I guess this works if your hiding the walls to sell but this isn’t how you properly fix that problem the wall is still crumbling as you put the nails in

@@BillBracket when you just cement over crumbly cement the same things going to happen down the road. You need to chip away the loose cement make the Surface as clean as possible. Cuz it's not fixing the problem it's hiding the problem and when you hide the problem it just comes back out later down the road. I've been following contractors around from job to job fixing their mistakes. I feel like someone's going to have to come in later on and fix that problem as well. Overall it looks good yes and yes it's not brain surgery but you didn't address any of the actual problems you just covered them up.
I wouldn't call this a how to video I would call this video covering up a problem instead of fixing it. Because people will watch this and take what you do as a lesson and we'll have a bunch of people doing what you just did creating more problems everywhere. If you're going to make videos on how to fix something you should make them properly so when people use your video as a guide they're not going to screw themselves over in the end.

Would it be easier to scrape off any access before putting up the wire mesh?

There is a reason the wall is crumbling. Water is infiltrating the wall leaching out the lime and weakening the wall. This is not a repair. This is a band aid, hiding the real problem. I have had to go in and properly repair the repair and the damage that was hidden / created by this kind of repair.,many times. The longer you leave it like this the worse the damage will be and the weaker the foundation will be.Hire a competent foundation contractor.

@@magacop5180 a crystalline waterproofing is a better solution. It actually penetrates the masonry and fills the pores. Which both solidifies and makes the actual masonry itself waterproof. But you have to follow the instructions exactly. Mix it exactly as directed then install the slurry with a stiff bristle brush working it into the wall. Then you must keep it dampened to allow the crystalline chemicals to migrate deep into the wall. XYPEX Is one brand name. They make a lot of waterproofing for masonry so make sure you get the correct on that is applied to masonry and not the add mixture that is mixed into new concrete. It has to be installed over bare masonry though so any previous coating has to be removed.
If you are looking for a cosmetic solution, Xypex can actually be removed from the surface after it has penetrated the wall sufficiently ( I wait about a month just to be sure) because the cementitious material is just a vehicle for the crystalline waterproofing. Then patch the wall any way you choose. Or the Xypex can be used to smooth it to some extent. Without seeing how severe your “crumbling” is I can not say for sure if this is appropriate. If it is really severe it could be an immediate structural problem. But if it more “surface” deterioration it probably is not too late fo4 this method.

If you can ‘pound’ a nail into the wall, a less drastic and costly approach may be possible, right?

The wire mesh that goes up, someone told me there's a front side and back side. Which way goes facing forward?
Also can you put up tile with this? I'm repairing my basement wall and would like to stick tile to the morter if possible

You don’t need wiremesh, it’s a waste of time. The right bonding agent and the right mix of cement (not the stuff he’s using) just fine. This guy doesn’t know what he’s doing do not follow his video. To see the right stuff look at Kirk Giordano plastering videos on RUclips the guys a master!!
