This is so mind blowing to me, that's my late Uncle, Bill Elton on trombone on the left of the trio of trombone players at 7:44. I was 2 years old at the time. So proud!
It is nice to see a band where everyone plays really really well and together from start to finish. Quite a rare thing. Especially when you have Coltrane playing on top of that.
Yes Indeed, that is my humble take on this "So What" take. although with Cannonball on the record release, he does a predictable masterful playing that Miles, as we know, hand picked his players most carefully.
Simply one of the coolest things ever recorded. Love that 1950s early B&W TV stripped down look of this. And that awesome moving camera. And Coltrane! Coltrane....
This was when the innocence of life and feelings weren't diluted and blurred by electronics, People were in touch with their feelings and creativity. The world has time for genius and innovation. No more!!
+Mary Kate Daniiher Mary I think creative music will always survive...times and music always change...electronic instruments are misused and also used with great beauty depending on who's playing them. I personally think times are better now in some ways (medical advances) and I know many improvisors who are in touch with their creativity...it just appears in different forms as it should. If it stayed the same I think that it would become quite boring. It's harder now for the creative musicians to be heard but they are there!
This was when the world and the brilliance of artists wasn't diluted, warped and blurred by electronics. Musicians were freely in touch with their genius and innovation. Gone forever, now!! We will never see their kind again.
+Mary Kate Daniiher - Honey, don't worry. Tune into towns like Nevada City, CA (KVMR) where they still have concerts with Maria Muldare etc and have many honest and creative musicians keepin' the brilliance goin' on.
+Michele Njoes So musicians who play electronic instruments aren't honest? It all depends on the musicians playing the instruments. The world is always in flux and if someone doesn't like the way things are going then learn an acoustic instrument and learn how to play it yourself. Then find someone to play with. Or go to a bluegrass festival and check out Del McCoury or David Grisman or Bela Fleck or The Punch Brothers, etc. Acoustic music is doing just fine these days...and changing with the times as any living art form must do.
If one truly has heaven in view ... and focus on being a child of the King, Jesus, Mount Zion will be the place to be for a heavenly reunion and musical revelations ... with unlimited love at the core. I will be there my brothers. Yo are invited too!

this will be back when the world let the truth ring free. and the cos'metics of the universe , not the cos'metics of man is desired. peace and god bless..
And Frank Rehak, section trombone in Gil's band, smokin' whenever he's not playing those cool little riffs behind the soloists. Just standing there, basking in Miles' reflected brilliance through the swirl of smoke!
Mr. P.C. and his Maiden's Head bass are an incredible duo nonpareil. The only thing missing here is Bill's haunting modal chords. Oh yeah, and of course...The Cannonball!
@@brucescott4261 What part of they are missed because of the great music they made together, don't you understand? It's only nonsense to someone who has no sense of meaning.
Coltrane's incredible work ethic and single-minded pursuit of finding a higher truth through music is what made Trane Trane. Miles may have accelerated Trane's publicity, but there would always have been a Trane. Too many people confuse talent with hard work. There has been no musician that practiced 16 hours a day for years like a religion, that did not become famous
Dean Martin unfortunately the last part of your statement isn’t true, though I wish it were. These days especially you could practice every second of every day and still not get as famous as someone who doesn’t know shit about music and just knows the right people who’ll get them publicity.
JazzLeaf nah, it's well known that Miles didn't like Coltrane, he was jealous of him, even long after he kicked Trane out of the band, he would always sneak diss Trane, Dolphy, Ornette, etc and anyone who was avant- garde.
Josh Kimbrough PLEASE!!! Miles Davis made Coltrane!!! He booted Trane out of his band because of drug use and lack of gumption when playing. It wasn't until after this happened that Trane got his shit together and took his musical career seriously. Miles's point was he (Trane) wasted many precious years...

Wow! So cool.
Yes, cool. Who is the one on the right?
@@markalbert9390 I have no idea.
Everybody's reaction to Coltrane's solo in that room is priceless!
Sagan could've put this jam on the Golden Record traveling in space...🌌
This is classic.🙌🏾
RIP Jimmy Cobb
Art Taylor?
No!!!

Quite a rare thing. Especially when you have Coltrane playing on top of that.
Nice to hear that tune with a full orchestra arranged by Gil Evans
transcendent music from the jazz masterpiece "kind of blue"
I like Miles's and Trane's solos better here than on the record. I won't call it genius, as the word is inadequate.
Yes Indeed, that is my humble take on this "So What" take. although with Cannonball on the record release, he does a predictable masterful playing that Miles, as we know, hand picked his players most carefully.
What a joyous piece of musicphotography! Was looking for something with Jimmy Cobb in it. Truely wonderful!!
History of music.

eletronic is good for listening in a party, but listen eletronic music in your house is mental illness

Indeed my dear brother.
miles in the middle of drug abuse problems in this period..quite sad
Nice Clip!
Gil is spelled Gil.
Still hard to believe that was live TV!
Wynton was a very important component in this sophisticated concept .
It is a filthy dangerous habit. But smoking definitely made these infinitely cool guys look even cooler.
And Frank Rehak, section trombone in Gil's band, smokin' whenever he's not playing those cool little riffs behind the soloists. Just standing there, basking in Miles' reflected brilliance through the swirl of smoke!
If smoking were good for us then there would be some mighty healthy people in that studio
Has anyone noticed that this version is in Eb Minor ;-)
Must be a tape speed thing. Miles is fingering the normal key (e for trumpet).
Mr. P.C. and his Maiden's Head bass are an incredible duo nonpareil. The only thing missing here is Bill's haunting modal chords. Oh yeah, and of course...The Cannonball!
@bustabass9025 ...Julian Adderley left Miles Davis to reform his own group in 1959. John Coltrane also left in 1960. Bill Evans was gone as well.

No Bill Evans either. Though Wynton just fine.

Poor Wynton Kelly can't hang with Miles and Trane...
@danielharlow6083 ...Wynton Kelly was around before Trane. You weren't around, either!
Miles was a great musician, but you can see the jealousy he had towards Coltrane, and how he was surpassing him in skill and overall uniqueness
good joke but no that's his style
trane never came to the same level as miles, duke, monk although i like early trane i kinda hate the meditations stuff
