One thing that always gets overlooked when people say someones tone has changed is the recording process. The mics, mic placement, the console, tape or digital, eq after tracking all of these things play a major part in someones sound
Re DiMarzio's, he did have the DiMarzio YJM, now known as the HS-4, before the Seymour Duncan YJM. Not sure what positions but old fender catalogs probably hold the answer there. Thinking the difference isn't huge to most of us.
I did not hear any mention of the guitar strings, Yngwie uses Fender gauges .08/.11/.14/.22/.32/.46. This is like an set of 8's with the top two heavier bass strings. Quite a big part of his tone, IMHO. Thanks Elmo, enjoying this series!
yngwie's sound actually went through alot of changes over the years, just because of the different mixing/production techniques. odyssey was my favourite, it sounded nice and sharp like yours, but they used some stereo tricks to make one guitar sound really wide. fire and ice had a nice warm thick eq to it(but i wish it had more stereo width). i think releasing the animal is the closest to sounding like a modern professional sound
Odyssey’s guitar sounds great with the mix but it’s so thin i doubt it’d be a tone someone wants in the bedroom. My favorite tones eclipse especially the in the title track
Besides the arpeggios at light speed Strat/Marshall parts of Yngwie's sound and playing, I really think the things that make Yngwie sound uniquely like himself, are his vibrato and personal idea of intonation. Elmo, you rule at explaining and nailing Yngwie's sound and style while being a stellar player who sounds like Elmo, not to be confused with Yngwie who while similar, is different altogether. Whew. Great show man , I am so glad I found your show, you are a true talent.
You always hear that high gain yet articulate tone from the amp and overdrive pedal sounding like it`s more gain than it really is along with the dohk dohk dohk delay in Malmsteen`s tone. That`s the base line. I can take a early Zepplin tone on my Boss Katana and add delay and a smidge of reverb and be in the ball park.
Ive been using a Friedman Dirty Shirley Mini head through my Marshall 1960 lead Cab. And a Maxon Apex 808 with my Ibanez Jem and I've been getting close as well. But this sounded great! Awesome video and playing! I learned a lot about Yngwie's gear! My next piece of gear shall be 1987x plexi head and possibly some YJM fury's for the strat!
If you want his vintage sound a bit easier..he exclusively bought any Fender LEAD II series guitar and took the alnico X-1pickups out of it..they were exclusive to the Lead II. Wound tighter.. 9600 ohm vs what was in the Stratocaster from 79-82.
Love your videos Elmo. I have the Fender Yngwie pedal and a Fender GDec. Primarily play my PRS or Schecter but will be getting a strat this year soon I hope lol. After many years still far from you and Yngwie lol. Thanks for the videos!!!
My 1987x reissue is a 2018 model made to my order. I think they installed a bright cap. When using the Fender YJM overdrive, it's too saturated and buzzy. I had to use the lower output channel 2 inputs for a more pure tone.
I aspire to have a tone somewhere between Malmsteen (Unleash the fury) and early 90's thrash-metal. I am a rhythm player and I enjoy getting a real nasty riff going. However, leads are leads and Yngwie's suits me on so many levels. So to accomplish my desired tone: fender malmsteen signature strat (2016, so SD yjm's), Ibanez 4x12 cab, Laney Ironheart tubeamp 60w. Now, the Ironheart has 3 channels: clean, less clean, lead. I set it at the less clean and power things up with a fender Malmsteen od. To keep things under control I have a Boss cs3 in the beginning and a Boss noise-suppressor at the end of the chain. The Ironheart has quite a tasteful reverb but I do supplement my tone with a Bi-yang delay-pedal. Dunlop cry baby - wah. I do dial in a more Malmsteen-like tone from time to time. But I prefer a slightly more gritty one. One reason being that if it's to clean I will hear the mistakes even more often 😁. One thing with single coils is that they are quite unforgiving, they won't let you get away with f*cking up. This is what Iike about them, besides the tone. But I don't want to hear every bit of sloppy playing. And. I know my tonal roots and I was a big big fan of Dave Mustaine (rhythms, not his leads) for many years so I try to balance these two tones, which are more or less opposities of each other. And I'll add, for anyone looking for that Marshall-sound but might lack the money. Go Laney--they are more or less a poor man's Marshall. Just a tip 👍
@@MrPolevaulter Sure is. Those Caparisons have their own tones, especially his current 8-string (Applehorn, was it?). I once dialed in his settings on my, still didn't get close. Another great video! IMHO Yngwie tries too hard these days - it's like he's competing with himself. Unfortunately it makes it easy for people to bash him. But you can never take away the pure talent that he had as an 18-ish year old playing for Alcatrazz - he'd achieved more by the age of 20 than most other guitarists including inventing a new genre of music. I doubt it will. Maybe get an Yngwie type overdrive pedal first. That will get you closer, and it's fairly cheap.
