The Mammon Machine's power is unleashed, awakening the mighty Lavos. While Zeal rejoices at the chance to join his power, Crono and his party stand in fear, finding their power not nearly enough to take on the titanic creature. Desperate measures are needed to save the day.

That final reprise of the main theme brings to mind that one Captain America speech about how as long as one man stands against evil, good will prevail. Except this one doesn't turn out as well, for the future refuses to change.
Also want to give some props to Steven Kelly for the line delivery as Magus because wow.
All it takes is a witness. And a word. Lightning can spark in anyone's veins.
Little does Lavos know of the trickery that just happened.
That’s something I never thought about. He never consumed Crono. Only the doppelgänger.
That art combined with the beautiful singing of Shala directly transitioning to Lavos destroying the party hit different. The moment I saw shadow instead of saddened eyes I knew something was amiss. Genius!
EDIT: My brain when I was continuing this video: If Chrono starts singing his signature song while standing to Lavos...
Video: I'm about to end this man's whole career while making him cry
Magus: you took...everything from Me
Lavos: I don't even know who you are
Magus: you will...
So prior to this I was predicting that Crono would be singing "screaming that I'm still alive" and then he'd get cut off and die mid-sentence, but this is probably better. Heartbreaking either way, and Upgraded Moon slays the vocals regardless.
CRONO: "I WILL SURVIIIVE!"
LAVOS: "lol no"
I've been wanting to comment on this particular part (Schala's part in particular) since the Story so far. I noticed an interesting trend with Lavos. When we first see Lavos, in the distant future, it has awakened, fully aware at what it is, and what it will do, the song reflects this. When we see it next, in 600 A.D., it is not ready, and the song also reflect this. When We next see Lavos in Pre-histroy, it has just landed, the song is just a tune, no lyrics or words, because it has just been born. When we see it here, in antiquity, it has just begun to realize it's purpose; Schala sings and gives Lavos the words to it's own song.
To put it short, if you listen to Lavos's themes throughout the musical, Sequentially, it shows how Lavos is developing both itself and it's theme as it grows. I just think that's genius even if it wasn't intended.
This kind of makes me wonder if this Lavos became evil because it imitated human malice/greed - the desire for its power.
at the end it sounded like lavos was singing along with chrono
@@SariaSchala I would like to think that; but it seems that it's inherent cycle of life depends on destroying other worlds; there's no other way for it to exist. Not to mention that a lot of the people we see in the game are actually good hearted induviduals, so it's not as if the world was consumed by it.
@@SariaSchala thinking like that leads to misanthropy, quit while you're ahead.
@@TranslatedAssumption I don't think that way at all. I was just trying to do some character analysis.
I remember watching the story so far package and just knew it would end here.
Such a cliffhanger, and such a *powerful* moment.
Chrono fights until his death, literally.
Spoiler:
But they refused.
@@laurapatricialimamartinez862 technically. I'm sure the musical will do it, but it is absolutely optional in the actual game
@@Flipface4*spoilers for anyone who hasn't managed to play this masterpiece of a game!*
I imagine they'll go for one of the very last endings you can get, which requires Crono coming back.
@@sunnywhite196 do you mean where they get the Ultimate Weapons?
@@ralzornthegreat6753 Yup, doing all the sidequest bits at the end to get one of the last couple of endings.
Schala's solo - both singing and the art - is probably my favourite part of the musical so far 💖
This musical has inspired me to make let's play (horribly edited on my channel) on the game myself. Even though I've been spoiled to some extent. Listening to this fresh was such a surprise, and totally worth it.
@@sunglassesrad6266 we know.
@@sunglassesrad6266 But you have to admit, that transition from "dream" Schala to Lavos was just *chefs kiss to the fingertips* Perfection!
@@sunglassesrad6266 kinda sounds like a gaster blaster
omg😳
Someone mentioned it in the premire this song showed up in, but the transition from Schala to Lavos is absolutely beautiful.
The artwork here is also amazing to boot! Can't wait for the new songs this musical will bring.
Now
with the power of fate
so long denied
no time on our side
days burn away
the future remains
and refuses
CHANGE
I can't help but feel that Schala shifting into Lavos accompanied by the most terrifying sound known to gaming was pretty clever. It's also foreshadowing something, but it's spoilers if I say anything about it. Anyway... kudos to Moon for killing the vocals (heh).
I'm in 93 degree weather and I still got chills at "And refuses... ChaAAanGE!!"
This made crono's death sadder
Schala's voice is beautiful
Jeez chronos singing in this slaps also all the art of lavos is so good... I love how this one has so many motifs
I loved your singing in this!
Possibly my favorite moment in the game and the musical so far! Seriously gives me chills. I love how Chrono reprised his theme while fighting Lavos by himself. Makes his death even sadder.
Yes! This means the new songs are gonna start coming out! So excited!
Good job you guys, the singing and acting was good. And the voice of Crono is the man!
True strength is not defined by winning easy battles.
Strength means standing up against impossible odds, fighting with all your might.
To know your chances of living is nonexistent and to fight anyways,
because it is what must be done.
Magus disagrees with that. "You got whacked because you're weak" is how he responds when speaking to Chrono in the end of time.
