@peterahjorter There are two engines! The front controls hydraulics as well so sometimes you want full hydraulic power but less pushing power hence the need to control them independantly. Also in corners the back will push the front around if left at full throttle.
Love the Es haven't driven the Gs I think they're C18s powering them as opposed to the 3412/3408 configuration in the Es nice machine though thanks for the look
i like the presentation. You have some fun and enjoy the job. Dirty machines are paying the bills. i like mud and dirt otherwise I would work in an office not run iron.
It's just a counter. If you're paid by the load or the cubic yard (or cubic meter) instead of the hour, it's important to keep track of how many loads you've hauled.
The horn is the most important bit on that scraper as I'm guessing thats what you use to summon the Dozer to give you a push! Oh and Luke Skywalker cant ever drive that scraper - the sign on the window clearly said "Dont force this joystick" LOL
@25mfd The answers depend on the type of soil you're working in, size of the scrapers, and the operators of both types of machines. In a scraper the size of a 657, they're designed for moving a LOT of dirt and a grenerally used for rough cutting. They'll usually cut out the dirt to within 5 tenths (6 inches or half a foot) before other machines take over.
@UAL012 I recently watched a vid of the gomaco 9500 trimmer. I thought that was what the motor grader was for? Is the subgrade rolled after the trimmer is finished or is it ready for the next phase. (ie curbs and concrete/asphalt paving)
@robdog121523 Oh and before I laid them all off I paid them a couple extra hours to go through every machine and give them a wipe and clean out behind the seats.
What is the purpose of dual engine control? Why would you apply throttle to one engine but not the other, or vice-versa, or both at the same time? Thanks! Always wondered this about scrapers.
It can be called a can or a bowl, people always call different parts of different machines different things. Its even as bad as calling a whole machine by a different name like people referring to a skid steer only as a bobcat or in the uk a backhoe can commonly be called a jcb because theyre popular manufacturer names. Or like calling the arm on an excavator an arm or a croup. Doesnt mean that somebody who uses a different word isnt an operator in my opinion its the exact opposite.
@UAL012 Another question...Scrapers are used in the rough grade phase but how close are you looking to get to grade when using scrapers? What are the typical tolerances that you would want to get to? Also, how much can one expect of the grader operator to fix a botched rough grading phase? ie, an over filled or underfilled area.
Maybe just to see how they have changed over the years,i have been frozen in winter and boiling in summer..no heaters or air con ( or decent cabs) for many many years,i retired a few years ago after 46 years of 12 hour shifts..enough is enough..my last machine a new D9R did have air con tho',brilliant...i also drove my name CATDW21 many years ago too..no auto gearbox or hydraulics then...clutch/ winch and a big gearstick + a donkey engine to start..the good old days,,no thanks..lol
please if you are going to talk about a pice of equipment that i love you get all the facts right . that what pay the bills and feed your faimly be serious and take pride in what you do. what we do as operators is a dream for some and a reality for some to make history that future generations to admire
@cummins35001 Who wants to be serious all the time. We've already gone over what climate control switches are, and I would hope if you're running a 657 you are smart enough to figure it out anyway.
How about you take a little pride in your iron, and clean it!! Also, cracked glass on at least 3 windows, 1 of your hood latches is up, missing the ashtray.......really bro, if your gonna give a tour, make sure your machine is presentable.
@specialks1953 It's easier to not think about what the controls do, just what you want the machine to do. I had someone ask me which joystick in the excavator did what and it took me a good 2 minutes to figure it out and tell them.
@robdog121523 These guys are double shifting eleven and a half hours a day and have been working in brutal conditions for the last month straight. Normally most stuff is kept nice and clean on my site but when it's painful to even just drag yourself to work every day because you are so worn out (big push before the end of the year shut down) things get a little run down.
Is that right? Maybe you should take a peek in the manual and see what Caterpillar (the manufacturer of the machine) calls it. Last time I checked they called it a BOWL.
@akechely Ok bro, I'll make sure every single one of our 220 some machines is in perfect factory condition. Or maybe since this on is being worked on by a mechanic and not being used for production when I took the video I will make it of this machine?
@Amed2012 As I stated earlier in the video you can toggle the gauges between the front and back engine. The gauges were on rear engine display while I shot the video, and it was not running.
Loved your video man!!! Find it funny how this offended the 'militant asperger internet heavy equipment expert crowd'Bwhaa ha ha ha ha!!!:) made me kind of miss it................except for neck and back ache at the end of the day from years of gettin bounced around in this shit.
Along time since i drove a 57,no heaters to keep you warm then, the fan blades were adjustable (rotated) and you could turn them around thro' the hole in the radiator guard so the fan sucked air in and blew warm air into the cab rather than blowing it out thro' the rad, also had to start front engine with a donkey engine...wonder if anyone here could /know how to do that....catdw21
@UAL012 That's pretty much what i thought. Answer this...If you have an area where you need to make a substantial cut of say 5 feet or more, after a few passes, how do you check to make sure you haven't overcut the area? Grade stakes give you the initial depth to cut to but can they be used as a guide to determine how close you are getting to grade?
The scraper is a tricky bugger to operate, I had a trial run in a terex and I didnt get enough time to get used to the controls, kinda tricky trying to drive and watch whats going on at the back at the same time!
@vantagetes After you make a pass, how do you get back to the EXACT cutting depth of the previous cut? Do these machines have some way of locking in a cutting depth so you make the same cut at the same cutting depth EVERYTIME? If they don't have this, i would imagine it would take a good eye to set the bowl at the same cutting depth every time. And be correct.
@25mfd These scrapers aren't capable of automatically setting up to make cuts at the same depth. It takes a while to develop a good eye for making cuts and fills. About 90% of scraper operation is by feel. I've got a LOT of hours and years in one and it's a matter of getting used to the machine and how it runs.
when you turn the scraper on a 90 degree angle you only want the front motor engaged, as the back motor will push you forwards instead of pivoting on the rear wheel
hahah lol i got so confused i was watching another one of your videos in another tab so i started hearing a cat 657E scraper cold start when you played with your ac knobs i was so confused
A Lighthearted look at the beast! Don't be so upset people. I liked his presentation! a few errors who cares! I like the single stick! The 3 levers and the Bail arm lever were what I had to use for decades! Do they still have the button for setting the RPMs the same as others pushing/pulling you?I suppose they would have to as transmission problems could result. My favourite was the 639D Twin engine elevator was the best! But still preferred sitting on a digger loading trucks!
1970 in Scunthorpe with Merrimans using the older version of the 657,s we moved 18million cubic meters in 14 months thats mucking some achievement for 53 years ago.
It’s easier to feel what your scraper is doing with hydraulic but if you don’t mind less feel and wanna kick back with out flailing arms everywhere Gs are nice
button on the floor is diff lock. not trans lock. trans lock is the button next to your cushion hitch
@peterahjorter There are two engines! The front controls hydraulics as well so sometimes you want full hydraulic power but less pushing power hence the need to control them independantly. Also in corners the back will push the front around if left at full throttle.
4:22 that I'll never get back
Good thing you didn't force the joy stick, the ejector seat would have engaged
Love the Es haven't driven the Gs I think they're C18s powering them as opposed to the 3412/3408 configuration in the Es nice machine though thanks for the look
i like the presentation. You have some fun and enjoy the job. Dirty machines are paying the bills. i like mud and dirt otherwise I would work in an office not run iron.
Haha! I loved this video! So far has been the most entertaining!
i thought that the two buttons on the joystick were for shooting missles and machineguns and stuff
@25mfd Hyrdaulic restriction reduced flow and increases resistance in transmission.
You miss the hot weather? Happy new years.
It's just a counter. If you're paid by the load or the cubic yard (or cubic meter) instead of the hour, it's important to keep track of how many loads you've hauled.