Elmo Karjalainen Yes Ok Thank You ... I sound like old style Robin Trower
Awesome video! My "Yngwie Sound" is a Fender Malmsteen Signature with SD fury's and the Marshall YJM100. I would like to buy an older plexi to use with the DOD's.. Cheers from Brazil!!
Thanks :)
Awesome video. Too bad I cant play like yngwie lol
Haha :D No one can :D Cheers!
What are his amp settings and pedal settings
Pedal on full. Not sure about the amp, except that the volume is on full.
I have found that when I try to use Reverb with my Yngwie sound it is just overkill, even though I know he uses reverb live. What do you think about Reverb for YJM tones?
I'd say delay is better. It doesn't mess up the sound as much.
Use overdrive through reverb, not vice versa
Kristen Wildrick correct. Reverb post drive
amp and pedal settings?
Pedal maxed out. Amp, volume on full, treble 6, mid 8, bass 8, presence 4-6.
amp settings?
Probably the same as always on my Plexi. From bass to presence: 7-8, 8, 6, 4. Volume on full.
Delay?
TC Electronic Flashback mini
Another 1000 lbs of gain n ud be @ right, listen to alcatraz, insane amounts...try moving the OT/CT to screens.. :)
Im using a yjm 308 dod..but man, no led kills me live.
Just leave it on :D
@@MrPolevaulter lol i do , but i dont have a gate , so it gets a lil annoying..mostly to my drummer , but im really ok with that .
@@michaelmarquis1824 :D
why dont you show to us the set up with not a yjm guitar sir...try cheap guitar with a cheap pedal....
Been thinking of that, and will probably do that one day.
@@MrPolevaulter tq so much...for your attention.....not everyone can afford to buy his guitar...in my country the cost to buy his guitar is about 7 thousand plus sir...
Dude, did you really just say yngwie malmsteen really isn’t that great these days ???? 11:53
Come on mannnnnnnn
His playing is, but his music, singing, production and the whole package isn't all that great.
@@MrPolevaulter his playing too has unfortunately deteriorated too. Only age can't be blamed because for example John Petrucci in some ways plays better now than in his 20s, 30s.
I want to play like you...
Killer
Cheers :)
Can I use a split humbucker
You won't get the same result.
Practice 16 hrs a day for 10 yrs? Eddie, Jake and Randy had much better riffs.

i like the warm sweet tone of rosewood
character of tone is similar , but sound too boxy and thin comparing to Yngwie sound
A little litttttle too compressed.. Almost there I say, congratulations!!!!
Thank you!
Hey what’s up! Question..
You said that I can use any tube (valve) amp. Well, I have an EVH 5150iii EL34 50watt. Also just ordered the DOD 250 preamp reissued and I’m playing through my fender Strat with
DiMarzio HS-3 at the bridge and HS-4s in the middle & neck. What channel do you think would work best for me ? Or do You think I’ll be good or should I opt for getting a Marshall?
Love your videos Man! Keep it going!!! 💪🏽🤘🏽
Thanks for the question. I haven't tried the amp, but I have tried a lunchbox version of it, and the 6505 Mini. Based on those I'd say use the clean channel, and crank it so you get power amp breakup, and then use the DOD. Not sure if it will be exactly what you're after, but it should sound great. Also it will be loud :D
@@MrPolevaulter thank you buddy!! Also, now I have a jvm210h 100w
Any suggestions now?
@@momo89609 Play loud and remember, more is more 😀
