"Slap some bacon on a biscuit and let's go! We're burnin' daylight!" Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Robert Carradine. Junior Rodeo Fact: About half the boys had experience on the junior rodeo circuit and the rest were taught what they had to know during production. Real Cowboy Fact: Clay O'Brien, now Clay O'Brien Cooper, went on to become an eight-time world champion team roper competing in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He is still among the all-time top money winners in the PRCA. It's Just A Movie Fact: When John Wayne informed Bruce Dern that Dern's character would shoot Wayne's, he told Dern that audiences would hate him for it. This proved prophetic, because after the film's release, Bruce Dern received death threats for his character killing John Wayne by shooting him in the back. The Duke Fact: Roscoe Lee Browne was urged by his friends not to work with the right-wing John Wayne. He ignored them and the two actors refrained from discussing politics during filming. However despite their political and social opinion differences, John Wayne and Roscoe Lee Browne shared a love of poetry. They sometimes quoted their favorite verses between takes.
Have you ever checked out 'Word On Westerns?' Rob Word has some great interviews with western actors and crew. Including several of the cast from The Cowboys. From all accounts, it seems the kids had an awesome time filming it. And Bruce Dern really terrified the kids.
I think this is best of Wayne's late films. He played a much more relatable character as working small rancher, husband and father, instead of the western legend he mostly played in the later films.
I was really impressed by this one. Liberty Valance, Fort Apache and Red River are his elite Westerns, but this would be near the top of his second tier of great Westerns. Great performance from The Duke
Hey Irish Guy, so glad you watched this. At 5:30 I believe he's letting the horses go because he has no crew anymore to herd them, and/or can't afford to feed them. Expenses; at least that's what my Dad told me.
Thanks, Liam! 🤠 Mark Rydell directed. 🔸 This was one of my late brother's favorites as a kid. I finally saw it in my adulthood, loved it. 🔸 The actor who played 'Kate' is Colleen Dewhurst. She also played a skating coach in ICE CASTLES (1978) which was wildly popular with girls around my age (I was 10 then; my cousin Candy was 11, she loved it even more than I did). The song from it became a hit, as well. If you're ever in the mood for a cheese-flavored sport drama with romance, check it out.
Half of the boys in the movie were actors and the other half were cowboys who competed on the junior rodeo circuit. The actors were given riding and roping training and the cowboys were given acting lessons
This is one of my favorite Wayne movies next to The Shootist and The Searchers. This was also one of if not the first movie where John Wayne did not have the usual Wayne Stock of familiar actors to work with. Director Mark Rydell, Roscoe Lee Browne (Nightlinger), Bruce Dern and Colleen Dewhurst (head of the ladies) were all pretty much leftists as opposed to Wayne's conservative side. But they all worked together to make an excellent film. In fact, Colleen Dewhurst worked with John Wayne again in the 1974 cop film McQ which is worth a reaction. Some people like it, some don't but that's alright. Thanks for a nice reaction.
Probably in my top 5 of Wayne's Westerns Liberty Valance Fort Apache Red River The Cowboys The Shootist Honourable mentions -She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, Chisum, The Searchers (I've re-evaluated my view of The Searchers - initially didn't think it was great)
One of the Duke's best performances. Some people forget he wasn't really a cowboy. He was raised in suburban Los Angeles, studied law, was well read, preferred wearing suits, and didn't even particularly like horses. Others judge him on his political views
This is one of my favorite John Wayne westerns! And Bruce Dern knocks it out of the park as the villain. You know usually in a movie with kids as the main characters, any kind of villain is turned silly or dopey in some way. Not Bruce Dern!! 😂 You could pluck his character out this movie and drop him in a Segio Leone or Sam Peckinpah film!
Oh wow, cant believe ive not seen this one before and i do love wayne movies, he was just cut from a different cloth😊. This channel has inspired me to dog in the five and seven dollar cd bins at the big box store, thank you😊, next up for me killer clowns from outter space, yay. Appreciate the work you put into the video and commentary as always, sadly, alot of RUclipsrs are leaving for a variety of reasons lately, thanks for the work it takes to create content
On the DVD, there is an anniversary documentary. The director Mark Rydell talks about not wanting Wayne for the part, since he knew that they were vastly different politically. The people financing the film insisted on him. At that time in the 70's, only Wayne Westerns were assured to make money. Rydell relented, and was quite pleased on their relationship.
Hey, thanks for reacting to my favorite John Wayne movie! I loved watching your facial expressions throughout the film. Please move on to my #2 & #3 Wayne movies, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and True Grit. I'll be watching!
I was around the same age as the Cowboys were in the film at the time. Bruce Durn was the first man that I truly hated! For the way he killed the DUKE. As I grew older I finally realized that was probably the best compliment you could give a actor. As always GOD BLESS ALL HERE!!!!!!!
I was about the same age as the kids, too. So I really related. As for Bruce Dern, I watched Silent Running within months of watching The Cowboys. To the very end of the film, I kept waiting for him to do something evil. But he didn't. Taught me about typecasting and its effects lol.
As someone who has often played villainous roles in stage plays I bet Bruce Dern had a great time playing that character. There is a freedom about playing the bad guy. The Duke too puts in a great performance
Definitely in my top 10 John Wayne films. So glad they made the boys very realistic and not use them in cute manner like a lot of films do particularly in this period of American filmmaking. And Wayne gives a stellar performance with such a natural delivery of his lines.
I always loved this film, since I saw it as a kid. Wayne chewing out the stuttering boy was a shocker; My Mom thought it was awful.... Bruce Dern made a terrific villain. Gorgeous score... The theme is growing up, life and death....Relatable to everyone. Rydell the Director also made "On Golden Pond" w/Henry Fonda, Kate Hepburn
Love, Love the Cowboys!!! So glad you are reviewing it. Big Jake is good. Really like the Horse Soldiers too! Good luck with the new job! Don’t make yourself crazy, just make a list and do one at a time at first. Maybe once you get used to your new schedule you can add more. Thanks for reviewing this gem🙂

INSANE how some people treat movie characters as real people. I love film but it's a form of entertainment at the end of the day

When I went back to edit I figured that was the reasoning. Thanks all the same

Just read up on the premise. Wouldn't be a bad one to watch with the Olympics currently taking place
@@IrishGuyReacts I think so. 🤓

The boys were better than I anticipated and didn't bring down the quality of the film.

Agreed! Both Dern and The Duke were great in this. Definitely one of Wayne's strongest Westerns

Highly recommend watching it. Great Western from The Duke

Rydell said he loved Wayne. He said Wayne taught him to never prejudge anybody.
Wow! So glad Wayne got the part. He was excellent in it

Glad you enjoyed it. I have already reacted to those two. You can find a John Wayne playlist on the channel.
😅ulm
This is a hateful film - I actively detest it.
Fair enough

Great performance from Wayne. Definitely a top 10.
I was waiting for you to hit this one...
It wa shown to American boys of a certain age, as an example of life.
It was worth the wait. Excellent Western
"I have the inclination, but not the time"😅
Have you seen Jeremiah Johnson? It's fantastic! ☮️
I have not seen it yet but it is on my list.

@@barryscott8041 The scene where he blasts the kid with the stutter was one of the best moments in the film. Very clever the way it plays out

Glad you enjoyed it. And I will definitely return to Big Jake and Horse Soldiers at a later date.
This is one of my favorite John Wayne movies. So great!
Now one of mine too