LOL
Oh for fuck sake people have a sense of humor😂
Your like a 12 year old with there dream coming true to drive a cat scraper.
But good video thank you from: beaver lumber
Lol nice vid! amigo! anyone that knows!! how she works! knows!! it was a funny! thumbs up here!!

things have changed a lot
What is the purpose of dual engine control? Why would you apply throttle to one engine but not the other, or vice-versa, or both at the same time? Thanks! Always wondered this about scrapers.
Because if you crank your cab your rear engine will push your cab sideways if you don’t let off it
Wow, I posted this 11 years ago!

If ur half decent you can get within a tenth

Thanks for sharing, I learned something.
that sink is the wipers
it would be good if the Gs also had joy stick steering
How do you figure?
i love heavy equipment machines ,,
please if you are going to talk about a pice of equipment that i love you get all the facts right . that what pay the bills and feed your faimly be serious and take pride in what you do. what we do as operators is a dream for some and a reality for some to make history that future generations to admire
honestly i have seen proof that this guy knows his stuff and it is called a bowl on a scraper tractor like that one.
Naw, it’s the can…
@dozerman8114 Does your mom tie your shoes in the morning?
Money wheel ftw!
"Don't force this Joystick". I should have that on my _______Fill in the blank.
love runnin these for the brief time i was aloud......stupid f's.jk my wasnt to badd
Who?
@cummins35001 Who wants to be serious all the time. We've already gone over what climate control switches are, and I would hope if you're running a 657 you are smart enough to figure it out anyway.
This is funny as fuck XD Also, how do i get a job to work in things like this?
💪💪🥰🥰🥰
damn it amazes me how many trolls there are on youtube
hahahahaha sink control. hahhahaaa Never heard that one before.
beep beep....he he he
How about you take a little pride in your iron, and clean it!! Also, cracked glass on at least 3 windows, 1 of your hood latches is up, missing the ashtray.......really bro, if your gonna give a tour, make sure your machine is presentable.

