  • Some videos of the Siemens Inspiro trains which I made on the opening day of line 3 of Sofia Metro - 26th August 2020. There are videos from all of the stations on the line.
Line 3 is completely different from the other metro lines in Sofia. It has its own depot and it is completely separated from the other two lines. Of course, there are connections for the pedestrians on the transfer stations - National Palace of Culture and Orlov most to other lines. The metro trains which will be operating on M3 are Siemens Inspiro. On all of the stations there are partitions with automatic doors on the platforms. The movement of the trains is 90 % automatic, Of course there is a driver in the cab mostly for monitoring the work of the systems and the movement of the train. He can take manually control in a case of a problem. The Siemens Inspiro trains are very nice, much quieter and comfortable from the Metrovagonmash trains which are serving M1 and M2. Unfortunately, they were ordered with only three cars (sections) and I'm afraid that will lead to overcrowding of the trains during rush hour, but we will see this in the next months.

Same rolling stock as in Warsaw. Except that they use the third rail and longer trains

Why is only one pantograph raised at a time? Because it picks up exactly 1.5kV DC, the supply voltage of the line. If both pantographs were raised, it would be receiving 3kV DC, which is too much. It seems that there's a plan to increase from 3 to 4 cars in future.

One pantograph is enough for powering the three units. Yes, there are plans to increase the length of the trains from 3 to 4 cars, but that won't be done soon.

Interesting. The trains look futuristic. The platform doors...well, never liked these. At least they are not that big as in other cities like London or Paris.
What however seems strange to me that this new line is very likely not compatible with the other ones.
I mean, instead of 3rd rail the trains use overheard wires. Despite being Inspiro also used in Warsaw with 3rd rail.
Also, I presume other trains can´t run here because of the width? As the Inspiros are 2,65m wide, but the Metrovagonmash 2,7m.

Hi! Thank you for the comment, I saw it now, RUclips don't notify me for it... In my opinion the Inspiros are class above than Metrovagonmash. I don't know the width of the trains, but there's no way to put a Metrovagonmash train on M3 and oposite - Inspiro on M1 or M2, because there's no any connections by rails between the lines. So any problems with a different width of the trains do not matter.

@@IvoRadoev Yeah, the same problem here for me, too. I almost never get notified about comments here.
Ok, then they bought the Inspiros just because they were available. So it´s a subsystem and not a whole network. A bit odd, but then again in a lot of cities this is the case, that lines are not compatible to each other.
