactics. Criquelion should have gone on the outside where there was no risk. Fondriest interestingly never sat done during the whole last km, as if he was getting ready to pounce anyway, so who knows maybe Fondriest would have won anyway.
Have a look at Bauers sprinting style, he had a natural tick/twitch of always sticking his right elbow out when he was going all out, whether anyone was there or not. Btw if Claud had of saved his protesting he'd have bagged a silver as a consolation at least.
RIP the Great Claude Criquelion,... you deserved that gold...

Awesome magazine back in the day!

Came here after watching Dylan Groenewegen at the 2020 Tour of Poland. Some things never change!

court trials and lawyers are one matter, sports truth is another one. Bauer was guilty 100% .
RIP Claude

RIP . You were the best in the final 1988

I have to admit it looks indeed like Bauer was strong enough to win this race but he himself was surprised by what he had done.
My dad knows him :) Bauer was a good hockey player too. His hockey mentality kicked in haha.
I was 14 years old
No you are wrong, Steve Bauer was disqualified. Fondriest became World Champion, 2nd was Gayant, 3rd was Fernandez

look's to me that he leaned into the barrier
Steve Bauer had a lot of advantage from the motorcycles, big failure there.
Tenía 14 años
Bauer should'nt have come back, but he smacked Criquilion into the ballustrades
Groenewegen 2

Can somebody give me a sprint where Fondriest lost to Criquelion?? Still can't see why or how Criq should/could have won this one..

Steve Bauer was cleared of wrong doing in this incedent.criqueloin was just in the wrong place.
