Happy New Year y'all!!! 🥳🎉 What videos do you want to see from me in 2023? Comment below!👇 Also, check out my VLOG CHANNEL here: www.youtube.com/@moremeimei
I love how descriptive you are on your food tours. The breakdown really helps. Your videos are what has encouraged me to expand what I call my elementary kid palette lol. I LOVE Japanese bbq over KBBQ, especially out in Seattle but now I have to go out to the OC and try it! The crispy rice and skirt steak with the sauce looked so yummy!
The leaf in the pho is called perilla leaf. Sometimes you'll see them translated as sesame leaves, but they don't grow on the same plant as sesame seeds. Very popular in east Asian cuisine. Often included in Korean bbq. The red variety is also what makes Japanese pickled plums(umeboshi) red.
I'm Vietnamese. I started cooking when I was 7 because I love cooking and exploring ingredients. Pho never has perilla leaf in it, it would change entirely aroma of the dish. Only Thai basil, culantro and beansprouts as the side veggies (mostly use in the south Vietnam, northern pho doesn't have these side veggies). Green onions, cilantro, sliced white onions as toppings. I'd even say that Vietnamese cuisine just doesn't use perilla leaf. I got to know it from Korean BBQ. We have leaves with similar shape to perilla though, such as rau tía tô.
@@itsnotif.itswhen it was my understanding that rau tia to is a Vietnamese variety of perilla. It's good to be more specific though since there is a lot of variety in the flavors and appearance.
The owners of Trieu Chau are ethnic Chinese from Cambodia and speak Chiu Chow 潮州 dialect. It’s Chiu Chow style food catered to a Cambodian/Vietnamese palate. Glad you got to try it. It’s so good and the owners are very nice people. 😀👍🏽
I think the son is running it now? The husband passed away a couple years ago and the wife was running it for awhile and she finally retired from the business. My family used to live across from them. They've lived in the same neighborhood for decades. The wife is a really nice person, she used to give my mom fruits from her backyard all the time.
@@WingChunBoyz yea,it's so unfortunate:( They were really nice humble people. If i remember correctly he had a heart attack. My parents were talking about when he did pass. A great guy went in a horrible way. They still kept the restaurant in the family though.
I live in OC. The variety of cuisine here is so amazing I feel as though I could eat at a great local restaurant every day of the year, and never eat at the same place twice. But I'm pretty shy, so if it wasn't for this kind of food tours, I wouldn't know what to order!
This came out so great! It was awesome hanging out again with yall and it really inspired me to shoot a TON of foodie style restaurant content here in Hawai‘i in 2023!
That pho omg. Always happy to see a new video notification! I’ve been going through quite a lot lately but when I watch your videos it helps me escape to feel better and reconnect with my love for food. Thank you MeiMei and your videos for helping me, never stop. :) Was just in LA/OC and enjoyed tons of yummy food, coffee and boba! I hope you had great holidays and always look forward for the next video. 🤍
The purple leafy mint eaten with Banh Xeo is called purple Perilla Leaf. They also have green Perilla as well. A lot of people mistake it with Japanese Shiso leaf but they could be more different in flavors. The Perilla leaf is much more herby.
I’m super excited when you post LA/OC food tours cause I’m from So Cal so it’s close enough for me to check it out so thanks so much! 🤗 I’d like to try the Phoholic and the thai pizza place is intriguing!!
The #19 you ordered is called Phnom Penh noodles at other Cambodian restaurants. Definitely did it right with the soup on the side and dry noodles. Looks legit
This video is so helpful to find new food spots! I just moved to So Cal a few year ago and I’ve been going to the same restaurants for a while now. Thank you!!! 🤍
Girl I love your videos, really helping me out as a chronically tired university student😊 I’m from Norway so we don’t have as much cool places from different cultures, so seeing you eat all that food makes me so jealous yet happy that you can live of off your passion🎉 I’ve been a subscriber since 2019 and you’re a gem. PS can you tell me where Bird got that grey crossbody bag he usually uses in videos, it’s so cute!
My favorite food from the video was the banh xeo!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT, it's probably my favorite Viet dish. i haven't been to the oc in a while, so i def gotta check out some of these places whenever i go!
the rising phoenix from orobae is worth waiting in line for ! i'm usually not a big fan of tea , but the way they've roasted it for that drink is amazing ! it's sooo good !!!
