  • In a jaw-dropping pivot, President Donald Trump announced he’s lifting all U.S. sanctions on Syria-at the request of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman-just ahead of a high-stakes meeting with Syria’s Islamist leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. Yes, that Sharaa-the former al Qaeda commander turned president after toppling Bashar al-Assad."It's their time to shine," Trump declared in Riyadh. “Good luck Syria, show us something very special.” The move, cheered by Ankara and Riyadh, opens Syria’s doors to foreign investment, aid, and legitimacy-despite deep Israeli unease and U.S. intelligence concerns. Syrian president Ahmed al-Sharaa called the lifting of sanctions on Syria, announced by U.S. president Donald Trump, "a historic and courageous decision" in a televised speech on May 14.
