    If i was ever in great shape and had the skills to climb mountains, I think I'd rather do this one rather than Everest. Yes, it's easier but there's not so many people on it and there's less risk of dying, frostbite, etc. because of that. And that summit is amazing - look at all that room!!

    I really wish, when people make amateur films of monumental climbs, to provide subtitles because I cannot under a word of this; the voices are muffled, particularly when they are on the summit pointing out all the surrounding peaks.

    Great video, a pity it was spoiled by the music being mixed up WAY, WAY too loud - I could make out commentary referring to Everest, Lohtse, Annapurna - that would've been great to have seen them with certainty - but the music ruined the experience - what an absolute exercise in folly !! - please remix and re-upload, if you get a chance.

    Great video, thanks for sharing.
    At 21:14 there appears to be a summit point a few metres higher than the marked summit (with the prayer flags). Is this just an illusion in this video, or were you just below the true highest point? Thanks.

    • @samsignorelli
      @samsignorelli 5 лет назад +1

      From what I've read, the prayer flags don't mark the true summit.
      From Wiki -- "It has a broadly flat summit plateau with no cairn (the traditional prayer flags on Cho Oyu's summit plateau do not mark the "technical" summit), which can be a source of confusion, and debate, amongst climbers."
      One of the indicators of truly summiting Cho Oyu is being able to see Everest, which you can't from the prayer flags.

      @30803080308030803081 5 лет назад

      Yeah, I was thinking about that. Evidently, you must walk to that little hill to get to the highest point on the mountain, and it will take about 30 minutes to get there.

      @@30803080308030803081 Moving the prayer flags to the actual summit would seem a logical thing to do.

      @@iron___ Yes....but the Cho Oyu prayer flags don't mark the actual high point on the mountain, even though you CAN see Everest from them (which was one of the criteria).

    @Francesco Are you kidding? I'm sure you've never climbed an 8,000er...otherwise you wouldn't be running your moth. Oxygen allows you to be warmer, to move faster, and to think more clearly. It's just a good decision. Climbing these things is more than dangerous enough. Climbing an 8,000er with oxygen is still a tremendous achievement! Not to mention, climbing without it causes brain damage according to several studies.

      Dude I would say physical fitness is a part of it, but it is more mental. My training (for a 6500m) consisted of going to Scotland for 2 weeks, camping and hiking 12 hours a day. Basically, for me, a big part of it is getting used to feeling like shit. Having the toughness to carry on when you really don't want to. My 'marker' is 2 ascents of Snowdon for a few days running, with a 12kg bag, and up/down time of 3 hours. Gym - high rep squats and dead lifts, big compound movements. Do something like Everest BC first, to gauge how fit you are. It is a popular trek, but it is still pretty tough for a first timer.
      But i'm sure others would have differing ideas on this. But I hope my input helps. I'm just starting my training for trekking/climbing the Annapurna region :)

      +drew2pac Were you on Mera? For me, as I have been to 6000+, you are right on. Mental is 80% of the battle.

    • @Trowarr

      If you are going to climb a 8000 meter mountain for the first time, you better learn that name. Cho Oyo is the least dangerous - still deadly - of the 8000 meter peaks. ;)
      I guess the "easiest" 7000+ meter peak is Muztagh Ata, basically a long gentle sloop that is 7509 meter high.

    • @petehuskins

      I climbed it in 2003. 3 people died in 2 days from altitude related problems. Even the "easy one" can bite!

      I watched 4 videos hoping to find some one tp pronounce the name Cho Oyu. At 25: 10 the climber pronounced Cho Oyu. It sounded to me like Choi You. Or Choi'u. Easy really. You could start saying 'Joy You'. Lol. Sounds similar and the Yaks likely wouldn't know the difference.

    mountaineering documentaries without narration are rather pointless,take the video diary and add insightful narration at your leisure after the fact,greatly increases value of climb and video for many reasons.