I actually tried to apply to work at rodeo 39. Before they opened up they had a big job fair; the owner of the building was there and I had the honour of picking up a conversation with him. He told me the people who own banh xeo boys are actually 2 dentists; banh xeo is their passion. Their original location is in downtown Santa Ana. Also, if you're ever back in the OC you should defs try shootz. It's fusion Hawaiian, their kimchi fried chicken tonkatsu is really good! And the musubi too. Anyways, glad you enjoyed your foodventure in the OC! ^°^
OC/LBC has so many good restaurants and dessert options. Quan Mii (banh xeo), Phnom Penh Noodle Shack, Nomad , Yummy Banh Bao, Oc & Lau, Nep Cafe, Da Vien coffee, Phin Smith, SweetHoney, Pasta e Pasta, Hiro Nori Ramen, Don Churros, Porto's Bakery
Happy 2023! Everything looked amazing! But top 3 things I want to try are the banh cunh (never seen it made with egg before either!), Banh xeo & the taco place! 🤤
Hi, Meimei! Wow! I live in Orange County and I’m glad to see you have a video of great spots. I’ve actually never heard of most of these! My favorite boba places that are close to me are Ding Tea in Rancho Santa Margarita (I go there a lot) and The Alley at the Irvine Spectrum. I hope you try The Alley at some point next time you visit. I’ve tried a few other boba places and didn’t like them as much. Please come back soon! This makes me so happy! 🥰
That leaf is called tia to in Vietnamese. It's a bit similar to shiso as others have noted but I wouldn't say its the same. For Japanese and Korean cultivars they come in either red or green and have a differing flavor between the two colors. In Vietnam I feel like I exclusively seem them bi-color (green on one side and red on the other). I find the flavor of Vietnamese tia to different as well, not as "herby" or "medicinal compared to Korean/JP shiso. In English it's called beefsteak plant.
I’m in Orange County and you introduced places and culinary delights that are a must try ! Next time your visit SoCal you must check out all the Asian must try’s in Hacienda Heights and City of Industry . The largest Buddhist temple is in Hacienda Heights and their veggie lunch is amazing ! Just over the hill on Colima you will find places that will keep you exploring for days ...
-Love Orobae!! The Rising Phoenix is my fave, and for coffees, the Formosan latte (Guji Haro) is the BEST. -Tacos Los Cholos is by far my favorite taco spot!! Rib Eye tacos ALL DAY. -And Paderia!! Best cookies! Please also try LAGU Cafe near there.. Strawberry Sakura latte, Melon latte, and Sea Salt Matcha!
I would recommend going back to square where you went to paderia and try out Cluck Kitchen I think it will be the best Nashville hot Chicken you will have in Orange county area
Omg I used to live right by that curry Thai pizza place in Long Beach when I was in graduate school. I love Long Beach. But if I were to say which meal looked best I’d have to say the tacos all the way. They made me want to go get them and it’s like 11 pm almost lol. Good video
Thanks for sharing Mei Mei! My husband has a severe nut allergy but he loves pho so it's been tricky finding a pho spot in LA area that he feels comfortable going to. Phoholic looks very promising since their menu looks like it's ONLY pho and nothing else. Thank you for the recos!
happy new year. love your food review tour . if you are in oc. might want to try 405 Noodle-pot in westminster, ca. or 98 shabu grill buffet . capital seafood restaurant
Anjin has been one of my favorites in OC, probably before you were born. I like the premium Beef tongue at Manpuku better though but they always sell out early.
If you need another suggestion. At Rodeo39 you passed by a bakery called sweet G's and they sell ube cookies with white chocolate 🍪!! It's always my go to and it's unique!
Costco has new moon cakes I'd love if you tried them! They're called Isabelle year of the rabbit cakes the flavors are lychee rabbit cakes, ice Q cakes and taro cakes!
I still haven't found any place in the OC that comes close to Chez Panisse, one of my all time world class restaurants. Do you know any in the OC similar? Orange County is the soul place for best Asian food, beside Los Angeles Asian town.

Born and raised in OC and haven’t been to a lot of these places. I recommend Tuttu Fresco for Italian
Just moved away from OC after 10+ years there, and as someone with an addiction to boba, I had so many more places I wished you’d gone to!
hi meimei!! I just finished gymnastics and got my full turn back on beam!! And now i'm watching my favorite video and eating homemade karaage!!
I’m from OC and I loooove these videos! I live in Korea and am moving home soon and want to try all these out

I agree about Anjin, it’s a must for great quality beef in OC. Went years ago and still remember it
For Orobae, the fruit smoothies are criminally underrated. Especially on a hot day, those drinks are perfect!