@@FFgamesftw A diamond in the rough of the original translation
@@FFgamesftw And yet, Magus couldn't stop Lavos either; infact I'm pretty sure he died to him in the original timeline where he summoned lavos at his palace.
So I suppose he was wrong.
@@FluffyDragonDrawing Well I mean you technically CAN win that fight in the game but only if your characters are strong and you have a good strategy. You get the special "hard mode" ending if you win at the ocean palace. Doing so makes it so Crono never dies so you could say Magus is right that you only die because you are weak.
@@FFgamesftw True, but I was referring to the case that happened before Crono's adventure. the one that happened historically; where it seems Magus summoned Lavos, and died against him.
He only survived because he was interrupted. But yes, you are correct there.
Chrono's Sacrifice always makes me teary especailly this rendition makes me think how brave he was.
Watching all these just makes me miss this game no matter how many times I've played it.
The arts were a lot of fun and Naps did amazingly with the colors like, I'm in looove
The beginning with Schala transitioning into Lavos hits different knowing what happens in Chrono Cross
Zeal: "Reject Humanity, Embrace Porcupine."
In a nutshell
"he's the main character he can't die"
Wait
Lavos: HOld mY nIghTMaRe InDUciNg ScREAm
(Spoilers)
*Shulk and Rex from Xenoblade will remember that*
Seeing Schala and Chrono give one last push to stop Lavos and save everyone was such a powerful moment when I saw it in game, and seeing them both sing out their powerful themes just doubles that effect.
Too bad they both die
@@martinat3884 Well that's the point they're sacrificing themselves.
@@TheAdvertisement Yep.
damn I remember in the story so far premier when Crono's death scene was coming up everyone who didn't play the game or just didn't know the story were cheering Crono on while us who knew were thinking "oh you poor souls are going to be devastated", that scene hits hard the first time around NGL
I just noticed that Schala and Lavos are both voiced by UprisingAttorney, the same person. Genius!
UprisingAttorney = Dream Devourer CONFIRMED!
@@TranslatedAssumption I really hope they do a dream devourer cover!
None is commenting how sad it feels listening to Magus's dispair? He dealt with all that shit alone, no help, no company. He is just powerless, there, watching
And he never gets reunited with Schala
I feel it. All these years, he is one of my favorite characters. Ironically, I wish Cyrus and Magus fought Lavos together.
3:43 So hey Chrono you know how Man on the Internet likes to make their villains act like they're about to win right before they lose and the sound ends?
A wonderful enactment of such a pivotal scene! Can’t wait for the full musical! In the meantime, just as they did with Undertale, these song reveals make each Sunday better.
Another fantastic song! Thank you so much!
Every vídeo of this musical is a masterpiece! Keep up this splendid work!
This was beautiful, thank you for all you've done for the fans realizing this masterwork!
Top tier voice overs from all involved. What an inspiring project this has been so far!
i wonder if a tvtropes page will be made for this musical too...
aanyway, Crono's death hits harder here than i though; i not sure why, but i feel like Marle's Heart will break when she awakens
There is one already, actually. I looked it up just last night.
What a perfect way to kill Chrono. I love how him being an idiot connects to his death...
But in all honesty, this is my favorite scene in Chrono Trigger. Chrono using his last energy in a ditch effort to help everyone survive. So tragic
Schala used her last ditch effort to help everyone else survive, not Chrono.
I was thinking of how when Schala was singing "the future remains, and refuses (change)," she's probably affirming her belief that there will still be a bright tomorrow, no matter how awful things are at the moment. And then Lavos hijacks that line and it's the exact opposite meaning.
It Hurt's to watch the end man...emotions at an all time high. cannot wait for the next video.
What a sad an amazing song. You guys knocked it out of the park! Good job to the voice of chrono. He really killed it
The Schala reprise here gets me in the heart.
I just too a look for the chrono trigger playlist and I can see you have been working on this for some time now!
Finally I've waited for this
"From the earth, they draw strength.
Our earth, our strength."
There are times and fates we can't defy.
"Everyone thinks they'll be the one to defeat me, but no one's escaped me yet."
This was one of the most amazing thing that Chrono Trigger did, and this captures it perfectly
This is an incredible project!
I can't wait for you guys to do lavos core theme this musical is really making me want to play chrono trigger again
I remember reaching this part in the game. I couldn't believe that it happened. I considered it a cardinal rule that the hero can't die.and Chrono trigger broke it
Chrono: "Magus no!"
Magus: "Magus YES!"
Lavos: *unharmed* "Magus, no."
Aaaand now we've caught up. Can't wait to see the rest of what you come up with.
Love this musical. I'm glad you started back up. Was worried it got cancelled
*My man got vaporized.*
Arrepios na espinha, such a wonderful work of art, inspiring and amazing, how great is the quality of this?
WHY ARE THE THİNG THAT COME OUT OF YOUR HANDS SO PERFECT?!?!
The moment we knew was coming, and it was very powerfully done!
Ooh I have been waiting for this bit. It was well worth the wait!
Now what path will the story take from here I wonder...
Can't wait for World Revolution~
It'll probably be number 59 or 60.
