Thanks for this, we're looking into picking up a few pet/hobby fibre alpacas soon and I was curious what other people use for fencing. What we currently have, best case, is 6 strand strained wire with about waist high ring lock attached, it's a woven wire product. We do still have once 6 strand fence with half the strands barbed wire, coming out soon. Not as high as I'd like at 5 feet. Pretty standard for here though. Have you considered adding a few wire strands to your woven/welded fences for extra strength at top and bottom? Adds a little to the cost but stops any bending. I've been watching my way through your Alpaca video, they're great!
Good fencing overview. Looking at the crimps in the wires, especially the top wire, on the woven fencing, it looks like it could have been pulled tighter. Generally speaking half the crimp will be pulled out as the fence is stretched between H braced wood posts at either end of the "stretch", usually a corner or gate. This makes for a very sturdy fence.
Thanks! That fence was originally pulled tight when installed but a storm messed it up in some places. And (male) alpacas/llamas getting on their hind legs and putting their weight on it in an attempt to get over will do that too. That fence has experienced both.
I am.anout to.instsll fencing for my llamas that will be here in a month. I already have my 5 ft horse wire but I am still struggling with my posts. Will I use t posts or wood posts. What is your opinion. Thanks tom
Wooden posts with tposts in between. Something like wooden posts every 30 feet with 2 tposts 10 feet apart in between. It can vary. And use wooden posts at corners
I’m retiring next year and would like to get into fiber animals. It’s more of a hobby than income. Still trying to decide between goats and alpacas. What are the pros & cons for alpacas?
Electric fencing will work on the outside to discourage predators. Due to their fiber, alpacas can’t feel the electric current, unless they touch it with their nose or something, so it’s generally ineffective for keeping them in.
Such helpful information! Trying to decide if Alpaca are for us. So much to learn.
Thank you so much! This was really helpful showing different options :)
This was great info to have as I’m looking at properties now and have been curious about fencing! Thanks for all you do!
Wonderful. I’m glad I could help. 😊

just wondering in the case of a predator sneaking through what do you use to get rid of them .308, or 12g

In regards to predators, do you bury your fence or just start it at ground level? Thanks for sharing.
I start at ground level but it may be different for you based on the types of predators in your area.
A comment on the hog or cattle panels. They can be easily change to another area. I have woven wire and it works great but you aren't going to move it
Where in Nebraska?
How about electric fencing

Butterfield Alpacas & Fiber Arts Thank you so much, i am starting out in aplacas and llamas and I love your videos, they are so helpful.
You’re welcome 😊
The wind noise really makes difficult to hear, even wearing headphones. Have you considered doing a voice over verses audio recording outside?
