Comprehensive and informative as always Scott. P Bass - 2007 built American Fender black with maple neck, scratch plate changed from white to black with flat wounds. Last P Bass with S-1 switch sold new in the UK. Go to bass and therefore probably desert island bass - Ibanez SR5000 Prestige with round wounds. Loving the SBL One Strap Black Edition - might even hold up my Overwater 5 string.

I have two dingwall basses. My first dingwall, the afterburner 2 is my old work horse. I've had it for over 10 years and it's never let me down. I love the way it feels. It's beautiful! And the sound is amazing and INCREDIBLY versatile with its active or passive tunability.
Now, I just received a custom built dingwall super PJ. It's a passive P Bass with a J pickup. Three tone sunburst. Wenge neck and fingerboard.
I'd have a pretty hard time deciding which bass to save in a fire. The new P bass is just so gorgeous! It has the original one strap which complements the natural burst so well! But often I find myself reaching for the afterburner 2 for gigs. The versatility is unmatched. In almost any situation I can make it sound "better" then the P Bass.
Feel free to hit me up for pics.
    Thanks Scott!

In order of preference for the P basses:
    A) Amazing ones:
1- Moolon (I would bet this is the bass that cuts the most through the mix, comparing all 4)
2- "P bass of doom" (that relic one)
    B) Good, but unimpressive:
3- Fender Nate Mendel (I feel a bit of a lack of middle frequencies in it)
4- Overwater (I just don't like active P basses too much, IMO the best part of the P bass usually gets cut off with active circuitry)
That said, I would take the Moolon to the "desert island" :-)

My desert Island bass would be my Jazz Bass, the one of my profile. I bought it in 1975, and customized it a lot. Fretless rosewood neck with varnish, bronze bridge, Kent Armstrong J pickups, a Fender P bass pickup between the 2 J pickups (with a switch to select the neck J bass or the P Bass pickup), bronze nut and a hipshot to drop the E string in D (or lower). To get it you'll have to take it from my cold dead hands! ;-)).
By the way, I love the enthusiasm that you show in all your vids.

I just put together a parts Fender P-bass. A maple mex neck with a brass nut, sunburst mex body, vintage p-bass split-coil pickups, Grover tuners and a stock bridge. My SBL One strap arrived yesterday. It is really good; difference was immediately apparent. I've tried a bunch of straps over the last couple months, most over 3 inches wide, but this one is the keeper. With some of the other straps I was getting neck pain and also fighting "neck dive" from my heavy 5-string bass; with SBL One I don't have any neck pain and I it's a lot easier to keep the bass in the playing position I need.

I love that overwater bass! The active circuit gives the P that extra growl.
For me I love love love (like in a borderline odd way) my Fender Deluxe active Precision Bass Special (just the name is a mouthful!); It’s got a PJ configuration with Fenders noiseless pickups and a stupid huge -18db boost and cut on the midrange... I just recently added a hipshot range extender on the e string tuned to a low D so it’s like having a 5 string bass in a 4 string setup.
It’s the Swiss Army knife of Basses! With any amp set eq flat I can get a range of tonal pallet that’s unbelievable!

  • @xpatsteve

P-Basses have always been my favorite so my desert island bass is the one I have now. It's a natural sunburst 1978 Precision with a rosewood fingerboard and black pick guard. Bought it used back in 1986 and it's completely original. I've had a few basses over the years (my first was a brand new '72 Fender Musicmaster): a fretless P-bass, Gibson Thunderbird, Guild B-302 (I do miss that one), Guild Pilot and a Fender Jazz, among others. Like you, Scott, I prefer a rather hefty neck that makes me work and that's one of the reasons I've kept this one for so long. That, and the overall heavy, solid construction that gives it such an indestructible feel and sound you can only get from a P-Bass.

The Japanese mid 90s ones are nice! (This is what I realistically have my eye on) They get a lot of finish checking by now (expect cracks in the paint work) but they are the best value to quality (still expensive though but woth it) still have a phat neck mace to the highest standards and don't demand the crazy prices tye usa ones do and imho just as good in that mid 90s era - 94 to 96 is gold for the MIJ's - under $800 is am ABSOLUTE bargain and these proves can be had if you really look around (play it and check it over 1st though - dont get ripped off).

Desert Island Bass is a Roscoe signature Century 5 string. I had shoulder/nerve issues approximately 40 years ago (my left arm would tingle and fall asleep so badly it would wake me up in the middle of the night. So I devised a solution using two straps. One good quality wide strap and a nylon Cheapie. Haven't had a problem for nearly 40 years and all of my basses sit perfectly balanced ( no hands) with the weight distributed to both shoulders. FYI: My gigging bass for over 15 of those 40 years was a very heavy 6 string made out of Padauk and still no problems.