@ToonandBBfan Is 657 not 651....push cat is for fools.
So, is the exterior of this unite, yellow? And does it run on propane or ave gas? Also, does it blow black smoke?
K thanks bye
Hahaha
Howcome its two gaspedals? Wouldnt it be better with just one? Or does that setup benefit the use of the machine?

خیلی عالیه من کیشون رو دارم البته مدل پایینه

C18s well balanced 57 prefer the Es for some reason
@Amed2012 As I stated earlier in the video you can toggle the gauges between the front and back engine. The gauges were on rear engine display while I shot the video, and it was not running.
Sadly I know the pup motors all too well. Admit it though...you'd like to go back and revisit those old days from time to time wouldn't you?
radboy28, construction and mining equipment generally operates on 24v systems. Military equipment does as well.
Loved your video man!!! Find it funny how this offended the 'militant asperger internet heavy equipment expert crowd'Bwhaa ha ha ha ha!!!:) made me kind of miss it................except for neck and back ache at the end of the day from years of gettin bounced around in this shit.

Were is the cushion hitch switch, the most important to engage after getting loaded.
2:50 it’s the right yellow thumb button on the joystick
when you turn the scraper on a 90 degree angle you only want the front motor engaged, as the back motor will push you forwards instead of pivoting on the rear wheel
@25mfd When you're working a fill, yes. Usually on a job this large you have someone checking the cuts and moving the grade stakes as needed.
as far as mass-x, a good hand can cut to grade within a cpl tenths. i have finished pads and retentions with a 57.
I lolled at: The sink controller, the heater being on maximum (air con is on maximum here in Aus), and the yellow button for the bowl operation :D
hahah lol i got so confused i was watching another one of your videos in another tab so i started hearing a cat 657E scraper cold start when you played with your ac knobs i was so confused
I used to drive these in the 70`s, before electronics got involved. we called the bowl the box. Thats in the UK, of course.
An engine brake works by reducing the strokes of the pistons but how does a transmission brake work?
its called operating condition, you should now whats the like if u ever seen your mom
@redheadedduckhunter Much easier.
@UAL012 Hope i didn't kill you with all those questions. Thanks for the help.
i dont think ive ever heard it called a can? lol thats a new one to me
He likes to joke! lighten up. Thats what make his videos interesting!
he is the new trainer for the u.k job centre plus training for work program
he also showed the money wheel. what does he have to complain?
Newby = Brand new CAT cap, not a speck of dirt. WHAT!!!
A Lighthearted look at the beast! Don't be so upset people. I liked his presentation! a few errors who cares! I like the single stick! My favourite was the 639D Twin engine elevator was the best! But still preferred sitting on a digger loading trucks!
More of a setting for locking your transmission in a low gear its mostly 2nd but some scrappers i have run do it in 1st.
AWESOME man awesome lol very informative
Haha. 2:27 I build those joysticks at my job.
Looks nice. The scrapers I run are all f series or older.
Not one video how to jumpstart 627G rear engine
loll i think you should watch the other videos !
where you mammer ed when you made the video
1970 in Scunthorpe with Merrimans using the older version of the 657,s we moved 18million cubic meters in 14 months thats mucking some achievement for 53 years ago.
Where I am working now we move that amount of dirt every 20 days, but it’s with trucks not scrapers.
Keep your Bozo trucks 57s will never be admonished
PMSL in UK this made my friggin day
I like the old three lever setup!
why is there a 24v power outlet
first view and comment
this is the job for me
are the joystick controls easier or harder than the regular lever operation?
It’s easier to feel what your scraper is doing with hydraulic but if you don’t mind less feel and wanna kick back with out flailing arms everywhere Gs are nice
more box videos
1:20😂
What is the money wheel for?
YOU HIT THE COUNTER EVERY LOAD YOU HAUL AT THE END OF THE DAY THEY ADD UP ALL THE LOADS TO FIGURE OUT HOW MANY YARDS OF MATERIAL WERE MOVED
2010 video, now 2017. Probably back at McD's flippin' burgers.
It's my favorite scraper as a mechanic because of guaranteed overtime😂😂😂