Me too!
The time has come
AND SO HAVE I
Schala may be one of the most tragic characters in the history of video games.
Yeah, and the fact nothing you do across two huge games can save her just makes it so much worse.
@@ElvenRaptor Especially the fact that it is ALL. YOUR. FAULT. Had you not been there, not only would Lavos have NOT been seriously ticked off, Schala could have saved herself with the pendant's magic. Way to go, "Hero"!
@@corjonbett Following your line of logic, what exactly happened to Schala in the original timeline when Janus was sent to the Middle Ages?
@@TranslatedAssumption She probably brought herself and her mother out of the palace and kept on living enough to pass the pendant down to her descendants
Great video
A perfect birthday gift
The lightning that flows through my veins tells me to be brave!
Im just gonna sit here hoping they do the extra stuff in the pc ds version of chrono trigger where
Spoilers
the final boss is of a shala slowly losing herself in an alternate timeline
This game has been out for a LONG time, you're not spoiling anything for anyone.
F for Crono
Now finally he can not leave us on a cliffhanger
Even though I know what happens
I think that's the worst part. We knew what was gonna happen next but the cliffhanger just killed us.
In hindsight, maybe singing at Lavos for a full minute was not the best use of Crono's determination
Lavos: "Ooh! Dinner and a show!"
Now...
Chrono will never be home in time for dinner
YYYEEESSSSSSSS
The first Lovecraft boss. ( The dream Eater )
*L A V O S*
Yes!!~
Names of the history and Destiny
LAVOS!!
Yoooooo, Chrono Trigger: The Musical has reawoken!
(Me who's a hungry dumbass like Lavos)
"Come, Prophet of Pies! FEEL TEH POWAH OF LAVOS!"
Kindly make a video on the reviving of crono
Why some people draw Magus with a red cape, I’ll never know. You can literally se that it’s dark blue in the game!
Probably because Toriyama's official artwork has him wearing a red cape.
Magus is starting to sound a bit like Goku Black.
And Schala at the beginning is looking like a SNACK!
So I just realized there is technically a canonical explanation for why when magus joins your party he's far weaker than he was as a boss.... Lavos drained his powers, in this scene, as such he doesn't have as much.
(Yes I know this doesn't hold up if you chose to fight him instead of having him join you, but let me have my narrative)
Side note, I'm not the most familair with Chrono trigger, i've only played through it once, and im on my second play though now.
Did Lavos introduce magic to the world? Like I always got the feeling that they brought it down with them. Ayla is the only one in the party who can't learn magic, because she was born *before* magic was a thing, and we see Lavos come to earth in her timeperiod.
I can't remember if the repitites have magic themselves, but they seemed to worship lavos anyways, so it's possible they got it as an extension from them.
Also there's the fact that her summoning lavos drained all of the humans of that ability.
Like I don't think lavos is directly giving people magic, just as a side effect of being there; it allowed magic to be manipulated.
YES YES YES OHHHHH YES
F's in the chat for Chrono.
This was very well done! But I will say that I never really liked Crono's expressions in this anime cutscene, he should be looking brave in the face of death, not caring what happens to him so long as everyone else is okay, determined not to fall... not look utterly confused at what's happening as he disintegrates. Y'know, like how this reprise suggests, death cry aside.
The light you see come from Crono's chest is Schala/Marle's pendant, which given the nature of Dreamstone, traps Crono's soul. This happens to be when Schala resigns herself to fate and Lavos, which turns into the Dream Devourer. Also, I would've died laughing if Lavos destroyed Crono right as he said he was screaming that he'd survive. Just cut him off mid-sentence.
They had the direction they had to go, and I support it. But yes, I very much thought the exact same thing. XD
This song was great, but I sort of prefer the SNES animation of Crono being disintegrated...
While this piece is really awesome. Is it only me who thinks that it doesn't make sense that Crono brings them closer to Lavos?
A year late, but that's a result of editing. In-game, all the downed characters slowly get sucked in towards Lavos until Crono interacts with Lavos' face and commits suicide. It's meant to add to the urgency of the situation. I would guess the in-game footage waited as long as possible to interact with Lavos just in case MOTI needed more dialogue footage. So as a result, the edit makes it look like Crono pushed them.
Woo hoo yeah bravo bravo man in the internet great job well done hope you are staying warm and eating healthy excellent job woo yeah. 😸🎉😸
Like I said in earlier comment on another song, this must be made a live musical. Square-Enix ought to pick this up and roll with it.
Its still so groundbreaking to kill off the protagonists right in the middle of the story.
You don't pronounce school "shool", so why pronounce it "Shala" instead of "Skala"?
German pronounces "Sc" with "Sh" sound, which was probably the inspiration here. (e.g. Schadenfraude) The same was done with Janus as (Yanus) which is how it would be pronounced in German, just some artistic liberty (I mean the official translation turned a knight sword called "Grandleon" into the "Masamune", famous Japanese Katana-Makers, (Which is even doubly ironic because we know who made the "Masamune" in-game, its Melchior).
I remember this moment...it is one of my most favorite moments in video game history. The hero, who fights until the bitter end, no matter the cost.