  • @paddydaddyo
    @paddydaddyo 6 лет назад

Well, for a relatively late blooming P-Bass convert ... you've certainly gone all in. Seems like just yesterday that you picked up that '59 Heavy Relic (but I guess it was 4 years ago now, time flies). Myself, I've been a P-Bass Man since I started playing in '82. First bass was a Hondo II Precision rip-off, and within two years I had found a real '63 P of my own-which I never should've traded away! I've had over a dozen others in the intervening 30+ years, some real winners, and even a couple duds. These days I have three:
    • A '51 copy "Franken-Fender" parts bin bass that I built over the years. I wired in a Seymour Duncan 1/4 Pound single coil pu and strung it with black tape-flats. I've played hundreds of gigs with this old dog, and it's never disappointed.
    • A '60s Deluxe "Franken-Fender" ala Duck Dunn, Carl Radle, and Billy Cox: it's a '62 reissue body with a '66 spec, bound & blocked Jazz neck, SD 1/4 # pu, and a push/pull tone pot that offers two different levels of capacitance. Strung with DR Legend Flats. And,
    • A 1980 Precision Special, factory original active P that supposedly once was owned by a famous bass player. They only made that iteration of the Special for 3 years ('80, '81, & '82) before it was supplanted in the lineup by the Elite series. The early-'80s Specials look and sound like a standard Precision (the active circuit can be switched off for a true passive mode), but they can get some serious growl when the EQ is dimed. Because of that, it's strung with a round wound set.
As far as the "Desert Island" scenario ... I would take all three. Bwahahahaha! But, if I had to choose one? Wow. That would be a hell of a thing! I suppose for sheer playability and tone I would have to go with the Deluxe P/J. But ask me tomorrow, and the answer might be different!

Have had a 1962 P Bass since 1970. Other than refinishing the body and replacing a cracked pick guard, everything is original. My son, a better musician than his dad, still plays it. Classic P Bass tone and exceptional ergonomics. Less weight and better balance than the current crop of P Basses.
In recent years I decided I wanted something more contemporary including active electronics. Shopped Chicago, Seattle and Phoenix before I settled on a G&L M2000. A bit of Leo lives on in this bass. Again great ergonomics and great tone. More dynamic due to the active electonics.

Hey Scott, I love your stuff man. To your comments about avoiding injury, I'd add that a good warmup and stretching routine can help. I first saw that advice on a video from Stu Hamm. Dream desert island bass: Pre ernie ball Music Man Stingray, Maple neck and fretboard, Sunburst. Although I do currently play a lovely ash bodied Warwick Corvette, it growls...

I own, Warwick (German custom shop) A StingRay Classic, ‘72 P-Bass, and countless other nice basses, BUT if I was stranded on a Island I would definitely want a plane old Guild Pilot SB-602 the one with the Poplar body. I have owned 15 or so Pilots and I always go back to them.

Desert island basses for me are the three I actually own: Peavey T-40, G&L L-2000 and Yamaha BB-3000.
If money wasn't an object it would definitely be a Wal.

5 years ago I was eager to learn bass so bad so I just went to a store and grabbed the cheapest bass in the store, which was Squire p bass. It feels just so good for me. Well i can't say it sounds the best (I absolutely love the sound though), but it just fits to me so well and I haven't found a bass that fits better than this.

I rescued a Washburn G. W. Lyon p-bass from a flood. Its neck is still a bit warped, but I repaired the electronics. It sounds okay, though I feel it needs at least a pair of 15" speakers to have some fun. It needs neck work, but I can play it.
    It's my first bass.
Desert island bass... five strings, nice action, fun to play, and has an amplifier made of coconuts and can be heard on neighbouring islands.

Enjoy those mornings...they do not last long enough. When they get older...mine are a sophomore in university & high school...the craziness continues, but morphs to other topics, other times of the day, & often moves to technology...sms, calls, etc.........I miss those mornings.

I've got a Curbow International Exotic Petite V that feels fantastic to play, it's the one I'd grab if I could only grab one. Flattest, straightest neck you'll ever play. It's a Five string with the string spacing of a 4-string P-Bass and it's got a pretty mean P-Bass tone all on it's own when the neck pickup is on solo. Sadly it falls a little short on that snappy, woody tone that some of my other basses have but I'm able to pull off techniques with the Curbow that I just can't do with the other guys. Plus it's fairly rare to have an actual Curbow made by the late man himself. Close second would be this Carvin 5-string fretless I modded out with Bartolini J-style pickups and a Badass V bridge. Sounds nearly as expressive as Bakithi's fretless work on Graceland.

I really love my Epiphone/Tobias Deluxe 5 string. So, I think my desert island bass would have to be either a pre-Gibson era Tobias or an MTD bass. I'm more comfortable with the 5 string and not having a low B feels strange now that I'm used to it, but if I couldn't have a 5 string, I could make due with 4. I tend to use the low B sparingly since not many songs I play were written with 5 strings in mind. Usually leading up to the root from below or occasionally playing a riff an octave lower for a few bars.

My early 90's Fender MIM P...recently upgraded/refurbished with Seymour Duncan SPB-2 Hots & new electronics...still passive. The upgrade really brought the bass back to life after a pretty flat sounding period. Interestingly, the serial number identifies my P as a Jazz bass on the Fender site...no idea why.
