You're right on the button with 10 out of 10 for detail and value, it's is not my favourite aircraft but I am warming to it l wonder if the guys at Tamiya would do a B17 with the same detail in 1/72 👍
I think the ram tapes are not so pronounced now, I may be wrong, its hard to tell from images as the angle of view plays a part. Tamiya have knocked it out the park again. I am waiting for their F-35C 1/48 even if I never build it, it's just a scale model engineering miracle!
I have both A and B versions and C on order. Fortunately I live in Japan so availability is good and prices reasonable. Except for that damn 1/32 Tamiya Mosquito! If I ever get one I'm going to place it in a special lock glass case, unbuilt in its box, and stare at it in awe everyday. 😍
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab That's it, rub it in. 'I don't want to talk to you anymore, you empty headed animal food trough water. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of Elderberries.' But seriously 🙂👍
Tell you what Peter, between £31.99 - £34.99, what a bargain for such a superb kit! I have the Hasegawa version (NO wepon bay, naughty) and the very nice Italeri version (with weapon bay - hurray!). Both kits of a high standard but it looks like the Tamiya kit has trumped them - except for not cutting the canopy mask for the modeller, strange oversight. Balanced by the inclusion of the stand/extended gear option. Thanks for the deep review, going on my wish list.
You should do a review of the 1/48 Jaguar GR1 GR3 by Heller you could title it from the sublime to the ridiculous! It’s the other end of the quality spectrum.
I just built the 1/48 Tamiya Spitfire Vb. The decals were generally atrocious, particularly roundels, which have two parts - the white backing, and then the blue/yellow/red part. Although the rear fuselage band and yellow wing leading edges were fine.
Sounds like Honda should be building cars to Tamiya's standards, great review Peter. Kit of the year maybe? Especially when you consider the price you paid.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab 617 is a bomber squadron and really the F-35 should be designated as F/A-35 (joint strike fighter project after all). In that respect it's a direct follow up to the Tornado. The stupidity is that it's a Marines variant rather than the A model, which the RAF ought to buy (if we weren't saving pennies for Tempest).
Peter, there is a comment on the side of the box by the Italian version that says "This model can not be assembled with doors closed". Does this mean undercarriage down and lift fan door open is the only option? If so, definitely not a 10.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab Looks like a fabulous kit but I'd pay another fiver to have the option of having it with the fan door closed and nozzle horizontal

The F-35 is going to be the main global aircraft system over the next 20 years across multiple nationalities. Whilst they all have boring stealth paint schemes, if youre Airfix, Revell, Tamiya, Meng etc etc, not having an F-35 in 1/72 and 1/48 is a large gap in your product range (airfix for example could/should do UK specific weapons such as Spear 3, Meteor Paveway IV etc because no one else will). It may not make any sense to the modeller, but if you dont have it in your standard range, its lots of lost sales and opportunity. It's lunacy that Airfix hasn't produce a EF Typhoon. My cash has gone straight to Revell.
10 out of 10? More than £30 for us plebs. Staples, masks not cut, canopy not tinted, wheels not weighted, instructions not in colour. 9.75 surely? Please send to me immediately 😂
I built the Italeri B reboxed by Tamiya. Not a bad kit but it was so boring. Properly drained my enthusiasm. Meh subject. Modern jets are bland, beige and vanilla.
This is top quality Tamiya, at there absolute best. Will be adding this to my Christmas list..
The stand is also an excellent addition 👍
I wish Tamiya would produce their early p-38 in 1/72 scale. That scale needs a good kit of the Lightning.

I think the main difference is that the "tape" is now pretty much the same colour as the majority of fuselage, which makes it stand out less.
