I recently learned that my grandfather was a Ritchie Boy, having been stationed in the Army’s 3rd Mobile Radio Broadcast Company. He knew the German language from serving a church mission to Germany from 1935-1938. Unfortunately, he never talked about the war and passed away 20+ years ago so my family knows very little of his service. Stories like this one, learning more about the collection of soldiers he belonged to, brings gratitude to my heart of the service of others to defend and protect what they loved most.

Intel work like this in the U.S. Army goes back at least as far as Gettysburg. Overnight between the 1st and 2nd day General Meade had captured Confederates questioned and this let him know which CSA units were present and where they were located on the battlefield and what units had yet to arrive with some idea of how long it would take them to arrive. Since Lee's commanders didn't tell him the truth about how badly mauled their troops were at the end of day 2, Lee though he had a full division's worth of well-rested troops available for the charge on day 3. In reality the troops Lee had had either been in heavy fighting or were exhausted by a forced march just to reach Gettysburg. Meade knew more about Lee's army than Lee himself knew, and this made Meade stay put and await Lee's attack on his center.

It seems like for a while this country was more cohesive and without as much hate and intentional divisiveness. A much better and truly, heartfelt patriotism was in everyone. To do their part, no matter what that part was, was considered unquestionable duty and eagerly accepted. The people who like to call themselves patriots today, and scream and shout about "free-dumb", fight back against public health measures, and care nothing for their fellow human being, need to pay attention. They need to pay attention to what these real patriots were willing to risk, just to be Americans. And then look at what they did above and beyond for the greater good, and learn some selflessness. Because selfishness doesn't get you very far or very many friends and absolutely zero loyalty.
